About

Bon Iver in Concert

With his 2007 debut album, Justin Vernon demonstrated the therapeutic, soul-cleansing properties of isolating yourself from the world in a wooden shed.

Distraught over breakups with both his girlfriend and his band (DeYarmond Edison) while recovering from a bout of mononucleosis, Vernon disappeared into the woods of his native Wisconsin in the dead of winter. He emerged with For Emma, Forever Ago, a disarming set of raw folk-rock confessionals fueled by tense acoustic strums and Vernon's pained, preternaturally soulful croon. (In keeping with the album's frigid recording environment, Vernon adopted the alias Bon Iver — a variation on the French term "bon hiver," or "good winter," which he heard used as a salutation on the 1990s TV show Northern Exposure.)

The album's unvarnished approach made Vernon an anomaly in a North American indie-rock scene otherwise dominated by the maximalist likes of Arcade Fire and Animal Collective, but its intense emotional wallop reverberated far beyond the underground. After his songs permeated the mainstream through placements on shows like Grey's Anatomy and House, Vernon found himself both getting sampled on and providing backing vocals to Kanye West's 2010 magnum opus, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

That guest appearance transformed Vernon into an unlikely hot property in the hip-hop world, with the singer later turning up on tracks by Travis Scott, Vince Staples, and Lizzo, among others. Between his myriad collaborations and side groups (which include his partnership with The National's Aaron Dessner as Big Red Machine), Bon Iver albums tend to appear only every five years or so. But each one is a major event, signaling a radical change in approach. On 2011's Grammy Award–winning self-titled effort, Vernon's wounded balladry acquired a dreamy, soft-focus splendor, and 2016's 22, A Million recast that velvet-smooth voice against a mutating backdrop of burbling electronics and fractured beats.

    Great show!

by Riley on 4/12/22Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park - Atlanta

Parking was easy, arrived early and there was a minor delay to get in but security and staff were friendly. Found seats easily. It was a really nice venue! The opener Dijon was great and Bon Iver had a great set! Would definitely come back here for another show!

    Amazing

by Sean on 4/12/22Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park - Atlanta

Genius - the sound at Chastain Amphitheater is criminally poor but it was still amazing. I’d see Bon Iver again tomorrow but unlikely to return to Chastain.

    Bon Iver

    by J. S. on 4/6/22Moody Amphitheater - Austin

This was my first Bon Iver show and they did not disappoint. The song selection was eclectic and unique - as is their music. Loved the show and would see them again.

    An Amazing evening of Music

by maestro214 on 4/6/22The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory - Irving

Bon Iver delivered a concert that bordered on the spiritual. Playing for over two hours, Justin and the band served up both the familiar and the new. All of this was accompanied by an awesome light show and excellent sound. Big spaces like that make it hard to understand some lyrics but that's a small complaint. Of particular merit was Justin's humility and gratitude toward the audience. He said multiple times how much he and the band appreciated out being there. He is definitely someone that I would love to meet someday. He appears to be a very chill and genuine guy. Loved the whole experience except for the dreadful food at the venue! Check this tour out if you can .

    I left sad..

by Liz on 4/6/22The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory - Irving

I was a bit sad he didn't play some of his major hits. Like skinny love, towers, beach baby. I know he's probably played them so much over the years and he has new tracks, but hearing those live would've been awesome since this was my first show seeing them.

    Bon Iver was great

by lucyjayne on 4/5/22Moody Amphitheater - Austin

Bon Iver was great, but this venue is terrible. I've been to two shows, had two different seating areas and the visibility is terrible and they pack too many people into the venue.

    Half-hearted performance

by Denim Dan on 4/5/22Moody Amphitheater - Austin

Bon Iver is no longer a band, it’s Justin Vernon and the Ivers. Listeners can tell when a band isn’t playing like a true band, and this was one of those cases. They played songs quickly one after another, just went through the motions. Acoustics were also bad, loud boomy bass and distorted vocals, which detracted from some of the great songs that require crisp, balanced sound. This was my third time to see Bon Iver and I wouldn’t bother paying to see them again.

Top Notch Artist in a Terrible Venue

by Austin on 4/5/22Moody Amphitheater - Austin

Bon Iver’s show was incredible and amazing as expected, however, the Waterloo Amphitheater is a terrible music venue located in a gorgeous downtown park. This is my second show at Waterloo, since it opened, and it was only the second because I had no choice but to go there, otherwise you miss one of the best artists of all time. The pitch of the seating is the worst, with a stage that’s already too low. Hopefully one day they will increase the pitch of the seated areas so you’ll have a chance at visually enjoying the show.

    Once in a lifetime show

by Matt on 11/1/21YouTube Theater - Inglewood

The show was absolutely unreal. The band and the crowd both brought their A game. It's an amazing testament to the music that the entire theater will be silent during the show, in awe of the performance. Justin and the gang never miss, and this was one of the best shows I've ever seen from them. Worth the trip.

Incredible Performance, Venue Could Use Some Improvements

by ddaatt on 10/29/21YouTube Theater - Inglewood

The YouTube Theater itself is really nice, as is SoFi Stadium. The YouTube Theater is nestled away in the back side of SoFi Stadium making it hard to find! Even coming from the parking lot there were no apparent signs of where to go and how to find the venue. Parking there is hilariously bad. There are expansive parking lots surrounding the stadium that go completely unused, while they funnel all cars into a single lane (again, not clear on where the entrance is) including all traffic from the neighboring venue at the Forum. Took about an hour to go from the street to the entrance of my assigned parking lot. And then waited in traffic some more. So if you go to a show there, be sure to arrive well in advance. All that being said, Bon Iver did not disappoint! They sounded amazing in person and played a huge set list. The casual conversation Justin Vernon had with the audience felt like he truly embraces his fans and is, like the tour name suggests, sincerely grateful.

    Came prepared!

by N from SD on 10/29/21YouTube Theater - Inglewood

Easy prep from following the venue's Instagram. I knew of the clear bag policy. I liked that everyone wore their mask when they weren't eating or drinking. Great views and sounds.

    Wow

by Doc on 10/27/21YouTube Theater - Inglewood

Definitely a singular concert experience that even a curmudgeon would love. Not only was it a blessing to see Bon Iver in a smaller venue, but the sound is really incredible. Hope to see more shows at this venue in the future.
