Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

  • Good game, Loud, Concessions need better planning

by Experienced event attendee on 3/12/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 3 out of 5

Parking was easy with a 12 deck garage across the street. Entering was a breeze. Seats were easy to find. The game was good. The audio though is loud and their on purpose echoing, double echos so it sounds like a bunch of loud noise. Concession Menu boards have tiny lettering..needs a bigger font with rolling slides that have pictures This building has little to zero information on Concessions food ingredients. If you have a gluten allergy, good luck, vegetarian, good luck.. We walked both levels and asked the guest experience counters, they gave us a 6 week old screenshot of a text that said…we have salads and maybe gluten free buns here and here. Nope, no one had it. They had 6 weeks from that original text to provide their staff with a list of solutions…nope. That turned the event to a near zero for the member of our group with an allergy. It’s not hard to accommodate vegetarian or gluten free in concessions food. I got cold fries. The burger was alright. Big money for a souvenir cup, but no refills. Time to look for a new F&B partner. One who knows how to plan a menu. Their provider services many venues in this region, they should be better. I’m not a grumpy spectator, I worked in 3 NHL Arenas, 2 as Concessions Manager, a football stadium, 2 ballparks and 3 mid size arenas. I speak from knowledge and experience. Plan ahead, maybe eat elsewhere before you go, at lease until they catch on and make it better.

  • Great 😃

Good space for kids and parents to have fun and spend time together

  • Impressive

by Jrtdisney on 3/4/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Friendly staff upon entry. Super clean facilities…the bathroom attendant was working proactively each time I went in. The game itself was fun with giveaways and entertainment throughout . It never disappoints. Food was delicious and easy to order (despite being very expensive). We highly recommend.

  • Hornets Have Given Up

by Daddio on 3/3/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 2 out of 5

Aside from everything costing an arm and a leg it was a lackluster game. My son is a Bucks fan which is the only reason we went to the game.

  • Fantastic

by Crosara on 2/18/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

It was incredible!! Fantastic event!! My family was amazed by the structure, the access, the organization, nothing but praise!!

  • Great experience

Great experience but the prices on food and drinks was ridiculously expensive. But overall it was a great experience for everyone.

  • Hornets Game Experience

We had a great time! Very entertaining experience from the moment we got there until the end of the game!

  • Love The Hornets Experience

by Rod Stingray on 2/10/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Great experience when coming to the Spectrum Center. I love the live atmosphere each time I attend a Hornets game. The food is delicious. I also enjoy purchasing the Hornets memorabilia.

  • Had a great time

by Jordan and Will on 2/8/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

This arena is just too steep and not friendly for folks that are even partially mobility restricted. Our seats were on the very top row. The climb up is hard for folks trying to carry concessions, and very challenging for those that have even mild mobility problems. The coliseum on Tyvola road was much nicer for spectators. I do like having the arena in the central business district, but the darn thing needs to be flattened out. We attend multiple events a year here, but we enjoy the arenas in other communities better. Food choices are great, service at some stands is weak, they run out of pretzels and fries too fast, especially during half time. The food itself is surprisingly good. All of the staff, including the ushers, the security, everybody is just as nice and welcoming as can be.

  • Lakers vs Charlotte

by Jaz on 2/8/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

I would’ve gave a 5 if we didn’t have the experience we did. I brought this gift for my husband. He is a huge lebron fan and he drove 4 hours to see this game. He got to the game and the entire Ticketmaster was done and he could not get in the game and I tried calling but could not speak to anyone. Luckily the worker at the stadium was dealing with many customers that was going through this and was able to find his tickets from the order number and was able to text him the tickets to get in. I’m truly upset at the fact that ticket master would crash leaving so many people to miss out on an event they paid for if the stadium workers weren’t able to work. My husband got to finally see Lebron play and idk if I’ll be ordering from ticket master in the future.

  • Terrible Sound System

by KB on 2/8/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 2 out of 5

All we could hear the entire game was the rattling of a busted speaker. I would have rather not hear any music or announcing than to listen to the rattling of the speaker in the upper level all night. Do better spectrum center.

  • AMAZING

by JShine on 2/2/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

very simple and useful. I plan on using Ticketmaster for everyone of my future events

  • Super Friendly

by Joseph on 2/1/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

The one thing that stood out was that the staff at Spectrum Center were amazing. Every single staff member we interacted with was great. Super friendly, super energetic and so helpful when needed. Probably the most genuine and friendly staff that I've seen at an Arena.

  • Awesome

    by Mark G on 2/1/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

I am a die hard Knick fan for 50 years and also like the Hornets a lot. I love watching the NBA at the Spectrum Cente, not a bad seat in the house

  • Amazing!

  • No thanks

by Pistol Peter on 1/23/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

Playing music during the game is cheeseball. Won’t be returning for another game.

  • Unforgettable memories

by MJ on 1/22/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

It was unforgivable for my family. Hornets won and we were excited. We will watch and cheer again.

  • Surprisingly Superb

by MikeL on 1/22/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

We scored 4 tickets with a surprisingly great view of the game. The price was great for that area and row. Will definitely seek out these seats again.

  • Disappointed in the players

by Gail on 1/17/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

The staff was great! I was very disappointed in most the players, my son and 2 other young boys were VIP and stood at the walk way most of the game trying to get autographs, the players totally ignored them.

  • Great venue

by StephenB on 1/12/24Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Best seats in the arena. Great view of the game. Usher very polite, yet enthusiastic at the game
