Butler Bulldogs Men's Basketball History

The Butler University Bulldogs men’s basketball team played their first season in 1896 and competed in various mid-major conferences such as the Missouri Valley Conference and the Horizon League before joining the Big East in 2013. Along with seven conference tournament championships between 1997 and 2011, the Indianapolis-based program has appeared in 16 NCAA tournaments with the Bulldogs making it to the Sweet Sixteen on their first go in 1962.

The team returned to prominence in the mid-’90s under head coach Barry Collier, who guided the Bulldogs to their second NCAA tournament berth in 1997. Coach Brad Stevens led the Bulldogs to five consecutive March Madness appearances between 2007 and 2011, including the team’s historic back-to-back advancements to the National Championship game. The Bulldogs have made it to “The Big Dance” five times since, in 2013 and every year between 2015 to 2018. Currently, Thad Matta is the coach of the Bulldogs.

Butler has served as the home court for two members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: Harlan Page, the team’s head coach of six years starting in 1920, and Tony Hinkle, Page’s successor who coached Butler from 1926 to 1942 and 1945 to 1970. Notable alumni players include NBA All-Star Gordon Hayward, Kelan Martin and Shelvin Mack.

Butler Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse

Hinkle Fieldhouse, the home court of the Butler Bulldogs in Indianapolis, has earned its nickname as “Indiana's Basketball Cathedral” with its lengthy history and distinction as one of the few sports venues in the US to be designated a National Historic Landmark. It also famously is the backdrop to the championship basketball game in the movie “Hoosiers.” Opening in 1928 as Butler Fieldhouse, the facility was the country’s largest basketball arena until 1950. It was renamed in 1966 after the Bulldogs’ head coach Tony Hinkle. While Butler was a member of the Horizon League, Hinkle Fieldhouse hosted several conference tournaments, including the Bulldogs’ championship win in 2010. In 2021, the arena held several semifinal matches in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

A trip to Hinkle is a must do for anyone in the Indy area. Very easy to get in and out of seats. It is curious how more modern stadiums haven't figured this out. The history/legacy at Butler is very cool to experience. Good time had by all.

by fortwaynefan on 2/6/12Hinkle Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

It is always a good experience watching events (especially Butler men's basketball) at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on the beautiful campus of Butler University! It was a sellout crowd and Super Bowl weekend in Indianapolis.

Hard-fought game in the best basketball atmosphere there is. Could see well even from the upper levels, and seating was comfortable (though the lower level seats with backs are better).

Seats were great, but it was luck.

    by BULLDOGFAN3000 on 1/17/12Hinkle Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

Our seats did not exist, so they moved us courtside. Awesome seats, but it was luck that we ended up there.

Great place to watch a basketball game.

    by ButlerFan1 on 1/2/12Hinkle Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

First time to visit Hinkle Fieldhouse. If you have not been there, I would highly recommend it. There is alot of history to be viewed at the fieldhouse, from past trophies won through the years, to memorabalia displaying the movie "Hoosiers". I don't believe there is a bad seat in the house. It is to my understanding that there is a 5 million dollar renovation to be done to the facility some time in the near future, so you may want to get there to watch the Bulldogs play before the renovation. Just a really nostalgic type of venue to take in, but a really good place to watch a game.

The enviroment inside Hinkle Fieldhouse is amazing. There is alot of history in this building. Our seats were great. Everyone who works there is really nice and kind. Before and after the game we got to meet Blue 2 and got pictures with him. I would recommend anyone who wants to enjoy going to a game at Hinkle to go.

Great game - seats were as ordered.

    by 2BabyBoomers on 12/6/11Hinkle Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

Valpo vs. Butler was a great game. My only concern was about accessibility to and inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. We arrived at the fieldhouse 1 hour early and luckily got the last disabled parking place available. My 88-year old father had difficulty climbing the concrete ramps with his walker (he did not want to sit in disabled seating!). Butler is right on in figuring how to remodel the inside of the fieldhouse. Please include elevators and accessibility issues even beyond the legal guidelines -- Hinkle has great history for many who still want to attend.

    Hinkle is unique

by Anonymous on 11/22/11Hinkle Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

The arena has a small feel but when sold out has good acoustics; makes for a loud exciting atmosphere to watch a good basketball game. True basketball fans need to check this place of their bucket list.

    Butler vs. Louisville Men's Basketball

by Cincinnatus on 11/21/11Hinkle Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

The first half of the game was very competitive. Louisville's athleticism and speed took over in the second half. Overall it was an enjoyable game to watch. I am a really big fan of Ticketmaster's interactive seat selection maps. It's a great way to select the seats you want from those available.
