Boston Bruins History

Established in 1924, the Boston Bruins were the first American team to join the NHL(Opens in new tab). They won their first of six Stanley Cup championships in just their fifth season in 1929, defeating the defending champions New York Rangers. It was the first Stanley Cup championship to feature two U.S. teams. The Bruins added championships in 1939 and 1941, and between 1943 and 1958 they reached the final five more times.

After the arrival of future Hall of Famers Bobby Orr (a three-time MVP) and Phil Esposito (one of the greatest goal-scorers of all time and the first player to score 100 points in a season), the Bruins won Stanley Cup Championships in 1970 and 1972. The image of Orr flying through the air after scoring "The Goal" in overtime to defeat the St. Louis Blues in 1970 is one of the most memorable in hockey history.

On April 9, 2023, the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3, marking their 63rd win of the season and setting a new NHL record for the most single-season wins. They made history again on April 12 when they reached 133 points scored in a single season thanks to a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals, besting the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens for the NHL team with the most points scored in a single season.

Twenty-nine straight appearances in the Playoffs followed — a record among all professional sports — including Stanley Cup Final appearances in 1974, 1977–1978, 1988, and 1990.

After a two-decade absence, the Bruins returned to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011, defeating the Vancouver Canucks in a thrilling seven-game series behind the goaltending of Tim Thomas. To date, the Bruins have made 20 appearances in the Stanley Cup Final, including most recently in 2019. Legendary players who have worn the Bruins’ jersey include Hall of Famers Cecil "Tiny" Thompson, Eddie Shore, and Aubrey "Dit" Clapper.

  • Wicked good time

    by bergiefan06 on 7/30/09World Trade - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

I had a blast. It was a great crowd with great music. Even had Ben and Jerrys ice cream. I am a bit disappointed that Bruins players were not on this cruise. It would be a great time if they had even a couple of current roster players, or a rookie or two there . All in all, a great time.

  • It was ok

    by BruinsFan91 on 7/29/09Boston Harbor - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

I was very excited to sail on this Bruins Cruise. I was very interested because I have participated in many Boston Bruins Foundation Events, such as the Wives Carnival, and looked forward to having a good time. However, I was very disappointed with this cruise. It was advertised as Bruins players would be on board to "mingle". I couldn't fine one. It shouldn't have been advertised in that manner when indeed there were no current players. The band was okay, just some guy singing to a CD player, drinks were expensive, but it went to Charity and a good cause. It was a nice night out, but it was a very misleading event.

  • Misrepresented Night

by kenannic on 7/27/09Boston Harbor cruise for Bruins Foundation - BostonRating: 1 out of 5

I was so excited to meet Bruins players, alumni, and management (as this was described on the website). There were 3 OLD Bruins players there, very disappointing. I had brought tshirts, a hockey puck, a hat, and a camera hoping to get some autographs and some pictures. I got one autograph... I took public transportation there which ended up costing $48 for the two of us because I thought parking would be pricey. It would have been nice to know AHEAD of time that they were going to give out free parking passes. The event went to a good cause but maybe if they had just stated "Boston harbor cruise for the Bruins Foundation" and left it at that no one would have expected to meet players!

  • Boston Bruins Sunset Cruise...TERRIBLE

    by ica1080 on 7/27/09World Trade - BostonRating: 1 out of 5

My boyfriend is an avid hockey fan. I bought these tickets to surprise him. We are from RI, and last Wednesday began our trek to Boston. (He had no idea what I had in store). I wanted to take the T, figuring it would be easier as far as avoiding traffic in Boston around 4-5 PM, also thinking the T would be cheaper, and we wouldn't have to worry about finding & paying for parking. We finally arrived at our destination at which time I informed him what I had up my sleeve. I had bought all kinds of paraphernalia for the Bruins to sign for him, I bought him 2 pucks, 2 shirts, 2 markers, and had all of this stuffed in my pocketbook. He was beyond excited when I revealed the surprise, and showed him all the stuff I had brought for him to get signed. We boarded the boat, and couldn't believe how many people were already on board. We got 2 drinks, and waited for the players to board. The boat left around 6:30 at which time we went searching on all 3 levels of the boat for the players. He recognized only 3 men. I figured I should ask an employee if they knew how many Bruins were on the boat, the man I asked said 3. So my boyfriend had already spotted the 3 men, and was thoroughly disappointed, as these 3 players retired ages ago. Overall, he got one picture, and one signature. To add insult to injury, I had spent so much money on our transportation to Boston, I was running low on cash, and we didn't have time to eat dinner as we were en route all afternoon. The only food on this boat was hot dogs/popcorn, etc. We figured it was better than nothing, and got in line. We were informed after my boyfriend took out his debit card to pay that they were cash only. So we went around the corner to use the ATM, but the ATM was out of order, So at this time, neither of us had any cash, we couldn't use our cards, we were starving, thirsty, and had already seen the whopping 3 "Bruins" onboard, so needless to say we were not too pleased. As we finally got off of the boat, there were 2 girls standing at the bottom of the ramp handing out parking validations. Had I known this, or had I seen it on the website, I would have driven and not wasted multiple hours and a ton of money on different modes of city transportation. We went back to South Station to catch the train home, and there were other people there waiting who we talked to, who were also thoroughly disgusted with the whole evening. Such false advertising. My boyfriend has been playing hockey since he could walk, has hundreds of medals & trophies from his hockey career, and still plays in various mens' leagues to this day. He has a ton of friends who play professional hockey, just to give you an idea of how huge a fan he is, and also to give you an idea of how disappointed he was. I will NEVER go on this again, as they promised that you would "mix & mingle with the Bruins, past, present, and management", while enjoying drinks....etc. It is all lies....and I hope that other dissatisfied fans write in to complain also. With all of the money these pro athletes make, they can't find 3 hours in their lives for CHARITY and THIER FANS WHO PAY THEIR SALARY to come aboard and "mix & mingle"? I find this absurd and highly disgusting. I would never ask for my money back, as I understand it goes to charity, but I wish I could get that wasted night of my life back ;-/

