CHEERS LIVE ON STAGE is a rousing new theater comedy set in Boston’s iconic basement bar where WE know everybody’s name: Diane and Sam. Carla, Coach, Cliff... Norm!
Utilizing the original award winning television scripts skillfully adapted from the first season of NBC’s long-running sitcom, the stage production gives modern audiences the chance to experience live for the first time since its original taping , that rare sophisticated TV comedy that seamlessly combines slapstick comedy, romance and drama.
Based on the first season of Cheers, this production finds baseball player-turned-bar owner Sam “Mayday” Malone hiring newly jilted aspiring poet Diane Chambers to work in his pub, alongside perpetually confused old bartender Coach and tough-talking waitress Carla, who cracks wise with know-it-all mail carrier Cliff and perennial barstool-warmer Norm.
Cheers was the last, and perhaps greatest, of the pre-ironic golden age of sitcoms, “appointment television” with bona fide jokes and punch lines, pre-dating Seinfeld, Friends and The Office. At the time it concluded in 1993, the series held a record 117 Emmy nominations and 28 wins, earning nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series for each of its 11 seasons. Theater, television and film veteran Erik Forrest Jackson – acclaimed for his Off-Broadway comic adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie as well as Doll, a twisted take on Ibsen's A Doll's House – has expertly adapted the series’ original 1982 scripts for the stage. Award-winning director Matt Lenz (Pageant: The Musical; First National Tour of A Christmas Story: The Musical) fine-tunes CHEERS LIVE ON STAGE for today’s TV audiences accustomed to niche programming and binge-watching.
The girl that played Diane was awesome, and Norm was really good. The show was awesome.
Such a fun production. It didn't take long before you forgot that these folks were not the original cast. Diane was as charming and annoying as in the original telecast. Sam, Coach, Cliff, Carla, and Norm were perfect. Highly recommended for a quality evening of fun for anyone that remembers the show. You couldn't help yourself from yelling out "NORM!" when he came in. Way too much fun!
This was an enjoyable play that kept me laughing the whole time. The actors adopted the mannerisms and physical resemblances of the characters they played very well. I wasn't sure if a play could duplicate the show, but it covered the first season perfectly.
Very disappointing. Walked out at intermission. Actors were talented, just no material to work with.
This play was fabulous. The set was perfect, and the actors were even better. If you liked the TV show, you need to see this play.
I attended with my wife, my dad and his lady friend. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be a bar patron during the production. The cast members were friendly and appreciative of our small roles. I was paired with Coach's (Barry Pearl) real life wife (Cindy) which only enhanced my experience. Really nice down to earth people. The production was outstanding. The actors were spot-on with their mannerisms and portrayal of the original characters. Highly recommend Cheers Live on Stage. If you get the chance to be a participant, I highly recommend you take advantage of the opportunity. A different perspective and truly enjoyable!
If you are a fan of the show you will enjoy this entertaining presentation
From the moment you walk into the theatre and see the Cheers bar on stage, happiness reigns! It was terrific to see the characters from the TV show live on stage, and the actors were cast to perfection. The audience was lively and fun. It was so much fun, a great night at the theatre!
Very entertaining, great presence.....as if we were on the set of the original show! Would have liked to have seen more of Cliff's witty orations but Coach was the icing on the cake! He was, as he was depicted on TV, a lovable innocent! Thanks for a great show! It's hard to find entertaining, fresh and truly good humor in today's climate.
First, let's begin with the set. It was the exact replica of the show. Second, the cast was great! I personally loved Carla but everyone did and excellent job. I would recommend this show to everyone. I took my mother and brother and they never watched the show but they loved this show. Great job!
Even is you weren't hooked on "Cheers," you can't help but be entertained by this performance -- especially if you have spent time in a favorite bar. The characters are memorable and the dialog is crisp, especially the final scene where the "happy couple" at last make kissable amends.
Great show!!! I recommend it!!! Do the VIP package if you have a chance.
The confusing part for me was the fact that in the beginning the waitress already had 4 kids but once the 2nd act started she was due to have her 4th. Confusing??? Overall I enjoyed the production and felt like I was a customer in the bar being a part of every conversation.
As long time Cheers fans we really enjoyed the play!
The stage looks like a picture of the bar, and when the song begins you are where everybody knows your name. The play follows the script for the TV show perfectly. The only problem is that I remembered all the lines from watching the show so many times. The audience got into it right from the begining. When Norm Peterson walks into the bar the audience all says Norm! Coach is still dim, Clif is still annoying and Harry the Hat still slippery, and Carla is still pregnant. Most of the players do a good job to bring the character to life. The only problem is that there are no new jokes and it seemed a bit slow.
The "Cheers" play was very entertaining -- the actors really captured the essence of the roles they played and were not just being characters from an old TV show. Quite honestly, this play reminded me of how great the dialogue was in the TV show and how well it translated to the stage. I thought the actors who played "coach" were outstanding as well as the Diane and Carla characters. The rest were very good -- no slackers for sure. It was a great play to see when you just want to sit back, laugh and enjoy the show. And I did enjoy saying "Norm" as well as singing the Cheers theme. And the 80's music before the show and during intermission was great as well. Note to future attendees: park in the Water Tower parking lot to get validated parking tickets. I paid way too much at a lot across the street. Lesson learned -- thanks for the great evening out.
The actors and actresses in the show looked and even talked just like the characters in the tv show. They even had their mannerisms down! The show was based off the first season of the tv show. The stage looked just like it did on tv. Such a fun show! The audience even gets to participate in it as well by yelling out "Norm" just like on tv ha! I would go see it again in a heart beat. Definitely worth the money. If you pay for VIP upgrade you get to go have drinks at the bar on Stage during intermission. If you loved this tv show you must Go see it!!
I was a fan of Cheers...the TV show not the play. It was dull and unimaginative. I left at intermission and found an open piano bar, which was great fun. It was not worth the price of admission.
It was wonderful...they did an awesome job of bringing the TV show to a live performance on stage...........
Well cast and hilarious play Enjoyable evening. Very much like the TV show. Highly recommend
