    Buffalo Springfield still has it.

by Raideen on 6/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Went to the first show of the Buffalo Springfield reunion in Oakland and it was great. Richie, Stephen & Neil were all in fine form. Stephen voice has gotten a little grittier over the years but sounds good. Neil...well he still has that unique voice. Richie was very impressive and his voice is as good as ever. They played everything you would expect them to play and closed the show with Neil's "Keep On Rockin' In The Free World" The sounds was great! I went to see the Cars there a couple of weeks ago and the sound was horrible but tonight's sound was crystal clear. I could hear Richie's acoustic even while Stephen & Neil were rocking on electric. They're only doing a few shows but if you're a fan, catch them if you can.

Great band, great songs, dull sound

    by DubbaD2 on 6/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I wish whoever had done the sound for Gillian Welch had been on the boards for Buffalo Springfield as well. If someone can mic and separate the sound of two acoustic guitars and voices as well as was done for the opening act, surely someone can mic three guitar amps and voices and keep the sound from getting muddy. I'm a guitar player and the friend I went to the show with is a sound board wizard. We were both disappointed in the overall sound of the band. No separation of guitars, no clarity or presence on the voices. Drums were fine and bass was just sorta there, but that's the way BF did bass back in the day. Their act was more about the guitars and voices.

It was a joy to see this band together! I've enjoyed their other work over the last 4 decades but always wanted to see them together as Buffalo Springfield. Neil and Richie seemed particularly thrilled to be playing together. Steve needed some coaxing from Neil to show some emotion but finally got some energy going.

    Buffalo Springfield Amazed

by agroman on 6/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I have been waiting since 1967 to see them! It was one of musical disappointments of my life when they originally broke up before I had a chance to attend one of their concerts. I came to this show with mixed feelings about what would unfold. Would it just be a sloppy nostalgia tour? What transpired was a passionate, focused telling of their greatest songs and a few forgettable ones, all played well. To see Steve Stills and Neil Young trade blows on songs such as Bluebird and Mister soul was worth the admission. Neil Young seemed comfortable as a team member rather than front man and Ritchie Furay came through with excellent Vocals and vibe. The fact that they chose to play Broken Arrow was brave. They Nailed it!

The Fox Rocked with Buffalo Springfield

    by Love3 on 6/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Buffalo Springfield delivered last night. Stills, Furay & Young were definitely into it and so was the crowd. There were highlights throughout the evening; however, they tore the place up on "Mr. Soul." Stills & Young stood toe-to-toe trading guitar licks. At the end, the crowd erupted. When things quieted, a smiling Young asked, "What year is it?" At another point between songs, Young mused, "Rosemary Woods could handle a 17-minute gap. I wonder how she'd do with a 44-year gap?" Furay threw in, "Forty-four years ... that's how long I've been married." The band then broke into, "Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It." Richie Furay's voice was great. Young's was good. Stills's was a bit gravelly but adequate. They were joined onstage by CS&N drummer Joe Vitale and Rick Rosas, a longtime player with Young, on bass. The quintet opened with "On The Way Home," immediately followed with "Rock & Roll Woman," and then proceeded to play just about everything. I looked for the complete set list online but could not find it. The crowd was electric the whole night. After a long ovation, the boys came back and played a three-song encore consisting of "Broken Arrow," "For What It's Worth," and Young's "Keep On Rocking in the Free World." The rousing closer featured more joyful trading of guitar licks between Stills and Young.

    too short

by Fatmanrocks on 6/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

For over $200 a ticket you at least need to put in 2 hours in my opinion. As much as I love Neil I could of passed on this one...I saw what I needed to see of these guys at Bridge School.

    Buffalo Springfield - from 1966!

by dubedude on 6/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

These guys still have it. I'm so appreciative that they decided to share this wonderful music again. My only disappointment is that they didn't add 'Expecting to Fly' in the setlist.

