    A lot of Boo fun

by TexMama on 10/25/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

This is the first time we attended the event and we brought a very busy 22 month old. Overall, I was very pleased with the event and was actually surprised to see a lot of adults there without children. My son enjoyed it but is still trying to comprehend the 'trick or treat' concept...good thing he was free! Only comment that I have was the Child Safety ID booths...such a great idea but would suggest better lighting for the area so that the pictures come out better. They had to re-do the child in front of us because the picture turned out too dark. Our picture turned out okay but it's a little hazy. We'll definitely attend the event again next year.

Boo at the Zoo for Me and You

by Pumpkineater on 10/25/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

Boo at the Zoo was a lot of fun for my 5 year old. She loved seeing all the different costumes, walking to the candy stations and exploring the animal exhibits at night. We spent a lot of time in the reptile and small mammal houses which was fun but we ran out of time to actually finish "trick or treating" outside. I would recommend getting there as early as possible and visting all of the candy stations first before exploring the rest of the Zoo. The event was crowded but we were able to keep up with our daughter and even though there were tons of children and strollers the atmosphere wasn't chaotic. ( I would however recommend either keeping your group small or making sure you have enough parent supervision so you don't lose sight of your children) Overall, we had a great time, got a variety of treats including healthy alternatives like apples and enjoyed a nice family outing at Boo at the Zoo.

Fun for the kids (could be better for the adults)

by vlsneed on 10/25/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

Boo at the Zoo is very fun for the kids - lots of cool costumes, more booths than in the past and space fairly well, variety of "treats" which is nice, starts at a good hour for the little ones. Zoo strives to be educational as well - which i MUCH appreciate. We try to go every year and our kids look forward to it. Atmosphere issue: crowded and very dark; not sure what you can do but it gets tense for we parents with little ones; maybe a little lighting? MAIN issue: You don't make it easy for the parents (yes, those who actually PAY for the tickets). It is right at dinner time - even if we try to feed the kids before we come, it doesn't really work out; we leave early in case of traffice, etc and then stand in line for quite a while - and there is NO FOOD. This is really an issue for enjoying the evening - the one or two food-oriented booths are mobbed and there is only the little cafe to buy food which is also a bit overwhelmed and there is limited time for kids who want to do the whole run. What happened to the hot dogs? Kids could eat on the go and it would be much more pleasant for us parents. Could there also be a few booths for us parents? Coffee? Anything? PLEASE!!! I realize this is a fundraiser primarily and I fully support that, but its also prime family time and it would be nice if the whole family enjoyed - I'll bet you'd see returns on that.

National Boo at the Zoo Is An Annual "Must-Attend"

by LilyDC8 on 10/25/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

This was our first time at this event with our 12-year old daughter and although she's at the age limit for the event, she said she was so glad we went for she had a WONDERFUL time. The money you spend to attend the event is definitely worth it for many reasons: 1) It's not a lot of money per ticket to help the National Zoo's animals for the experience your family receives!!! 2) The zoo & exhibits are dressed up for the holiday and are great experiences for the kids -- our favorite exhibit was the invertebrates exhibit (spiders to crustaceans); the volunteers were all costumed and knowledgeable about each of the species, as well as excited to be there educating in a fun manner to the visitors rather than in a bothered or unengaged manner. There were fabulous light displays on some of the buildings and walkways, giant blow-up spiders, skeletons in various "ghoulish" activities, cemeteries displaying the names of distinct species (smart and poignant!), scarecrow fields, etc. Overall the effect is fun and entertaining in the most exciting way for both parents/kids. 3) The participating vendors are all very friendly to the families and it's fun to go "trick-or-treating" to their booths for goodies. As parents, our favorite vendors happened to be Whole Foods who handed out yummy apples and Cascadian Farms who handed out granola bars -- they are healthy treats in the midst of all the good chocolate that was handed out too. I'm sure it can be overwhelming to some of the vendors considering the sheer number of attendees but they all handled it pretty darn well given their overall good "customer" service. The only word of advice we'd offer to parents is to make sure you have dinner or a meal before the event start at 5:30 should you not be able to buy a meal at the Zoo's cafe or have time to eat a meal if your kids want to run around the entire time. We saw a lot of hungry parents/children eating the more substantial healthy apples halfway through the event since they didn't eat a meal beforehand or while there @ the cafe. 4) Everyone (parents/kids/vendors/exhibit volunteers) was costumed which made the event so entertaining to see all the creative costumes. 5) We are FONZ members and we received parking passes for the event when we purchased the tickets. Parking was adequate and easily accessible coming in and leaving. It was managed very well.

