California Pops concert
by Ron3827 on 4/6/17Flint Center - CupertinoI have mixed feelings about this performance. I attended an earlier show and was very pleased with the soprano Karen Honji. However, sitting in premium seating, I thought there is something wrong with this orchestra. It had a full complement of strings (except for only one cello bass - an oddity) but they seldom soared with the melodic lines of the tuneful music. The root problem is that the brass (and the reeds) dominate. They need to scale the orchestra back to Mantovani or Andre Rieu complements - that is, no more than two trumpets, two trombones, two French horns, one tuba, etc. Both Fiedler and John Williams got more mileage out of their arrangements than this orchestra. There need to be an accordion part as well as a synthezer as well as more basses (as mentioned before). I think I saw a guitar player on stage; if not then they should add one. The music was of course very good but I have heard better arrangements elsewhere.
