    Mixed

by DC on 12/25/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

As a veteran ballet mom whose daughter has danced all the lead roles in CBCs Nutcracker, there was much I missed of the old version. Glad to see John Stubbs leading the SD Symphony musicians! Act l was beautiful although I felt the Clara role was watered down a bit, maybe they are younger this year. Emma Sherman as Doll was adorable!!! The mice were wonderful!!! Snow scene was gorgeous lead by elegant Ana da Costa. Act ll started well but lost me a few times. Arabian was technically more difficult than in the old version and Rena Gyulai brought down the house with her spectacular performance! I was quite disappointed with Waltz of the Flowers. The old costumes and choreography were much more visually pleasing and the Dewdrop role was lackluster. It used to be a special part danced by soloists and principals but left me flat, although the costume is a nice improvement! I was sad to see her bow in the back row in the Apotheosis. Again Emma Sherman was a showstopper as lead Candy Cane. She also danced corps roles in this show and was a standout. Hopefully this outstanding young dancer will move up the ranks! I would have loved to see her Sugar Plum with Jeremy. Hardest working dancer I would think! With improvements in Act ll and Apotheosis needs more bravura moments this will be a great show!!

The settings were beautiful! The choreography this year was not as good as last though. Definitely going again next year.

    Fabulous Show

by K. C. on 12/24/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

What a delight! The show was fun, beautiful and well done. The cast from the teeny tiny all the way through gave their best. The dancers appeared to love their craft. The Symphony was outstanding!

    Wonderful

by M. P. on 12/23/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Wonderful. Kid friendly. My 3 year old daughter loved it. I was worried that the dancers might not be good as it a kid friendly performance. They were all excellent. I will be back next year.

    Amazing performance!

by h. h. on 12/22/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

This was one of the most beautifully performed nutcrackers we have been to. Between the sets, costumes, choreography, and beautiful dancing it was just perfect. Thank you Vettix for allowing us to participate in this holiday tradition! Magical night!

    Amazing!

by Mnristy on 12/22/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

First time my family and I have been to a ballet and we were not disappointed. Everything was incredible! The music, the dancing, and the best part was seeing all the adorable little kids taking part in it.

    Lovely New Production

by L. C. San Diego on 12/18/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The newest staging of the Nutcracker is engaging, gorgeous and enjoyable. That said, during the performance, three ballerinas fell on stage. This also happened the first time I saw California Ballet’s Nutcracker 25 years ago, which was one of the main reasons I had not returned to their production. It is somewhat surprising that they haven’t seemed able to overcome this particular “hallmark” of their Nutcracker performance.

Soooo disappointed in the “new” Nutcracker ballet

by Foxynana on 12/17/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

We have loved attending The Nutcracker ballet in its classic and classy form for the past 4 years as part of our family’s Christmas traditions. However, the California Ballet Company presented their “new” interpretation of The Nutcracker which sadly diverted from its classy and classic beauty and the new director added bits and pieces in scenes that my family and I did not consider appropriate for my grandchildren to see and which took away from the classiness of this ballet. The audience was disrespectful at times, loud and obnoxious and we felt like we were at a high production instead of a classy ballet. So disappointing. We will not be attending or supporting this ballet company’s productions anymore.

    Awesome Show!

by N. P. on 12/17/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The new California Ballet NUTCRACKER was OUTSTANDING! New sets, new costumes, new choreography - wonderful dancing. It was so creative and absolutely beautiful. There were surprises too - a true Holiday must see. Complements to Jared Nelson for putting on a spectacular show in every way. All the dancers were spot on, and incorporating the little to big kids in such a magical way was pure delight. Thank you to Jared Nelson and every single member of the California Ballet - all your hard work shined on the stage. BEST SHOW EVER!

    Watered down choreography

by Wadisch on 12/17/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Really disliked the "new and improved" nutcracker. I thought the costumes where static and didnt flow with the dancers, and there were almost no tutus. They added more "visual effects" like smoke and fog and snow but honestly who cares when the dancing is so sub par. They should have just left it alone and let Maxine Mahons version be.

New show full of beauty and fun

by H. S. on 12/16/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I've been attending the nutcracker at San Diego for years. This year the the show has been updated and although I can't say I loved every change (setting of act 2) I will say that overall the changes have been for the better. The new sets and costumes are beautiful and act one has gained new life that I never knew it could have. I look forward to seeing this rendition for years to come.

    Not the beloved Nutcracker

by Chrissy14223 on 12/16/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

This year, the San Diego Nutcracker decided to reimagine its traditional ballet, and although I had hoped it would still be just as amazing, it was not. I found some of the changes crude and much of the magic and familiarity in which i return to this ballet year after year to be gone. What a shame.

    Odd interpretation

by B. on 4/18/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

We were unsure during the first half if it was even the correct ballet. The dancing was wonderful but the storyline was just bizarre. We still cannot figure out who the men in loin clothes were representing. Seriously, the first half was just odd. The second half picked up the actual story of Cinderella and when that started, it was wonderful. It felt like two separate ballets, with two separate choreographers.
