    California Pops concert

    by Ron3827 on 4/6/17Flint Center - Cupertino

I have mixed feelings about this performance. I attended an earlier show and was very pleased with the soprano Karen Honji. However, sitting in premium seating, I thought there is something wrong with this orchestra. It had a full complement of strings (except for only one cello bass - an oddity) but they seldom soared with the melodic lines of the tuneful music. The root problem is that the brass (and the reeds) dominate. They need to scale the orchestra back to Mantovani or Andre Rieu complements - that is, no more than two trumpets, two trombones, two French horns, one tuba, etc. Both Fiedler and John Williams got more mileage out of their arrangements than this orchestra. There need to be an accordion part as well as a synthezer as well as more basses (as mentioned before). I think I saw a guitar player on stage; if not then they should add one. The music was of course very good but I have heard better arrangements elsewhere.

This was an excellent show. This group just performs 4 or 5 times a year at this venue. We have been attending their performances for several years, and find it to be very entertaining and enjoyable.

California Pops Orchestra put on an amazing show. They really perform like a world class orchestra. The Flint Center venue works well too. Great music and great musicians! THe conductor, Kim Venaas, is very entertaining too.

    Beautiful Music, Needed Holiday Backdrop.

by SkinnyRed on 12/21/16Flint Center - Cupertino

Music was wonderful, as always. Conductor was charming, as always. Orchestra was dressed elegantly. The very high, all white panels in the back need some kind of Christmas back drop on them. It really took away from the ambiance. Trying to get all 67 requests in makes for too many medleys. I'd like a few more full Christmas songs.

Awesome music. Great musicians. The Black Tie Jazz Big Band brought the big band sound to life. The California Pops Orchestra added a glamour to the numbers.