Not as good as last year

by Mami2010 on 10/25/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

Overall Boo at the Zoo was a fun and safe experience. However, last year the zoo made a big point of demonstrating the main food groups and put a lot of emphasis on health. There were just as many trinkets and toys as candy and a lot of healthy snacks. This year it was just one snickers bar after another! Who wants to wait in a line of 30 people to get a lollipop and how many lollipops does a 3 yr old need anyways! If the zoo hadn't promoted themselves previously as being more health concious I wouldn't expect it but they did. In comparison to last year the lines were longer, the "treats" cheaper and less healthy, and no cool gadgets. Still, more fun than the neighborhood, mostly because of the animals and their keepers.

Also a fun event...althought given that there are so many people at the Zoo and many little kids...I would suggest that the Zoo offer better lighting, or perhaps offer this event during the day so that the visitors have an option between attending the event during the day or evening time.

Excellent event! Well run and fun for all ages. I been many years and the volume of people this year was ideal. I do not know if it was less people than previous years or better format. There was never the large mass a people meeting in the middle which was hard to get through. Highly recommend to everyone!

Boo at the Zoo was an overall BOO!

by Mommauof3 on 10/25/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

This event was extremely expensive for what you receive. It was difficult to see many of the animals and the trick or treating was poor. Lollipops and smarties and things like that are ridiculously cheap. When you spend $130 for 6 people three of which are tiny and can't do a whole lot you expect more. My opinion is that families should receive vouchers for some sort of meal . . .nothing fancy . . .sandwich and chips is fine. Then it should be done earlier so that more animals are out and the nighttime portion isn't as long. There should be many more trick or treating stops with better treats and more games with more interesting prizes. There should have been more than one funnel cake and gelato venue as they were very popular. I have to say that Potbellys though was exactly what we would hope for. It was fun to go ONCE but honestly is just not worth the overall price.

    Ticketmaster charge is too high

by Anonymous on 10/25/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

Boo at the Zoo is exhausting but great fun for the kids...we took 8 year olds this year for the third year in a row and they still love it. But the ticketmaster prices are really just too much...

    Boo At the Zoo

by KPRICE10 on 10/25/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

2nd year! Awesome! They should offer more Saturdays for the month of October. I went on a Friday...very hard to get off work - get kids - and get to the zoo by 530pm. I did not arrive until almost 7pm. Otherwise - it was great!

    Stinker

by Izer on 10/24/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

My family of 5 kids ages 5,8,&10 were very disappointed. 90% of the animals were not available to see and the ones that were if you caught a glimpse they were sleeping. The cost is ridiculous, the "treats" we received didn't amount the 30plus dollars we spent per person to attend. None of the "volunteers" knew anything, where anything was or about any animals. Promised feeding demos were not to be found at the times stated. No maps were provided, you had to buy one. Some stations were hard to find. I hated it and would never recommend this to anyone.

    Boo at the zoo

by mommyo1 on 10/24/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

This event is lots of fun for the kids. They love the novelty of trick or treating in the zoo. There are a variety of treats, many of them healthy. There are even some for the adults. You don't get to see many animals. However, we did see a few like the monkeys and a tiger. The decorations are fun too. It's definitely worth doing.

If anything, I think the event was less fun than standard trick or treating, but we had to pay for it.