  • Booze Cruise

    by BigD02536 on 7/24/09World Trade - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

A nice way to cap off a summer evening, a great part with fellow bruins fans..I only wished the ATM had worked on the boat, I would have spent some more on raffle tickets and beer.

  • Waaaay too crowded

by Orbitz on 7/24/09World Trade - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

Glad this was to raise money for the wonderful Pan Mass Charity bike event! However, the experience itself was less than I had anticipated. The ship was so over crowded that you could barely move on the deck- like herding cattle, drinks spilling all over the place, had a slice of dry pizza, too-(that's the only food they had. We saw Sweeney auctioning off items, the dj was pretty good (Jim Plunkett)- but again, there were so many people jammed together- I would have rather just given the $50 dollars (2 tix) to the Pan Mass Fund, skipped the boatride, and enjoyed a nice dinner somewhere. I want my 3 hours back.

  • Booze Cruise for Charity

    by Krista4756 on 7/23/09World Trade - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Jim Plunkett was awesome, the beers were $5 for a can, and there were not current players on the boat - that I could find anyways. It's ok though because it was all for charity!

  • enjoyable evening

    by m10april on 7/23/09World Trade - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Had a wonderful time. The music was great. I enjoyed meeting the Bruins Alumni on the middle deck

  • Fun times!

    by BsFan4Orr on 7/23/09World Trade - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Had a great time! Jim Plunkett kept the crowd singing all night & even met a few Bruins Alumni. I highly recommend this event for next year!

  • Disappointed

by BruinsFan on 7/23/09World Trade - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

Overall the cruise was good. Jim Plunkett was great. However, it was advertised that there would be members of the Bruins on the cruise and that was not so. That was a big disappointment!

  • Bruins sunset harbor cruise a bit lame

by cagedbird on 7/23/09World Trade - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

I wasn't going to mention it, because really, what's the point? However, you've asked, so I'm answering. While we had a great time with our friends listening to music and being out on the water, we could have done so much closer to home with not as much of a let down. When an organization advertises such an event that boasts an evening with "players, alumni, and management", it should be just that. This particular event had only 1 "featured" former player that many of us had never heard of. All the hype about this night led to huge disappointment by not only our small group of hopefuls, but to many, many other passengers as well. It was a benefit for a great cause, but next time, we'll just donate on our own time and party someplace with less hype and not as many broken promises.

  • AMAZING EVENT!!!

by JoeBoston on 7/23/09World Trade - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Amazing fun event for a great cause. Good music, good friends, good weather, and the Boston Bruins, can anyone really ask for more!

  • Jim Plunkett was awesome

by keric on 7/23/09World Trade - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the cruise was great and Jim Plunkett was unbelievable. I was disappointed however, that no current Bruins were on board. It was definitely worth the price of admission and it the money couldn't go to a better cause.

  • Not what I expected.

    by godess31 on 7/23/09World Trade - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

We had a fun night but didn't not see any Bruins players, whether they were not mingling or there was just no one there I would have recognized (I have been watching the Bruins since I was born). The drinks are a bit expensive, I had assumed that food would be served as the cruise was 6-9 pm but it was not, you could buy pizza, hot dogs or snacks. I however enjoyed the cruise, listening to music, having a few drinks and all for a good cause so as long as you know what your getting into, it can be a good night.

  • Best Time ever

I had the best time ever with my Dad, the game was awesome and my seats were perfect.

  • Great game but disappointing in the end

by MARKUS on 7/13/09TD Banknorth Garden - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

The Bruins highlights from previous games were excellent. The balcony seats have the best view of the game. Tim Thomas is the man! Great food, great beer.....memorable evening in Boston! Thanks!

  • Absolutely Electric Event

by mbyrne on 7/13/09TD Banknorth Garden - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This game, to me, was for the ages... and helped to set up one of the most important hockey games in Boston in over a decade. In a must win game, the team, as well as the crowd came through. The only disappointment was that we lost game 7. We had great seats - 5th row in the balcony behind the net. Can't wait for next year. Go B's!

  • Canes Miracle in 7
