Boo at the Zoo not health friendly

by altmuzik on 10/24/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

Unfortunately the only healthy tasty dining option at the zoo, Rocklands Grill, is closed during Boo at the Zoo. So you rush to get your kid from day care to the Zoo, and there is no good food to be had. Only candy, one stand with apples, and the pits of the dining world, the Mane Restaurant. I have no idea how they manage to make a Boca Burger even less appealing than normal, but they are able to do so. Steaming? Warmed under warm tap water? Warmed in someone's shoes?

Weather was great and it was not over crowded. We have gone the last three years and it rained on us each time and was still very crowded. This year was perfect.

    Boo and the Zoo

by momto2kidswoohoo on 10/24/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

Crowded around entrances but thinned out as you walked away from points of entry. Some families stood in line at vendor tents while others let their kids cut to the front... not sure what was expected. Not very stroller friendly (hard for kids in strollers to reach the vendors). Vendors packed up to leave about 15-30min before the end time. A good mix of candy and healthy snacks. Not as many zoo exhibits this year. My kids love the decorations but they were the same as last year (not that they remember). The cost is more than what the event is worth. I'd like to pay $10/person.

Great event this year but we so missed the walk through tiger. My kids were devastated! Please bring him back next year!

Boo at the Zoo is always fun!

by Debmom on 10/24/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

This is a great, safe way to take the kids tric or treating and to benefit the National Zoo at the same time. IT's thoughtful and fun, and not too scary for the little ones

Boo at the Zoo: A Must Each Year

by Mazycat on 10/24/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

I have taken my sister and her two children for the past 8 years, and each Halloween it gets better and better! No matter the weather (and we have endure rain, cold, and even heat), we leave with smiles on our faces and bags full of goodies. And, even though we are exhausted, tradition always prevails. The first thing we do when we get home is dump the treats and begin sorting. Our antipication for the next year begins as soon as we close hit the bed and close our eyes. I tell everyone it is a MUST!

Boo Zoo is lots of fun!

by Anonymous on 10/24/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

We went to the Boo at the Zoo Friday and it was really fun. The zoo had lots of skeletons and spiders and so forth scenes set up all around the zoo. Since it was an event for children of all ages the scenes were not scary but for adults some of them were really detailed and very cool. Our daughter is 21 months and it took her the first 30 minutes to understand everything then after that, she took off running around the zoo and loved collecting candy. There about 40 stations set up around the Zoo for candy and food. The interesting part was that they gave away some candy but most of it was organic granola bars, chips, apple juice, cereal and stickers. It was a really different idea. At first we were dissapointed but then some of the snack items were really good and healthy for you so it turned out really interesting in a good way. There were also stations of gelato, funnel cakes, ice cream and etc if you wanted a snack. If you want to see animals you'll have to go during the day, there were only a few out so it was mainly about looking at everyone else's costumes and the food. We look foward to participating next year!

    just OK

by purpletulip44 on 10/24/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

You definately don't have enough time. The zoo is a big place and you can't get to all the booths and let the kids play in 3 hours. Some of the booths are handing out things like outlet covers and baked snacks instead of candy. Any candy was the very small bite size snickers and you only get one. Overall, we did not leave with $40 worth of anything. The zoo was decorated very nicely and my son did have a blast just running around and it being night time. I'm not compelled to go back next year unless he makes me.

    Needs more animals, less candy.

by dadof6yearoldand4yearold on 10/24/10Smithsonian's National Zoo - Washington

Good event. However, I was hoping to see more animal stuff that I don't see during regular hours such as feedings, environmental enrichment, and nocturnal animals. A lot of the activity was focused on giving out candy. My kids get plenty of that on Halloween and other events this time of year. I was hoping that BotZ would be less focused on trick-or-treating. The decorations and displays were great, especially the invertebrate house.
