About Camping World Kickoff

The Camping World Kickoff is college football's way of saying hello. Held on opening weekend in Orlando's Camping World Stadium — formerly known as the Citrus Bowl — the game is the leftmost bookend to the season, with two prominent teams playing on a neutral site in a bowl-like atmosphere.

College football has a way of making novelties seem like long-standing traditions. So it is with the Camping World Kickoff, which debuted in 2016 with a shootout between the No. 4 Florida State Seminoles and the No. 11 Ole Miss Rebels. The Seminoles rallied from 22 points down thanks to the arm and legs of their redshirt freshman quarterback, Deondre Francois. After a year off, the Kickoff returned in 2018 with the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide, the defending national champions, routing the Louisville Cardinals, 51-14.

If the game feels like it's always been around, that might have something to do with the Depression-era stadium. Owned and operated by the city of Orlando, Camping World Stadium is one of college football's classic venues, occasionally maligned but reliable and home to a lot of memorable football, Monster Jams, soccer and even cameos in the TV series Coach. Built in 1936 under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, what was then called Orlando Stadium had a stadium capacity of 8,900. As college football grew, so did the stadium. By the end of the century, the Florida Citrus Bowl, as it was known, was a fully modern, 65,000-capacity facility. It got another series of upgrades and, in 2016, a new name. Today, Camping World Stadium visitors will find clean sightlines and plenty of tailgating opportunities near the stadium.

Great game, below avg stadium experience

by Thacrane on 9/4/18Camping World Stadium - Orlando

First time to the camping world stadium. Stadium sits in a very rough part of town, so an uber is a must even from the close hotels. The fanfest was disappointing, felt more like the state fair with the only food options a fried fair food shack and thankfully a local bbq food truck. The stadium itself is quite old and small (~60k seats). We had the upgraded open air club seats, which was nice for bathroom access, however food and beer was very disappointing. The only beer option was Coors light...take it or leave it. Overall great game, but this venue leaves a lot desired, especially with the price of tickets. I wouldn't attend a other game here.

Alabama/Louisville game was a good game for me as a BAMA fan, however, prices for food and water was ridiculous. Also, more areas were needed to sell food. They need two jumbo trons. The two smaller screens were inadequate. Also alcoholic beverages should be limited as drunks abounded and they were very distracting!

    Football setup

by Hopeful44m on 9/4/18Camping World Stadium - Orlando

Worst experience I have ever had at a college football event. So many poor things, I can't list them all. Traffic control was very limited and poorly managed. The stairs we entered the stadium on were shut down at the end oft he game with no explanation. We had to walk halfway around the stadium to get out. By the time we did, they had reopened the stairs they had said were closed. They were totally unprepared for concessions even though the crowd was announced at something like only 57,000. They had enough people working concessions for maybe 20,000. I can live with paying $9 for a hamburger if it is decent. I don't have a dog but if I did, I would not have given him the dog biscuit that passed for a $9 burger. The PA system for the people that spoke before the game and the officials during the game basically never worked. How this dump achieved a deal to host a decent college football game is beyond me. Bush league from start to finish.

    Roll Tide

Ballgame was awesome but stadium needs some work. Vendor pricing for food is ridiculously expensive. And not getting to keep your bottle top? Cmon man!!

Not a good stadium—poorly managed. Food and beverage options in the club level were the worst I’ve seen. Sight lines from the seats were good.

    Open air club

by FLALLine on 9/4/18Camping World Stadium - Orlando

We sat in section 33 row S. Great seats and they were under the overhang in case it rained. It started pouring a few minutes before the game but luckily we were in the open air club enjoying a few drinks so we stayed dry. Having separate bathrooms was wonderful, never a line. However, one of the stalls was already out of paper before the game ever started and two more did not have a lock. There should be a bathroom attendant to make sure it stays supplied and maintenance needs to stay up on it. But all in all it was a nice bathroom and worth the extra price. Bartenders and concession stand people were super nice. We did have to wait in a VERY LONG line to get our arm bands to be let in the area. They only had two people putting armbands on and they were turtle slow. We stood in line at least 30 minutes to get the bands. Just a very inefficient process that could be done so much faster. All in all a decent mid size stadium experience. Parked in a residents yard for $20. Super easy to get in and out with zero traffic headed our way.

Getting into stadium was a disaster

by BamaFan31 on 9/4/18Camping World Stadium - Orlando

Imagine shoving 50,000 plus people into someone’s front door... that was what it was like getting into the stadium. I get it, and I am a huge proponent of security, but the way the fans were handled getting into the venue was not the way to go about that. The people that were causing all the hold up were not even knowledgeable about what they were looking for. It was beyond ridiculous, to say the least!! I won’t be going back to that venue for any event.
