Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

  • Close Encounter with the Hornets

by BeMore on 10/11/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great time! We enjoyed sitting almost courtside and the children enjoyed the activities! We thought we would see a scrimmage but it was still interesting seeing them do other things!

  • So much fun!

by Britt on 10/10/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Last year we weren’t able to make it in, but this year we went early and enjoyed the entertainment! It was a great time and my son enjoyed himself - that’s all that matters. Thanks for a good time!

  • Fun event, a little disappointing

by JDH on 10/10/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 2 out of 5

The event was fun, but we were disappointed that the time time was reduced unexpectedly. The original announcement described a team scrimmage but that did not occur - apparently the reduced duration eliminated the team scrimmage. We drove a little over an hour to attend.

  • Very disappointed

    by Kamand4kids on 10/10/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 2 out of 5

Even thought the tickets were free the ride it was not worth the drive from Burlington to Charlotte. My 3 grandchildren were disappointed. It would have been nice if the team members had interacted with the audience.

  • A fun time!

    by Ashley L. on 10/10/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

This event was so much fun! I love how they're were balloons & caricature drawings for the kiddos! The staff were all friendly & the DJ in the front entrance was amazing! I only wish more food spots were open instead of just the BBQ place & snack stands. All in all, we had a really good time watching the players have fun on the court. I'm sure they enjoyed that break & some fun banter back & forth with each other.

  • The children had a great experience

by They were fun to watch Dell kept us entertained. The Emcee was great on 10/10/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

  • Fun but could be better

by Courtney on 10/10/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 3 out of 5

It was fun but it didn't last long enough. Wish we could have had more interaction with the team. It also would have been nice to get a free item like a tshirt or flag or hat something like that.

It was a nice free event, just didn’t last long enough and I was expecting the players to do a little more. (Scrimmage or autographs maybe)

  • disappointed

by Grandmama supporter on 10/10/23Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

no scrimmage was played. wanted to see the team 1st hand to judge our talent. would have been better than , drawing game or half court shots.. shocked how this year was compared to last year. spent an extra 119 on gear at store..
