About

As they approach their twentieth anniversary, CAKE’s adherence to their original guiding principles has only grown stronger. Formed during the nineties as a somewhat antagonistic answer to grunge, CAKE’s democratic processes, defiant self-reliance, and lucid yet ever-inventive music has made them a nation-state unto themselves, with no obvious peers, belonging to no school.  In addition to writing, arranging, producing, and performing their own music, they have taught themselves to engineer their recording projects in their own solar-powered studio, which actually generates more power than is needed to run it, causing the building’s electrical meter to run in reverse. CAKE’s most recent album, Showroom of Compassion, was released on their own Upbeat Records label and debuted on the US Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at #1 during 2011 -- making the album as pure an extension of the DIY aesthetic as ever attempted by an established act.

    Great Concert Experience

by TR 79 on 9/14/23FOELLINGER THEATRE - Fort Wayne

Kudos to Cake and the Frohlinger Theater (Fort Wayne) venue & staff. Free and available parking + starting on-time with no warm-up band + two great music sets and a tree give-away = A+ experience!

    Fun show

by Kgcake on 9/14/23The Salt Shed - Chicago

We saw Cake at another venue a few years ago, and this show was much better than the previous one. Cake had a lot more energy and played all our favorites songs. The Salt Shed is a cool venue that enhances a concert. We had a great time.

    More Cake, less filling

by foto on 9/13/23The Salt Shed - Chicago

Band sounded good and it was a perfect night to be outdoors. Would love to have heard more music and less talking. I'd prefer no intermission as well, personally.

Can never have too much CAKE

by MrsRecess on 9/13/23The Salt Shed - Chicago

Saw them at the Salt Shed in Chicago—it was such a fun show! John’s interactions with the crowd were great and they gave away a Witch Hazel tree. Definitely should see them live if you’re a fan!

    A perfect night

by Andy on 9/13/23The Salt Shed - Chicago

The band was phenomenal and the venue was amazing. Cake played every song I’d hoped they would. The Salt Shed is an excellent venue with great food, drink, and views. Parking was a breeze and it is the easiest place to drive to and out of in Chicago.

    Where was the sound?

by Rtoro73 on 9/13/23The Salt Shed - Chicago

Sadly, this concert was boring. And terrible sound. We could hear conversations over any mic singing by the band. Disappointing.

Cake always puts on a fantastic show!

by Ren on 9/13/23The Salt Shed - Chicago

Cake is such a solid band. They are incredibly skilled musicians and it is just so much fun to watch their studio songs come alive in a concert setting - watching every trumpet key and guitar strum. They are great at keeping the crowd active participants in a positive and engaging show. They have been my favorite band since like 1996 and I always can’t wait until I can see them again next. They always play in venues that are excellent fits for them.

    Not missing a beat

    by LouBeDoo on 9/12/23

Tripped out to Chicago to a great newer venue to revisit Cake Pulled the crowd In from the getgo The full house knew every word to every song and shouted them out from start to finish As happy as you’ll see most people packed in to a venue- wish they could’ve played on, Hope they add some dates near Omaha

    Cool venue. Good Show.

by MJR on 9/5/23The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

Enjoyed Rooftop at Pier 17 venue in NYC. Enjoyed the concert as well. The founder of the band likes to talk and that rubbed a few folks the wrong way. I didn't care. They put on a great show!

    Nostalgia

    by JT on 7/28/23

Great visit back in time to an alt favorite. Cake is fresh, irreverent, quirky with catchy beat and twang. Horn is fabulous. Lyrics are unique; often love story gone bad themed with the girl having left boy and the boy making sense of his fate.

Had my Cake and ate it too

    by Mark K on 7/26/23

This was my 3rd time seeing Cake and they went above and beyond! No new music as of yet, but hearing them live is a next level experience. Really, the albums are great but don't do their energy justice. The Rooftop venue was beautiful and the city really added to the experience. Great weather, great place, great band.

Great show, wish I was closer to win the apple tree,,, The second set was better than the first set according to my son and I don't disagree. This is my second Cake show and I will definitely see them again when they come around. If I receive the federal funding

    Bored out of mind

    by Omar on 7/25/23

Good lord, I was bored out of my mind. My own nostalgia from the 90s betrayed my adult self. They sounded so good and upbeat in the old CDs back in the day, but I was witnessing an energy of a suburban local band comprised of dads who jam out together over the weekend. It's not their fault. We are all older. My expectations were flawed.

    Scenic venue, disappointing sound system

by Frosting not creamy on 7/25/23

Cake fans recognize the lyrical content and quirky musical arrangements in their live show so it is important that the vocals and backing music complement each other through the venue sound system. Pier 17 Is lacking that support . There were times when there was no music and the vocalist bantering with the audience and I had to concentrate to hear him. Positives, the rooftop stage is striking with the surrounding lower Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge. Entering the venue can be cumbersome with multiple escalators to reach rooftop, get to Pier 17 early. We assumed there would be an opening act but were disappointed that Cake was snarky about starting the show on time without an opening act and no notification that there would not be an opening act. I felt as if I was cheated out 25 minutes of live music. I was excited prior to the show but exited disappointed.
