About

Often considered one of grindcore's founding fathers, Carcass were among the first bands of the extreme metal genre to try a different lyrical approach -- one that reflected a fascination with surgical gadgets and peculiar words straight out of a med student's textbook. Hailing from the same locale that spawned the Fab Four -- in case you lived under a rock for the past few decades, Liverpool -- Carcass were originally formed in 1985 by singer/guitarist Bill Steer (who would later play with Napalm Death) and drummer Ken Owen. By 1987, singer/bassist Jeff Walker had signed on with the band, resulting in a deal with Earache Records shortly after. The trio then issued a pair of full-lengths that are often considered classics of the grindcore genre, 1988's Reek of Putrefaction and 1989's Symphonies of Sickness.

Shortly after the dawn of the '90s, Carcass expanded to a quartet, as Michael Amott signed on as second guitarist, resulting in two more favorites of the metal underground, 1991's Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious and 1992's four-song EP Tools of the Trade. Whereas he once sang in a growling voice à la a dragon desperately in need of some Pepto-Bismol, Walker adopted a slightly more traditional metal singing style, while the band was no longer afraid to let Iron Maiden-esque guitar work enter the mix. The result was the group's major-label debut for Sony, 1994's Heartwork. Although Heartwork is probably Carcass' best-known album, fan reaction is often split evenly between those who feel the group had sold out with a more easily digestible sound (quite comparable to thrash metal) and those who feel that it's one of the '90s great metal releases.

Either way, Amott left the group around this time, and was replaced by Carlo Regadas for Carcass' final studio album, 1996's appropriately titled Swansong. The same year, a compilation of rarities was issued, Wake Up and Smell the Carcass. Subsequently, Owen, Walker, and Regadas continued working together for a spell under the Blackstar name; Amott formed both Spiritual Beggars and Arch Enemy; and Steer surprisingly formed a blues-rock power trio, Firebird. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

This was the best show I’ve seen in my life.

by Stephanie MC on 4/10/23The Masquerade - Heaven - Atlanta

I’ve been an avid fan of this band and recently have rediscovered my love for extreme metal after taking a long break. I could not believe how incredible this sounded and made me feel. I laughed, I CRIED. IT HEALED ME. Carcass is definitely the best band I have ever seen live and in a small venue like the one I was in was an absolutely spiritual experience. I look forward to being alive again, just for this. Thank you.

by Ummmm on 4/4/23The Observatory - Santa Ana

Carcass and the whole lineup kicked ass... The venue itself, if u dont get there early then there is no way to see the stage.. Personally I would rather see the bands , rather than having to fight people constantly from trying to take my spot!

    Carcass in the flesh

    by kay on 5/19/22

Carcass is so great live if your even a little bit of a fan of them I would definitely recommend going. They played all the hits from the newer albums plus some old songs. From beginning to end it was constantly brutal and totally worth it.

    Carcass

by Señor Pancakes on 5/18/22191 Toole - Tucson

Carcass has been one of my all time favorite metal bands since the early 90’s. I’ve seen them multiple times in multiple cities over the years. They haven’t lost a beat and sound better than ever! We’re lucky to have them. Tidbit: Steve from Denver’s Cephalic Carnage was running sound for them.

Came for Vio-Lence / Seats were Carcass

by Brett on 1/14/20South Side Ballroom - Dallas

First this was a great show overall and we had a blast. However, I bought seats (pretty expensive) to ensure my date and I had a good spot. It was - the seats were great. But, there were 2 stages and the band I wanted to see most (Vio-Lence) played on the other stage. Same with Razor. Great band, but played on the other stage where we had to stand. Don't discount this and say "who takes a date to a Viol-Lence concert?". I do. My only recommendation for next year would be to figure out who will be playing where when you offer seats. Had I know the band I came to see was away from my seats, I would have done general admission and saved a few hundred bucks. Good time overall and I hope Razor and Vio-Lence are invited back next year for the main stage.

Carcass & The Black Dahlia Murder AWESOME

by thrashnbash on 4/15/14Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Noisem - Showed up late and unfortunately missed them. Gorguts I thought were just terrible. I haven't listened to them in several years, but what I heard was not what I enjoyed. The Black Dahlia was awesome. The PA system I thought was breaking up a bit when they were playing. Outside of that though they were phenomenal. Carcass - these guys are legends. They didn't seem to have as much issues with the PA. Bill Steer was humorous with his very dry humor. They were fantastic.

Carcass and Gorguts were great on the same bill!

by RottingSouls on 4/13/14Newport Music Hall - Columbus

I am an older fan of extreme metal, in the scene for over 25 years. It is uncommon for me to make it to shows anymore, too many responsibilities and too high ticket prices! I have always wanted to see Carcass live and when I saw confirmed dates for the tour, I knew nothing would stop me and my good buddies from attending. The opening band, Noisem, were ok. Good to see the youth still carrying the flag of heaviness. The second band, Gorguts, are incredible! I have seen them live several times previously and they are absolutely spellbinding live, especially when playing their new material! The Black Dahlia Murder were very good live. They did a great job stirring up the kids in the crowd. Fun to watch. Honestly, I wasn't sure how well Carcass would be live, considering only half the original lineup is intact. They quickly put my mind at ease, blasting out an excellent mix of new and very old material. Very tight, energetic and sounded really good on almost all of the melodic lead guitar work. They clearly still enjoy playing goregrind for their fans. Special thanks to guitarist Ben Ash, who was suffering from a stomach illness. Ben toughed it out with the spirit of a true metal warrior. Excellent show!!

I would definitely go this venue again. It was small and that's a good thing. Good acoustics and it let you be close to the bands.

    Carcass killed it!!!!

by Opeth666 on 4/13/14Paradise Rock Club - Boston

I've been a huge fan of Carcass since their first album. They put on one hell of a show, covering every album. They went deep in their catalog and didn't stick to just the new stuff. If your a fan of Carcass check them out when they come around.

    Carcass was brutal

by Vikingthunder on 4/10/14Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Absolutely amazing Death Metal show. Didn't know Noizem before but I became a fan right then and there when I saw them. Wasn't too familiar with Gorguts, but they were absolutely amazing and I have been listening to them constantly for the past few days. The Black Dahlia Murder was absolutely brutal live. They sounded great, and they had amazing energy, and the pits were crazy. The headliner, Carcass, blew my mind. Before the show I'd heard a few songs here and there, and I have been jamming to the new album, Surgical Steel, since it came out. I recognized a bunch of what they played, luckily, but I also got to hear some awesome stuff I'd never heard before. I loved their sense of humor when they would joke between songs, and they just sounded so great, and they were full of energy which was great in the mosh pits.

    Carcass is amazing live!

by Hrafnkel on 4/10/14STAGE AE - Pittsburgh

I went primarily because I'm a fan of Gorguts, who were fantastic (although both I and the band wished their set was longer). In the weeks leading up to the show, I familiarized myself more with Carcass, and they really grew on me. Their songs are incredible live; they execute with absolutely brutal precision. This will no doubt be the heaviest show I see all year, and I see lots of metal shows. Black Dahlia Murder was also excellent; they have great energy and you can tell they enjoy the hell out of being on stage. I did not get there in time to see Noisem or Derketa. Bottom line: if you even remotely like metal, go to this show. You won't regret it.
