About

11x Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and musician Brandy Clark's new song, "Northwest," is out now.

Of the song, Clark shares, "Being born and raised in western Washington, it was all I knew until I moved to Nashville in my early 20s. It was so right in front of me that I didn't even see or feel just how awesome it all was. The first time I came home for a visit, I realized just how tall the trees were and how majestic the mountains in my childhood backyard would always be. This song is an homage to that beautiful place and time I grew up in."

"Northwest" is the third song unveiled from Clark's highly-anticipated new self-titled album, which was produced by 9x Grammy-winner Brandi Carlile and was released May 19, 2023 on Warner Records. Ahead of the release, Clark recently unveiled album tracks "She Smoked In The House" and "Buried," of which Billboard praises, "Clark continues to convey her inexorable talents as both a song-crafter and vocal interpreter," while Music Row declares, "a stunning ballad of ache and loss by one of our greatest living country songwriters."

The release adds to yet another landmark year for Clark, who is nominated for Best Original Score at the 76th Annual Tony Awards for Shucked, the new musical comedy she composed alongside longtime collaborator, Shane McAnally. Shucked is nominated for nine awards overall at the 2023 ceremony including Best New Musical.

Recorded at the famed Shangri-La studio in Malibu, CA, the new album features the most raw and intimate recordings of Clark's decade-long career, as she showcases her versatility across eleven songs that span the emotional spectrum. In addition to Clark and Carlile, the album also includes special guests Derek Trucks and Lucius as well as Matt Chamberlain on drums, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, Dave Palmer on piano, Jedd Hughes on guitar, Kyleen King on viola, Josh Neumann on cello, Sista Strings (aka Monique and Chauntee Ross) on cello and violin, Steve Fishell on pedal steel and Jay Carlile on background vocals and harmonica.

Reflecting on the project, Clark shares, "This album is a return home to me in many ways. Musically it's the rawest I've been since 12 Stories and maybe even rawer. When Brandi and I sat down and talked about working together, one thing that really intrigued me was her saying 'I see it as your return to the northwest.' (Since the two of us are both from Washington state). That comment inspired so much for me. It took me back to where and how I grew up. 'Northwest' and 'She Smoked In The House' were both a result of that early conversation. Working with another recording artist on this project was such a gift that I didn't even know I needed and changed the way I want to write songs and make records moving forward. My hope is that anyone who hears this album will feel the heart that I put into every note of it."

Carlile adds, "Brandy is one of the greatest songwriters I've ever known. And I feel like I now know exactly who Brandy Clark is through the portal of this singular brilliantly written album. When I heard the songs for this album, they took me back to the first time I heard Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. I was thinking about Tom Petty, The Pretenders, Kim Richey, Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne and the soul of 90s Americana before it had a name. Brandy's voice is like a friend you've had your whole life the second you hear it. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way. This is her moment. This is the one. Sometimes an artist only gets one shot at an album like this in their life. This is the time Brandy has chosen to reveal herself to the world as an artist and a woman and I was blessed beyond measure to be the person she trusted to support and facilitate that swan dive."

Clark is one of her generation's most respected songwriters and musicians. In addition to writing songs like "A Beautiful Noise," the GRAMMY-nominated duet performed by Brandi Carlile and Alicia Keys, and Kacey Musgraves' "Follow Your Arrow," Clark has released three acclaimed albums of her own including 2020's Your Life is A Record. The album landed on best-of-the-year lists at Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Variety and more and led NPR Music to call her, "a storyteller of the highest caliber," The New Yorker to declare, "No one is writing better country songs than Brandy Clark is" and Slate to proclaim, "one of the greatest living short-story-song writers in country (which really means in any genre)."

  • Fantastic!

by BJT on 4/27/24Jefferson Theater - CharlottesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Sista Strings opened with a mesmerizing set. Their talent is off the charts! Brandy Clark’s songwriting is storytelling at its best. She creates images through her lyrics and her voice is so clear that you’re not straining to understand them. I loved her band as well. Their musical talent and supporting harmonies were tasteful and spot on. (Spoiler Alert) Both acts played together near the end of the show and they were having such infectious fun that they left me with a lingering “feel good feeling” for days!

  • What a civilized evening!

