Felder, Doobies, and Boston - a fabulous show!

by In2Driving on 8/5/14Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View

All three bands did a great job. Don Felder apologized for not being able to play longer; he had the crowd on its feet and probably could have gone on for another 2 hours. The Doobies were fantastic - the great harmonies were still intact and they had everyone dancing in front of their seats. Boston was awesome as well, playing a bunch of their hits as well as a few new songs. While the musicians were awesome, I can't say the same for the sound. The mix was horrible - the sound guy should be fired! I saw Boston in Texas and it was 1000% better sound. Somehow they managed to even distort the kick drums! A really crappy job!

    Like the choirs of heaven!!

by Jonboysf on 8/5/14Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View

OK, I admit I'm a huge Boston fan. Most everyone who knows me knows that Boston will be played at my funeral. So the chance to hear them live (on the West Coast...a rarity) was not to be passed up. I was less excited about Don Felder (didn't the Eagles fire that guy?) and the Doobies, minus Michael McDonald (how do you replicate that voice?) but in the end was pleasantly surprised by the quality of all the acts! Don Felder wrote many of the Eagles' hits including Hotel California so he can perform a ton of their songs and did, flawlessly! The highlight of his set was Seven Bridges Road. As I said to my buddy, it was like seeing the Eagles without the ego! I was very suspicious of a Doobie Brothers show without McDonald but they covered his parts so well you almost didn't know he was absent. They played fewer hits than the other two bands but still had everyone on their feet dancing. Ironically, McDonald had a show three nights later and just a few miles away with another iconic 80s band, Toto! I have always thought the Doobies are the perfect band for a warm summer evening and they did not disappoint at all! Then the came the angel choir otherwise known as Boston. Heaven on Earth Tour indeed!! They played hit after hit and sound as great as they always have, sticking to the tight harmonies, sweet dueling guitar riffs and fancy keyboard work that made them famous. I had previously apologized to my concert mates for my bad singing to every Boston song but I could have easily been drowned out by other fans singing their hearts out. Hits like Cool The Engines and The Launch made it feel like being in church, with the AMAZING keyboard/organ work of Tom Scholz. If you are a fan of Boston or just 70s/80s guitar rock, I HIGHLY recommend this show. You will not be disappointed!

    a lot of fun

by rockwatcher on 8/5/14Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View

had a lot of fun listening to the ol' stuff. A bit disappointed that Steppenwolf wasn't part of the show. I kind of spent a lot of money expecting to see that "package" I guess there is small print in buying show tickets too! Oh, well, better knowledge now.

Don Felder was great. So many memories of the Eagles. Loved the Doobie Bros. They are always a good time. Boston was great too.

    Some Great Classic Rock

by robbie06 on 8/5/14Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View

I'm more of a jamband/blues kind of guy. This was not really my genre, as all three bands got up and played their hits although the Doobies and especially Boston did jam a bit. Don Felder opened with a 30 minutes all-Eagles set, impressive mostly for the lush, beautiful harmonies. He closed with Hotel California which he wrote the music for during his 27 year stint in The Eagles. The Doobie Brothers were next, and my favorite of the evening. You've heard the songs so many times but it doesn't matter when The Doobies deliver them with such high energy and tight musicianship. And they certainly do have a catalogue jam packed with great rock and roll tunes. They are an 8 piece lineup including saxophone. Boston was the band that I really wasn't sure if I would like but I enjoyed their set. They did most if not all of their hits. If any band in the history of rock and roll has had their material OVERPLAYED on the radio, it would be Boston's first record. Despite personally being tired of the songs, their new lead singer is quite impressive, hitting all the notes. A sterling Don't Look Back from their second record was my favorite tune of the evening. And they proved that they could stretch their instrumental muscle with a 10 or 15 minute jam towards the end of their set. Overall, if you're looking for spontaneous improvisation, this would not in general be your cup of tea. If you want to hear a long evening of classic rock and roll tunes which you recognize, performed well and faithful to the original version, you will have a splendid evening.

    Boston shoreline totally rocked!

by Richsf on 8/5/14Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View

Bone Bash 15 was just awesome. Steppenwolf cancelled and the amazing Don Felder filled in as opener. It says something when your opener is doing 7 or so Eagles songs. Doobie Brothers got the place rocking and Boston just took it all to a new level. The musicianship throughout all 3 bands was nothing short of phenomenal. Humbling if you are a musician but I am honored to witness it all.
