About

Bright Eyes is the musical project of singer-songwriter Conor Oberst--an Omaha native who many have dubbed "rock's boy genius." And when one considers his prolific musical output; the ease at which he writes complex, poetic lyrics that accurately sum up many facets of the American experience; that he has been recording music since 13 and, by 24, has recorded over a dozen albums (not to mention a few EPs) and mans his own enormously successful indie record label, Saddle Creek--they may just be right. Oberst, with his trembling voice and fragile appearance, looks every bit the passionate, sensitive artist reluctantly thrust into the spotlight--something which undoubtedly lends to his massive appeal. In 1998, Bright Eyes released two albums, A Collection of Songs written and recorded between 1995-1997 and Letting Off the Happiness. Every Day and Every Night, an EP, was released in 1999 followed by Fevers and Mirrors in 2001 and then Oh Holy Fools in 2002. After taking a break to record an album for another project, Desparacidos, Bright Eyes released the much acclaimed Lifted or The Story is in the Soil. Keep Your Ear to the Ground in 2002. Several EPs were recorded and released in 2004, as well as two full length albums released on the same day--the folk/country influenced I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning featuring guest vocals by Emmylou Harris and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, a pop-electronic album featuring a full-band and "bigger" production than the former. The albums hit Billboard's Top Independent Charts at spots 2 and 3, respectively. Many of Oberst's works have been hailed as veritable masterpieces and several critics (as well as a legion of fans) already consider him to hold a place among the great American songwriters.

    is bright eyes an oxymoron?

by brightwho on 3/10/11Radio City Music Hall - New York

first show i ever walked out on. no energy and the lighting was so odd, you couldn't see the band. i should have just stayed at home and watched youtube covers of radiohead. might be better in a smaller venue but no business being at radio city.

Mike Mogis killllllllled it on guitar, awesome horns, played all the greatest old songs, overall an amazing performance. Road to joy was sick. Gold Mine Gutted was the highlight of the show. The Calendar Hung Itself was also ridiculously amazing

    Walked out on this one.

by UnitMonster on 3/10/11Radio City Music Hall - New York

Now I've seen hundreds of concerts over the last 20 years, and have seen more than a dozen at Radio City Music Hall. I've NEVER walked out of a show due to awful sound from the PA. But alas, I walked out of this one about 20 minutes into Bright Eyes' set. It was WAY too loud, and as much as I tried, I could not enjoy the music at all. I even moved up to the very last row of the third balcony, and I still couldn't sit through another song. What were the sound people thinking?!

Late start, bad reverberation, nice lights

by Poodler on 3/10/11Radio City Music Hall - New York

Would that Bright Eyes concerts were scheduled weekends only. The band came out at 10pm after two warm up acts. Having waited two hours to hear the band we had to leave at 10:40 if we were to catch a train home at a decent hour, this being a "school" night (we both work). The band's performance was okay. Their selection of songs was nicely varied to showcase their new album and career. But the acoustics at Radio City were expectedly bad. Abysmal, really. All the warmth of an echo sound in a grain elevator. Or mine shaft. The band's lightshow was, however, rather enjoyable.

One of the best shows I have ever seen

by Anonymous on 3/9/11Asheville Civic Center - Asheville

This was the fifth time I've seen Bright Eyes and every time was better than the previous time. This show followed that trend and blew the previous ones out of the water. The setlist was near perfection with at least one tune from every album, including many fan favorites during their 2 hour+ set. Cursive as the opening band was incredible as well with a 45 min set that showcased their vast catalog.

Best show ever by bright eyes! I don't like leaving the show to get another beer! Would love a bar inside the venue, worst thing about civic center events! Love orange peel of tabernacle morefor this reason. Staff was friendly and I thought the sound was good. I am a major bright eyes fan and they blew it away!

    Absolutely Amazing!!!

by Anonymous on 3/8/11The National - Richmond

I have been a fan of bright eyes for 5 years now and have been waiting for them to go on tour the whole time.... With all of Conor's new projects i thought bright eyes was over and I had missed my chance. When i heard on the radio they were coming so close to home i almost drove off the road! I bought the tickets the day they went on sale and was so glad i did. The show was unforgettable. Conor Oberst has an incredible stage presence. He didn't play the songs exactly as they are on the albums, instead he would alter the lyrics and timing slightly which gave it a personal touch. I thought this was great because it showed that he was in the moment and not on autopilot. It felt like i was part of the show and he was literally singing to us rather than for us. He played an equal amount of his new stuff and old stuff. And did almost all of my favorites. I am so glad I finally got to see them live. If you're a fan, go to their show, you'll regret it if you don't.

    Bright Eyes :)

    by ninsgirl98 on 3/8/11The National - Richmond

The National was not my idea of the perfect concert venue but Cursive and Bright Eyes certainly brought the small hall to life. Cursive opened to an almost full room but Bright Eyes brought in the crowds. Loved the surges to the front. Conor was in his element, even continuing to sing after a fall. Loved it all!

The show was amazing -- absolutely worth the 5 hour drive from PA to VA! Conor was very energetic and moved around the stage a lot. He stood at the edge of the stage and touched hands with people in the front row. The band was just all together phenomenal!

AMAZING show, can't wait until next time!

by Chelsss on 3/8/11The National - Richmond

This was my first time seeing Bright Eyes live, and it definitely will not be my last. The energy and emotion that Conor showed on stage really eliminated that barrier between the fans and the artist, and I loved that they played some older songs and not just stuff from the new album. Definitely one of the best live shows I have ever been to.

Very good show! I was happy to hear songs from the whole time span of Bright Eyes. I hope this isn't their final tour although I know Conor will continue to make music with his other projects.
