About

11x Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and musician Brandy Clark's new song, "Northwest," is out now.

Of the song, Clark shares, "Being born and raised in western Washington, it was all I knew until I moved to Nashville in my early 20s. It was so right in front of me that I didn't even see or feel just how awesome it all was. The first time I came home for a visit, I realized just how tall the trees were and how majestic the mountains in my childhood backyard would always be. This song is an homage to that beautiful place and time I grew up in."

"Northwest" is the third song unveiled from Clark's highly-anticipated new self-titled album, which was produced by 9x Grammy-winner Brandi Carlile and was released May 19, 2023 on Warner Records. Ahead of the release, Clark recently unveiled album tracks "She Smoked In The House" and "Buried," of which Billboard praises, "Clark continues to convey her inexorable talents as both a song-crafter and vocal interpreter," while Music Row declares, "a stunning ballad of ache and loss by one of our greatest living country songwriters."

The release adds to yet another landmark year for Clark, who is nominated for Best Original Score at the 76th Annual Tony Awards for Shucked, the new musical comedy she composed alongside longtime collaborator, Shane McAnally. Shucked is nominated for nine awards overall at the 2023 ceremony including Best New Musical.

Recorded at the famed Shangri-La studio in Malibu, CA, the new album features the most raw and intimate recordings of Clark's decade-long career, as she showcases her versatility across eleven songs that span the emotional spectrum. In addition to Clark and Carlile, the album also includes special guests Derek Trucks and Lucius as well as Matt Chamberlain on drums, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, Dave Palmer on piano, Jedd Hughes on guitar, Kyleen King on viola, Josh Neumann on cello, Sista Strings (aka Monique and Chauntee Ross) on cello and violin, Steve Fishell on pedal steel and Jay Carlile on background vocals and harmonica.

Reflecting on the project, Clark shares, "This album is a return home to me in many ways. Musically it's the rawest I've been since 12 Stories and maybe even rawer. When Brandi and I sat down and talked about working together, one thing that really intrigued me was her saying 'I see it as your return to the northwest.' (Since the two of us are both from Washington state). That comment inspired so much for me. It took me back to where and how I grew up. 'Northwest' and 'She Smoked In The House' were both a result of that early conversation. Working with another recording artist on this project was such a gift that I didn't even know I needed and changed the way I want to write songs and make records moving forward. My hope is that anyone who hears this album will feel the heart that I put into every note of it."

Carlile adds, "Brandy is one of the greatest songwriters I've ever known. And I feel like I now know exactly who Brandy Clark is through the portal of this singular brilliantly written album. When I heard the songs for this album, they took me back to the first time I heard Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. I was thinking about Tom Petty, The Pretenders, Kim Richey, Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne and the soul of 90s Americana before it had a name. Brandy's voice is like a friend you've had your whole life the second you hear it. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way. This is her moment. This is the one. Sometimes an artist only gets one shot at an album like this in their life. This is the time Brandy has chosen to reveal herself to the world as an artist and a woman and I was blessed beyond measure to be the person she trusted to support and facilitate that swan dive."

Clark is one of her generation's most respected songwriters and musicians. In addition to writing songs like "A Beautiful Noise," the GRAMMY-nominated duet performed by Brandi Carlile and Alicia Keys, and Kacey Musgraves' "Follow Your Arrow," Clark has released three acclaimed albums of her own including 2020's Your Life is A Record. The album landed on best-of-the-year lists at Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Variety and more and led NPR Music to call her, "a storyteller of the highest caliber," The New Yorker to declare, "No one is writing better country songs than Brandy Clark is" and Slate to proclaim, "one of the greatest living short-story-song writers in country (which really means in any genre)."

First time seeing Brandy Clark and she was excellent,

by Jane on 11/13/21Birchmere - Alexandria

Also first time to the Birchmere venue. I will say it is a little hard if you are facing away from the stage and the tables were a bit close for turning chairs but once Brandy and her band started the performance, all that was forgotten. They took us a musical journey, made us laugh, cry, sing along and feel inspired. The only band part was it just went by to fast. This was our first Brandy concert but it will not be the last. Oh and did I mention that her band was awesome. Great music and instrumentation. Plus the harmonies were spot on.

    Brandy Clark was unbelievable!

by Leslie0329 on 4/10/1720th Century Theater - Cincinnati

The 20th Century Theater was the perfect place to hear Brandy Clark. It was small and intimate. Brandy Clark put on an amazing show. It was just her with a guitar and two backup guys. She did all of her great songs. I can't wait to see her again.