A Cool Blast from the Past

    by JohnnyBoy1130 on 6/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I caught both shows at the Fox in Oakland and all I can say is what an amazing performance! Neil and Richie were clearly having lots of fun while Stills, though appearing a bit more aloof, was also in the groove throughout. The song choices, which span the breadth of their short but illustrious existence as 60's rockers, were nicely ordered with the bigger hits spaced between the more obscure songs and then capped off by an amazing encore. I particularly liked the way the band reinterpreted some of their classics such as "Bluebird" which allowed for free flowing jams to occur intermittently. Richie Furay's voice is still strong and Neil always carries the day. Although the focus, appropriately so, is on Richie, Stephen and Neil, the bassist Rick Rosas and CSN drummer Joe Vitale were outstanding and kept the beat going strongly throughout. Overall, a great "once in a lifetime" experience that is not to be missed!

Buffalo Springfield Needs To Tour More!

by TahoeMichael on 6/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Having grown up with Neil Young, literally, I was old enough to know and appreciate Buffalo Springfield, but too young to ever see them perform. My formative years were spent watching Neil’s solo career blossom in addition to seeing CSNY on many an occasion. When I found out that the surviving members of Buffalo Springfield were going to hit the road, I had to be there. So last night, I make the pilgrimage to the Bay Area for the opening night of their 6 show stint in California. The Fox Theater is a great venue. There’s not a bad seat in the house. Having a 5th row seat doesn’t hurt either. I saw Neil’s shows at this venue last year, so I knew where to go, where to park, and what to expect. Gillian Welch was the opening act. I knew that I was in for good times as her music held my attention with every note. She is a great musician, and whoever selected her to open for Buffalo Springfield is a true genius. (Probably Neil). Gillian Welch was so good that I was disappointed when her set was over. But the anticipation of what to expect going forward was compelling. Around 9:15, the lights dimmed, and our man walked out onto the stage with Stephen Stills, Rick (the bass player) Rosas, Richie Furay, and Joe Vitale. Stephen Stills looked great. He’s lost a lot of weight, and he just had his act together. Neil was wearing a vintage leather jacket with fringes hanging off it, Buffalo Springfield era. The crowd was on our feet, and for good reason. The opening notes, and right into it with On The Way Home! This is where things got really interesting and exciting. As a long standing fan of Neil’s, I was thinking he would be singing On The Way Home. To the contrary, Richie Furay did. If you have Buffalo Springfield’s 3 albums, which I would recommend all three, you would know that Neil wasn’t singing this song. Richie Furay was. The band was concerned about Neil’s vocals back then, so Richie Furay would from time to time sing for Neil on Neil’s songs. The entire set was phenomenal, but so were Richie Furay, Neil, and Stephen Stills! Richie Furay impressed me the most. He was just on target, and seemed to be holding the entire show together with his vocals and rythm guitar. Throghout the entire gig, I was waiting for Neil to breakout. It never happened. That’s what made this show incredible. I saw a side of Neil Young in concert I had never seen before. He wasn’t acting as a solo artist. He was part of a band of equals. As much as I wanted Neil to break away from the band and get into one of those incredbile Neil solos, he didn’t do it. This made the performance all the better. The coordination of their music was just impeccable. The selections were great. There was a song Richie Furay did after Clancey that I had never heard before, but aside from it, all the tunes were old Buffalo Springfield until the very end, Rockin’ In The Free World. Broken Arrow was stunning, as was A Child’s Claim to Fame, Rock n Roll Woman, and Burned. There were so many great tunes that I have never heard done live, and they were done right by Buffalo Springfield. The crowd was a little foreign to me. I didn’t see anyone I knew, but that was OK. I wasn’t there to socialize, only to take it all in. My greatest regret was not having a ticket for this evening’s show. Had I known how good Buffalo Springfield were going to be, I would have gone both nights. My advice to anyone who has an interest in their music – do what it takes to see them perform. This is a side of Neil Young you have never seen before, and you may not see again.

    Buffalo Springfield, June 1, 2011

Just a wave of nostalgia sweep thru the entire audience during every song. Even the younger folks at the show realizes the impact these guys had on music of the last 40 years! This is timeless music to be enjoyed by all ages.
