Calgary Wranglers History

The Calgary Wranglers are a professional hockey team in the American Hockey League (AHL). The Wranglers trace their founding back to the Maine Mariners in 1977, but after several moves throughout the years, the Stockton Heat relocated to Calgary and were renamed the Calgary Wranglers ahead of the 2022–2023 AHL season. The name change itself was notable for reviving the same moniker as the former local Western Hockey League team, who played in Calgary from 1977 to 1987. In their inaugural AHL season, the Wranglers led the league in wins and regular season points, the latter of which earned the team the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy.

Calgary Wranglers at Scotiabank Saddledome

The Calgary Wranglers moved into downtown Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome following the team’s relocation to Stampede City in 2022. Despite its relatively new occupants, the Scotiabank Saddledome is no stranger to hockey, having hosted the NHL’s Calgary Flames since its opening in 1983 as well as the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen since 1995. The 19,280-seat arena also accommodated the Wranglers’ predecessor, the Stockton Heat, in 2021 prior to the team’s move.

The Stockton Arena is very nice, the games are fun, tickets are reasonable, Sunday night has reduced soda and hot dog prices so you can actually afford to bring your family.

    Get it together

by TomHsgirl on 11/22/17Stockton Arena - Stockton

There was hardly anyone there. We had 4 boys ages 9-11 who danced and clapped at every break and never once got on the screen. The super heroes didn't come into or near the crowd once the game started. There could be so much more done to create an interactive experience.

    Not a Family Atmosphere

    by Knees2Faces26 on 5/1/17Stockton Arena - Stockton

Took the family to a hockey playoff game between the Stockton Heat and San Jose Barracuda. It was hard to enjoy the game when the Stockton Heat fans cuss at you,put signs in your face and wave their rally towels hitting you in the head and face. The arena needs some help. The floors are sticky and several seat are broken. It use to be a nice place to watch hockey but that must of left when the Stockton Thunder moved. Sad to see that has happened.

    New hockey fan

by IEspyFACE on 3/31/17Stockton Arena - Stockton

Great atmosphere and energy for a farm team. Good seats and competitive play made for a great night. Also a couple of fights never hurt either.

Action packed Heat / Barracuda game

    by thunder999 on 3/21/17Stockton Arena - Stockton

One of the best hockey games my son and I have ever watched in Stockton! Lots of action and LOTS of fighting! This game is the way ALL hockey games should be played. Too bad the Heat lost. The Stockton Arena needs to have better food options. Both my son and I don't eat meat so the veggie options and food quality are poor. We have been going to watch the games at the arena for many years and the food hasn't improved much. How about looking into that?

    Excellent entertainment for the money!

by NewHeatFan on 3/21/17Stockton Arena - Stockton

This is my first year attending Heat games, and I have enjoyed myself thoroughly at each of them (I've gone to about four or five now). It seems like almost every night they are offering a giveaway, and this night was no different. The first 1000 fans received a replica Heat jersey. It was Faith night, and a local Christian band performed during intermission and after the game. Fans could meet some of the players at the post-game concert, or at the nearby hotel, all for free. The players were really nice, and it was a great experience overall. Considering my tickets cost roughly $60 total (bought two, right on the glass), I feel I got a lot of bang for my buck. I've already bought season tickets for next year just for this reason. Go, Heat, go!

it was my 1st hockey game - i expected more contact and aggressiveness but they were more skating and finessing the puck - they didnt have many calls because they were not aggressive

    Heat vs Gulls

    by ITman7 on 12/6/16Stockton Arena - Stockton

The seats were good and the game was exciting. We were having a great time, and had a bunch of empty seats around us as we were 2nd row behind the player bench. Then came 3rd period when people decided to change seats and move down closer. Surrounding us. Little kids, fine. But obnoxious adults - not fine. Also the ushers were completely worthless. The place would be better off without them. The fans who were already seated were more helpful than the ushers. One lead us to 3 incorrect seats before finally finding where our seats were located.

    Except a great time

by Pitmans on 11/21/16Stockton Arena - Stockton

We sat in the accessible seats and everyone who worked in the area was friendly and enthusiastic. Our seats were better than I thought comparing them to other arena.. they were a bargain for the price. Problems: we were told the elevator was out of service and we had to walk around the entire arena pushing my son's wheelchair through lots of young kids..not fun. I was a little shocked this wasn dealt with earlier in the day anticipating the game that night. WHEN leaving after game we were told to grab a free give away BUT the man giving them away was very rude saying why do you get one..I only have three left. The place was empty of all fans. I told him it's a promotion and I was told to come to him and Yes he was very mad shaking his head. I guess he was wanting them for himself. Other than that the players were awesome food great too.

    Pleasantly THRILLED!

by rfdlyons on 11/14/16Stockton Arena - Stockton

Friends from Australia wanted to see "American Ice Hockey" and the San Jose Sharks were not in town so we drove to Stockton from Bay Area. Don't take Hwy 4; go freeway. What a fun night! Dinner at Nena's - tasty inexpensive Mexican food. $22 seats were excellent. "Old school" ice hockey style play; hilarious fans; small-town promotions and games; kid friendly; look forward to a reason to return!

Great place to sit for the game

by sokrlovr on 10/24/16Stockton Arena - Stockton

We had seats in the club section and really enjoyed the comfort and the view of the game. The game was good and I was impressed that there was more hockey than fighting - we do go to watch to game after all. Disappointed in the turnout for the game as the arena felt pretty empty but that will not keep us from going again. Staff is exceptionally friendly for this kind of venue.

    Very exciting and enjoyable

    by newfan16 on 4/4/16Stockton Arena - Stockton

It was my first time to a Stockton Heat game. And it was my daughter's first time to a hockey game ever. I was not sure what to expect of the quality of play in the AHL. While watching the teams warmup, I thought that there was some pretty good talent on the ice. I thought the overall play and skills shown during the game was NHL like. The game was not played as physically as the NHL level and a few players were not as skilled as others, but hey, these are farm teams. I am very happy we went to watch the game. Will try to get to another game before the season ends.