Small crowd but I cannot get enough of Brandy Clark. She has such a great voice and poignant lyrics. Can't wait to see her in concert again. I'll track her down later in the summer to catch her at a different venue.

by JimReeves on 11/13/16Birchmere - Alexandria

Brandy Clark is a "must see" , whether you are a country music fan or not. Especially, if you get to see her in in an intimate venue like the Birchmere. Brandy Clark is the quintessential country singer/songwriter. Take the time to listen to a few of her song/stories and spend a Big Day in a Small Town.

Would love to see a longer set.

by MaineDBTFAn on 7/24/16Bank of NH Pavilion - Gilford

I saw Brandy Clark open for Chris Stapleton at the Bank of NH Pavilion in Gilford, NH. I was not really familiar with her work, but listened a bit on Amazon Prime prior to going to the show. She was outstanding - clear voice, great lyrics, and an excellent band. "Storyteller" type lyrics - if you like folks like Justin Townes Earle, Jamey Johnson, and Jason Isbell, I suspect you would like Ms. Clark. I would love to see her play a longer headlining set at a smaller venue - hope your reading this Port City Music Hall or State Theater in Portland, Maine, or Hampton Beach Casino Ballrooom. It is hard to compare an opening act to a headliner, but not sure I would pay to see Chris Stapleton again - great talent, but the show wasn't my cup of tea, but will be looking for Brandy Clark back in this region.

What a fun night of music. She's an intriguingly clever lyricist. The band rocked. Her songs are better in person than they are on her records.

    Great concert

by SueinMemphisTN on 7/10/16Halloran Centre at the Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Brandy Clark was new to me, but she obviously has a strong following. We enjoyed about 85 minutes of non-stop singing, sometime acoustic, most with her band. She tells great stories with her songs, and is very personable. I would recommend her and would go see her again..

    Brandy Clark was amazing !

by Conasta on 7/10/16Halloran Centre at the Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

From song writing to song singing, Brandy Clark is an amazing talent. Don't miss her! The only flaw in this concert was the keyboards being a bit too loud in some places and thus overwhelmed both Brandy's voice and the rest of the band. A bit less key volume ...i.e. - better balance...and it would have been perfect. Great concert though!

    Brandy Clark, today's Patsy Cline

by Imnotme on 5/22/16Birchmere - Alexandria

Brandy Clark is an amazing country singer/songwriter. She has a clear, pure, country voice. She has a wonderful& warm stage presence. Whether accompanied by her talented band or performing solo with her guitar she commands the stage. In my mind, she is today's Patsy Cline!

Dynamic Duo: Brandy Clark w/ Aubrie Sellers

    by Hockey13 on 5/22/16Birchmere - Alexandria

I'd seen Brandy Clark before at a songwriter's round at Tin Pan South and solo at an outdoor Americana Festival (both in Nashville) but it was nice see her at the Birchmere with a band. It was a great set which showcased her personality, clever songwriting and excellent voice. I'd seen Aubrie Sellers once before opening for Chris Stapleton at his CD Release show in Nashville but great to catch her entire set and a nice surprise to recognize a couple excellent Nashville players in her band...Ethan Ballinger and Cy Winstanley.

    Brandy Rocks!

by Cyberkat on 7/1/15Birchmere - Alexandria

Brandy Clark delivered a terrific experience once again. She is an amazingly insightful songwriter and brings out every nuance in her performances of her songs and those written by others. She is especially adept at illuminating the ways people deal with their troubles. This show she added a delightful touch in bringing our her six-year-old nephew to sing a song. He did well! The band she added this year was quite good. They added highlights to her songs that a soloist cannot offer. The only unfortunate part of the experience was that the sound balance was a little off in the Birchmere--the instruments got too much amplification and the voices too little.

    Brandy Clark at the Birchmire

by Imnotme on 7/1/15Birchmere - Alexandria

Award winning country singer, songwriter, Brandy Clark put on an excellent concert. One of the best concerts I've ever attended. She has wonderful country voice & plays a mean guitar. Her band is excellent, as well. She put on a solid two hour show covering most of the songs on her current album "Twelve Stories” along with a few new songs & covers of a few country & pop classics. She received a standing ovation from the crowd & did an encore (just Brandy with her guitar) of five of her favorite songs. She is a true county music treasure.

    Brandy Clark grabs your heart!

by NCCOAST on 6/1/14Birchmere - Alexandria

Brandy Clark was so much more than expected. She was great in concert. She told stories before the songs and made you feel like she was singing to you! I believe she is going to be around for a long time as a singer songwriter.
