About

Hailed as a "must-see live performer" by Rolling Stone, and a "force to be reckoned with" by CMT, Charley Crockett crafts his singular "Gulf & Western" sound -- described as "very 21st century and very vintage" by NPR Music -- by synthesizing country, blues, soul, Cajun, R&B and other pieces of American Roots music. And when his voice comes out of your speakers, there is no confusing him for any other artist. As the Wall Street Journal writes, "Mr. Crockett's unique vocal style is one third Ernest Tubb honky-tonk with clipped-word diction, one third Bill Withers low-key, soulful crooning, and one third jazzy French Quarter second-line swagger."

With his latest album $10 Cowboy, Crockett didn't set out to make a themed record. He had released a concept album in 2022, the critically acclaimed The Man From Waco, propelling Crockett to new heights and establishing him as one of the leaders of a sparkling revival of traditional country and folk music.

For the follow up album, Crockett wrote freely, over a two-month period, as he wound his way across the United States on the back of a tour bus. The resulting songs--raw, personal, vivid portraits of a country in transition--ended up being connected after all.

"This material is written at truck stops, it's written at casinos, it's written in the alleys behind the venues, it's written in my truck parked up on South Congress in Austin," explains Crockett. "A ramblin' man like me, a genuine transient, is in a pretty damn good position to have something to say about America."

The album begins with the title track, a personal song that also offers a provocative idea about America. "A $10 Cowboy is a country singer who made himself on a street corner in America," Crockett says. "But the cowboy way, the cowboy mindset, that applies to anyone who doesn't feel free, who feels fenced in and bound to something."

As the album unfolds, you begin to understand that a $10 Cowboy is anyone who has hustled to get by, who didn't fit in, who has slept on other people's couches, or the street, who has fallen down, gotten up, and ventured from home chasing a paying gig, or a new start.

The album was recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin, produced by Crockett and his long-time collaborator Billy Horton. It was recorded live to tape, with anywhere from 6-12 musicians on each track, giving the songs the feel of a live performance. It's a sound Crockett has been after for years. "The reason I cut it on tape is, when you get the right folks in the room, great players rise to the occasion. When that red light is on and the tape is rolling, you get the magic of a performance."

Crockett released his last full-length album The Man From Waco - which Rolling Stone named the #2 best Country album of the year - in 2022, and the momentum he built continued into 2023. Crockett made his NPR Tiny Desk debut, was a guest on The Daily Show, and appeared on the June 2023 cover of Texas Monthly. Crockett performed at both nights of Willie Nelson's 90th birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl in April 2023, and made his Bonnaroo debut last summer. Crockett also released The Man From Waco Redux, a companion to The Man From Waco featuring alternate versions of five songs, and Live from the Ryman, which documented Crockett's sold out November 2022 debut at the Mother Church of Country Music.

HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE all performers. Incredible band, and boy what a show!!

  • seated or no?

by D.Lyons on 5/11/25Brown County Music Center - NashvilleRating: 4 out of 5

The acts were great. But the venue is a little awkward. There are assigned seats— but when 10% of the crowd decides to stand, it blocks the others and causes conflict. I don’t know what the solution is, but that’s my observation. Watching people argue took away from the experience.

  • A solid “A” all-around !

by Brent on 5/11/25Brown County Music Center - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

From ticket purchase to venue to the actual show, a great experience for our group ! Charley is a tremendous talent & his show was awesome ! His ability to play live and sound mostly like his recordings, while keeping it fresh, is much appreciated. It was my 4th show in 2.5 years and it just keeps getting better !

Charley Crockett in concert at the Brown County Music Center was a wonderful birthday present! The facility was just the right size and the music sounded great. It seemed there wasn't a bad seat in the place. Charley and his band were outstanding performers!

  • Crockett brings again!

by $10 Cowboy on 5/8/25Hard Rock Live Rockford - RockfordRating: 5 out of 5

This is my second time seeing Charley Crockett in the last 10 months and he continues to bring it and never seems to slow down. It was a fabulous show that covered songs from many of his albums, a few covers, some solo acoustic and full-band songs. As a huge fan of Charley, I couldn't have asked for anything more. Just an absolute "full effort"show and experience. The Hard Rock casino in Rockford was surprisingly an awesome venue to see a show. It's clean, organized and the lines moved fast. With it being a Sunday night, the crowd was a little more subdued but overall a fun time was had by one and all. I would definitely go back and see a concert there. I can't wait to see Charley again at the Salt Shed in October. It won't be as intimate as this show but another great place to see live music. The Lonesome Drifter album has been an excellent transition to what I consider a little more bluesy than $10 Cowboy & Visions of Dallas. Either way, you need to catch Charley now as he slowly conquers the Blues-Country universe. I don't care what future Crockett shows cost, I'll be in attendance if it's within 60 miles of my home.

  • Unexcited

by Rox on 3/24/25Choctaw Grand Theater - DurantRating: 3 out of 5

I like his old stuff better. He didn't play my favorite song and the one that made me a fan. "I'm not Afraid (to love you). He didn't talk to the crowd. I have seen him many times before, but this was unexciting.

  • great show!

by cammi bates on 3/24/25Choctaw Grand Theater - DurantRating: 5 out of 5

even the songs I didn’t know I really enjoyed. his songs are solid, his band is tight but loose, and he puts on a good show. I really enjoyed the little interludes the band would play while he switched guitars or stuff like that.

  • Fantastic music at an awesome venue

by Jon on 11/16/24Steelhouse Omaha - OmahaRating: 5 out of 5

Charley Crockett may not be a household name (YET), but what a wonderful concert by a veteran folk-country-BLUES artist! He has an eerie similarity in style to Johnny Cash, and 60s-70s artists! His stage presence is awesome and he sounds great in concert and puts on a GREAT SHOW. Go see Charley Crockett, you won't regret it.

  • One of the Best Live Performers of Today

by Daryl G on 11/12/24Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

Charley Crockett is one of the best live musical acts you will find today. Backed by the unbelievably talented band The Blue Drifters, Charley and his band will play you a unique blend of country and rhythm and blues. Charley’s vocals and guitar playing is so incredible by itself, then add in the bass, drums, steel guitar, keys plus the trumpet. It’s such an incredible sound. Charley’s dancing and stage presence captures your attention also throughout the whole show!

  • Wonderful concert. CC was great!

Charley Crockett’s voice is solid gold. Sounds like a crooner from the days of old. Outstanding concert.

I discovered Charley via outlaw radio on sirus xm... loved his style, sound, story from the beginning .. As a respiratory therapist I also was intrigued by his heart story... as someone who has lived in The Valley I also love his grit and determination. Thank you Mr. Crockett
