Butler Bulldogs Men's Basketball History
The Butler University Bulldogs men’s basketball team played their first season in 1896 and competed in various mid-major conferences such as the Missouri Valley Conference and the Horizon League before joining the Big East in 2013. Along with seven conference tournament championships between 1997 and 2011, the Indianapolis-based program has appeared in 16 NCAA tournaments with the Bulldogs making it to the Sweet Sixteen on their first go in 1962.
The team returned to prominence in the mid-’90s under head coach Barry Collier, who guided the Bulldogs to their second NCAA tournament berth in 1997. Coach Brad Stevens led the Bulldogs to five consecutive March Madness appearances between 2007 and 2011, including the team’s historic back-to-back advancements to the National Championship game. The Bulldogs have made it to “The Big Dance” five times since, in 2013 and every year between 2015 to 2018. Currently, Thad Matta is the coach of the Bulldogs.
Butler has served as the home court for two members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: Harlan Page, the team’s head coach of six years starting in 1920, and Tony Hinkle, Page’s successor who coached Butler from 1926 to 1942 and 1945 to 1970. Notable alumni players include NBA All-Star Gordon Hayward, Kelan Martin and Shelvin Mack.

Butler Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse
Hinkle Fieldhouse, the home court of the Butler Bulldogs in Indianapolis, has earned its nickname as “Indiana's Basketball Cathedral” with its lengthy history and distinction as one of the few sports venues in the US to be designated a National Historic Landmark. It also famously is the backdrop to the championship basketball game in the movie “Hoosiers.” Opening in 1928 as Butler Fieldhouse, the facility was the country’s largest basketball arena until 1950. It was renamed in 1966 after the Bulldogs’ head coach Tony Hinkle. While Butler was a member of the Horizon League, Hinkle Fieldhouse hosted several conference tournaments, including the Bulldogs’ championship win in 2010. In 2021, the arena held several semifinal matches in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
The Butler Bulldogs’ 2023–24 regular season kicks off in November at home as the Bulldogs face off against Eastern Michigan. The Bulldogs play their final game of the regular season at home against Big East competitors Xavier. Here’s a list of key games to keep an eye on:

Awesome atmosphere to watch a college basketball game.
Wanted to see Hinkle Fieldhouse. Love Indiana high school basketball, but had never been to Hinkle. Now that Ive been there, would probably not return. Place needs replaced!
Bought tickets for my grandson for Christmas. He is eight and says he is going to Butler. He had a great time and is positive he is going to Butler. Grandpa, Dad, sister and he went. All had a good time.
I went to the game with my daughter who is a student at Butler. I had heard about Hinkle Fieldhouse for years, and finally had the opportunity to go. I travelled all the way from California for the game, and I wasn't disappointed! The arena is amazing. I loved looking at all the memorabilia before the game, and going onto the court afterwards. Our seats weren't great, but it didn't matter. The game was fun, exciting, and everything I hoped it would be. I loved the Butler band!
We love seeing the Bulldogs play at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The team is excellent and the games are always exciting. We can't wait to go back.
I took my little brother and he had a blast. I plan on taking him again.
Met up with some old college friends for the holidays. We took the kids and had a good time. I only wish Matt Howard would have had a better game! Still the TEAM was great!
Excellent game, good seats. Just wish Valpo had made it more of a game by scoring more in the first half. Then they wouldn't have had to foul as much at the end of the game and it would have been much much closer.
Great game. Poor seating options. will use box office in the future
Pretty cool historic facility. Mens bathrooms upstairs are ridiculous.
Butler's overtime game with Evansville was very exciting. It was too bad that BU couldn't come up with the win.
Game was good. Wish BU would have pulled it out. Restrooms and concessions have a lot to be desired.
The game was awesome!! Despite Ball State being dominated, I enjoyed the historic atmosphere in Hinkle Fieldhouse! Great price for the experience!!
Out standing game and what a field house. This is a great place to see a game more people should be attending.
