by Osos1329 on 3/29/18Town Hall - New YorkAs usual the show was very well arranged and presented. Mr. Siegal obviously invests time and effort in contextualizing the presentation. That is educational and appreciated.
Rating: 2 out of 5 Far From Vintage
by JamesDP1 on 3/31/16Town Hall - New YorkAs for the Broadway by the Year:1950 concert...disappointing. Why is it whenever you go to these type of events, the director and cast always choose the most eclectic and lesser known numbers instead of including the major songs and shows? With a choice of musicals like Camelot, Bells Are Ringing, Guys and Dolls, and Pajama Game (not one tune from those hits), they instead pick songs from Mr. Wonderful, The Golden Apple, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn? Only one song apiece from My Fair Lady, King and I, Kismet, Peter Pan, and Sound of Music. Some good talent (including Karen Akers, Marilyn Maye and current Broadway performers from Something Rotten and An American in Paris) and an underused Lisa Howard, who was in terrific voice and stole the show with her only two numbers. I realize there are time constraints, which is all the more reason to select the best of the best. Concert could have been much better with the material they had to work with. Hoping next show would address these issues.
Rating: 4 out of 5 Broadway nostalgia
by Kevinathome on 2/28/16Town Hall - New YorkA well presented, enjoyable, fast paced review. The performers were excellent and presented the music with a contemporary spin. This series is similar to the 92nd Street Y Lyrics & L. Series

by pattimae2 on 4/3/14Town Hall - New Yorkexcept for a very few exceptions, very disappointing. it was like they went around to every bad cabaret act in town and said to the performers "wanna be in a show?" i truly enjoy most town hall events, but this was pretty dreadful

Rating: 4 out of 5 More unknown shows than known
by 50sFan on 6/13/12Town Hall - New YorkThere were two largely familiar shows covered in this edition of Broadway By The Year and a third that I had seen in London that year. The other shows were completely unknown to me and my two friends. Not that it is a bad thing but in checking the shows opening in 1987 there could have been some others included. However, Scott always manages to pick out the quality songs that deserve to be heard again. I will always maintain my subscription to this series no matter what.
Rating: 3 out of 5 Musical of 1946
by Latinatrix on 2/15/12Town Hall - New YorkHighlights: Tom Wopat, Ben Davis, Marilyn Maye, Jessica Mueller, and Dameka Hayes. Although the variety and narration were fine, there should have been a song list with the Playbill. Also, the pianist made some mistakes, Alice Ripley was flat and too loud, and the dancing was not of Broadway quality. I drove 340 miles and stayed in Staten Island to be at this performance, in other words, I took great pains. If I were not a die-hard Tom Wopat fan who came to hear the tunes from Annie Get Your Gun, I would not have come. On that score, Tom was given his due in terms of "voice time", so I was pleased. Jessica was outstanding, and should have sung with Tom on "(They Say That) Falling in Love is Wonderful". Alice Ripley was a disappointment. Lucky I now know of Jessica M.and Dameka H. Plus it's easy to see why Johnny Carson favored the great Marilyn Maye. A true pro.
