About

Bright Eyes is the musical project of singer-songwriter Conor Oberst--an Omaha native who many have dubbed "rock's boy genius." And when one considers his prolific musical output; the ease at which he writes complex, poetic lyrics that accurately sum up many facets of the American experience; that he has been recording music since 13 and, by 24, has recorded over a dozen albums (not to mention a few EPs) and mans his own enormously successful indie record label, Saddle Creek--they may just be right. Oberst, with his trembling voice and fragile appearance, looks every bit the passionate, sensitive artist reluctantly thrust into the spotlight--something which undoubtedly lends to his massive appeal. In 1998, Bright Eyes released two albums, A Collection of Songs written and recorded between 1995-1997 and Letting Off the Happiness. Every Day and Every Night, an EP, was released in 1999 followed by Fevers and Mirrors in 2001 and then Oh Holy Fools in 2002. After taking a break to record an album for another project, Desparacidos, Bright Eyes released the much acclaimed Lifted or The Story is in the Soil. Keep Your Ear to the Ground in 2002. Several EPs were recorded and released in 2004, as well as two full length albums released on the same day--the folk/country influenced I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning featuring guest vocals by Emmylou Harris and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, a pop-electronic album featuring a full-band and "bigger" production than the former. The albums hit Billboard's Top Independent Charts at spots 2 and 3, respectively. Many of Oberst's works have been hailed as veritable masterpieces and several critics (as well as a legion of fans) already consider him to hold a place among the great American songwriters.

I'd recommend seeing Bright Eyes. We ended up driving an hour or two to go, but it was totally worth it. Conor Oberst is amazing and the show was unforgettable.

Paying $2 for a wristband to drink is a crime!

by YoshiDawg on 3/7/11Asheville Civic Center - Asheville

Bright Eyes did all they could. They played a great show. The sound was a bit too loud and muffled. There was a $2 charge to get a wristband to drink. To think about drinking you had to pay $2. This seems like a crime!

    Bright Eyes Kicked Ass

by HebrewJon on 3/7/11Asheville Civic Center - Asheville

I LOVED the concert. I have only two remarks that are negative: 1) The music was often too loud that it overpowered Conor's voice and you couldn't make out what was being sung. The guitars were turned entirely way too loud. The music level should be comfortable and of quality not just of loudness. No sense in paying for stuff you can't hear because you want to rock someone's face off literally. 2) He only played one song from Cassadaga, which is okay, but I wanted to hear more. He did a lot from Lifted though and that made up for it.

This concert was really amazing. Conor was interactive and on top form. The sound quality was amazing. Great musicians all round. The lighting effects were very powerful and the backdrops that were created cool and fresh. Loved the shirt he was wearing wish i knew what brand it was?

    Conor never disappoints!

by Hezza on 3/7/11Asheville Civic Center - Asheville

The Bright Eyes show at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium that took place on Saturday, 3/5 was AMAZING! They played such a great variety of music from all albums, old and new. I loved every moment! Conor is a phenomenal performer, who so appreciates his audience. There were a number of times when he would say, "Thank you SO much!" I'm ready for the next Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes/Monsters of Folk show!

    Bright Eyes was Disappointing

by johnpanda on 3/7/11Asheville Civic Center - Asheville

The concert seemed too overly produced, overly staged, and Bright Eyes did very few songs for which they are well known. Had I not been a fan already, this concert would not have made me one. Oberst didn't even seem "into" it. Everything about the concert seemed stilted, staged, and un-Bright Eyes. I think the concert was mainly too sell the new album, "The People's Key". Maybe Conor had little control over it; bet his recording co. did. But I find that a bit hard to believe.

    Best Bright Eyes yet!

by Clemsonholt on 3/7/11Asheville Civic Center - Asheville

Despite the blowing rain, Asheville was an excellent place to experience the latest incarnation of Bright Eyes. And, man, did Conor and the band deliver!!! Such a fine mix of new and old tunes, along with some really neat lighting effects! We were so delighted with the entire evening! Nate Walcott's horn was amazing!