Brandy Clark is a beautiful storyteller. Her songwriting surpasses most current artists, and her singing is magical. Her band was exceptional, both vocally and musically. Special kudos to Sistastrings, who opened her show and performed with her.

  • Brandy Clark at Brooklyn Arts Center

by cab on 4/27/24The Brooklyn Arts Center - WilmingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic show. Brandy is such a great composer and artist with a fantastic band. Opening act of Sista Strings was great too. Brandy reached out to a young girl who was singing all her songs in the audience, brought her up and gave her a guitar pick and a hug. Great memory for a young fan who will remember it forever. A great, intimate venue to see a show. The only things I'd say the venue needs is another men's and women's restroom.

  • Great venue and show.

Brandy Clark puts on a great show. Really enjoyed the venue.

  • Did not prefer seating arrangement

by Ebee on 4/26/24The Brooklyn Arts Center - WilmingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Mixed feelings about the sitting arrangement, While very intimate , I felt like it limited crowd interaction somehow. No singing together. No dancing. No smiles, just facing the back of people’s heads. I personally prefer standing room only and I have experienced equal intimacy this way at other small venues. I suppose everyone is different but to me, thats part of what makes a concert, bringing us all together for one thing, to enjoy music.

  • Incredible Talent

by Dog Mama on 4/26/24The Brooklyn Arts Center - WilmingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Brandy Clark is a master story teller and a wonderful vocalist/performer. In spite of her many talents, she seems to be very nice, personable and down to earth. Sista Strings’ set was jaw dropping beautiful. I’ll be sure to see them again. Brandy’s band was great and together, they were a well oiled machine. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to see Brandy and her people.

  • Great show

by Kurtb on 10/27/23Delmar Hall - Saint LouisRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great show. Brandy Clark talked about each song before performing it. It really gave an insight to the song. The sound was excellent and not too loud. Her band was great. Two of her band members opened the show as they were Tattletail Saints. They were very entertaining in their own right. Delmar Hall was a great venue, small and intimate. I highly recommend seing Brandy Clark.

  • Love, love, Brandy Clark

by Kellie D on 10/27/23Delmar Hall - Saint LouisRating: 5 out of 5

She plays a wonderful mix of old and new songs. Talks to the audience, looks at the audience, so no matter the venue it feels intimate. She is the whole package. Singer, song writer, and entertainer. You feel like you just spent the evening with a good friend. I’ve been a huge fan of BC since she opened for Jennifer Nettles and I’ve been following her ever since. Her new songs show vulnerability and courage. Her older records are ones I know all the words and sing along. Her lyrics are mind blowing. Key words in those lyrics that transport you to a range of emotions. I can’t wait to see her new show Shucked. She’s genius talent, and a good person.

  • Best Concert ever

by Oakie on 10/27/23Delmar Hall - Saint LouisRating: 5 out of 5

The small venue made the concert feel intimate. The crowd was enthusiastically great. Brandy was fabulous. Her opening act was a fill in- part of her band. They did a great job. Warmed the crowd up well. From the moment Brandy hit the stage through her curtain call, she was "on"the whole time. She is an unbelievably good songwriter. She talked to the crowd as if she were having a personal conversation with each of us. There was never a lag moment. It was the best concert I have ever been to, and I have been to a lot of them. Mostly it was so good because most concerts are too big. As I was going to this concert, I questioned why I would drive 400 miles for a concert and after felt that the trip was well worth it. Anyone who is not a Brandy Clark fan has never heard her perform. When it was over, I wanted to drive all the way to Nashville to hear her the next night. Unfortunately, I could not. I am looking for another of her concerts that I can attend soon. I purchased all of her albums.

  • Uniquely beautiful voice

by Cindy on 10/27/23Delmar Hall - Saint LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Brandy Clark is an amazing and I feel overlooked talent. She is one of the most unique and gifted singers, musicians and song writers currently in Nashville. She surrounds herself with gifted musicians who compliment her style vocally and instrumentally. Her solo acoustic portion of the concert shows off her guitar talents and emphasize the pure tone of her voice. Overall a great performance!!

I love a small, more intimate venue and Delmar Hall was perfect. Brandy was phenomenal, as we expected. Singer/Songwriters are a special breed. Her songs and her talent make for a wonderful evening and highly recommend her show whether you know her or not.
