The show was flat out remarkable; venue was incredible, the Fox has been redone and is a stunning, opera house style theater with wonderful amenities and accoustics. Stills, Young and Furay barely missed a beat after 44 years apart...Stills is lean and fit, and his guitar playing was sterling as usual-covering all the notes and fills while Neil showed off in fine form on top of the sound. The boys were cheerful and chatty, and even Neil was charming and bantering with the crowd and the guys, which made the experience even more special, and surprising.
Furay was truly incredible; voice still sweet and covering the high notes effortlessly and nailing these ancient and difficult ballads with grace and a grown up sensibility the songs may have lacked back when the earth was still cooling in the mid 60's...Stills voice was a tiny bit ragged at times, but with his soul and command, it doesn't really matter...Neil blew the building up-Mr. Soul was out of control-full of blistering guitar chords and pounding away on "old black", and after almost 50 years of wishing, I finally got to hear the song the way it must have sounded at the Whiskey a Go Go or Ciro's in Los Angeles in 1967....
The Springfield opened with "On the way home" which still carried those beautiful harmonies from Stills and Furay, (woo woo woo hoo etc.) and felt perfect as an opener-a symetrical sort of full circle journey kind of song that Neil had originally left to the band as his good bye gift all those years ago...Rock and Roll Woman, Bluebird, Go and Say Goodbye were wonderful, and Stills even tossed in nuggets like "everybody's wrong" "hot dusty roads" which surprised everybody....bottom line, if you can see this band, do it, don' t miss it. Once in a lifetime deal if you are a fan of these guys...
