About

BONEY JAMES IN CONCERT:

Legendary sax man Boney James is a model of stamina and endurance, consistently wowing fans with his nonpareil virtuosity and herculean performances. Taking the stage with his trusty Selmer Mark VI saxophone, James eschews the placidity of smooth jazz in favor of a bombastic playing style, and whether he's leading call and response with his band or tearing through an epic solo he never fails to bring the house down. Billboard named him their No. 3 Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade, and fans lucky enough to catch him on his upcoming tour will be left with no questions as to why.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Massachusetts-born James Oppenheim, a.k.a. Boney James, began playing clarinet at age eight, switching to saxophone two years later. In his teens, he was introduced to Motown and jazz saxophonist Grover Washington Jr., leading him to join a fusion band when his family moved him to Los Angeles at age 14. Following stints as a session player for acts like the Isley Brothers and Teena Marie and a featured role playing in Morris Day's band, James released his solo debut album Trust in 1992. Since then, he has released more than a dozen albums, selling more than three million records worldwide and earning a number of accolades including a Soul Train Award and two NAACP Image Awards. Back on the road,  he'll draw from his decade-spanning catalog to deliver fans an unforgettable night of virtuoso sax playing.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Unbelievable! A non-stop wonderful show for almost 2 hours. Boney seems almost unreal in how long he can hold a note. Don't miss this!"

"Boney James is a great performer. He came off of the stage and danced with the audience, and he played to both sides of the stage. He sounded great and his band was fantastic."

"Boney James did what Boney does. He rocked the place. Great concert. Would go again next week if they played."

    Packed House

by Kingmeister on 7/14/09The Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center - El Paso

I was a bit disappointed in the Introduction (there was none, he just walked out on stage and began playing). It would have been nice if a local DJ would have said a few kinds words about Boney's CD's and latest tour. However, Boney and his group played almost two hours non-stop. He played several selections from the Seduction CD, as well as a few from Body Language. His bass was awesome as were keyboards and lead guitar. The drummer was held to solid jazz except for his solo about half-way through concert. He had many standing ovations and cheers. His best moment was when he entered the audience and played through the orchestra section. Overall, I would say his style is a combination of Dave Koz, Grover Washington Jr, and David Sanborn. I would attend again if he returned to El Paso's Plaza Theatre.

    The Sax is Sexy

by Quelindo on 7/14/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

The only thing that I would recommend is to have less guitar and keyboard. There were time when you could not hear Boney on the Sax because the other instruments were too loud. Maybe I was sitting too close to the stage.

    Boney James Concert

by Slimbob on 7/14/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

I was a little disappointed at the show starting 30 minutes late, and we had to stand in line 15-20 minutes in the heat past when the doors were supposed to open.Nicely dressed guests spending 100.00 per ticket should not have to stand in the heat and sweat, period. Aside from these aggravations, hospitality inside, waiters/waitresses were excellent and Boney did his usual magic on stage. Overall I had a great time and will be back. Great show and memorable evening.

    Boney was the Bomb!!!!

by Bigpapi47 on 7/14/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

I really liked the Boney James concert. It was my first time at the house and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Great setting! even though it was pretty much a packed house, I could see from everywhere I stood. I hope that the house will continue to bring jazz artists to this venue.(Kirk Whalum would be nice). I haven't felt that kind of atmosphere sine the Caravan of Dreams.

    Boney James was awe-inspiring

by jaymac on 7/14/09The Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center - El Paso

My husband had seen Boney James in concert in Sacramento in June and raved about him. When we saw that he was going to be in El Paso we new we had to go. I could not have imagined the talent in the band and by Boney James himself. We loved Boney's crowd interaction, we were very entertained, and the length of the concert was perfect.

Late start but worth the wait

by JudyS on 7/14/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

The entertainment and tunes were excellent from start to finsh. Once the music started I thoroughly enjoyed every single moment. Going out on a Sunday night is tough with early wakeup call on Monday morning, so glad I did....replayed the music all the way to the office.

    Boney James

by Feelgood on 7/14/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

This was my first time at the House of Blues, Dallas. the policy of keeping patrons standing out side in the heat while waiting on the doors to open is really punishing. There is no cause ofr this. It is in humane. The facility it self is excellent for a small intimate show. Loved it. Boney was off the chain. The sound was a little to be desired but overall I thouroughly enjoyed the show.

Boney James at House of Blues

by TXJazzLover on 7/13/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

Boney was fantastic last night at the House of Blues in Dallas. I had seen him several years ago in Richmond, VA, and he was as good last night-if not better. I highly recommend seeing him live if you are a smooth jazz fan. The crowd was completely engaged and Boney really gets the audience fired up. He has tons of charisma along with his obvious musical talents. I will see him again if he returns to Texas. Thanks Boney!!

by CBaby on 7/13/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

Awesome Concert! I was in hopes that he would play, "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," and that Quinn would come to the stage to sing for us. Thank you Boney for making our Sunday night a night to remember!
