About

Bon Iver in Concert

With his 2007 debut album, Justin Vernon demonstrated the therapeutic, soul-cleansing properties of isolating yourself from the world in a wooden shed.

Distraught over breakups with both his girlfriend and his band (DeYarmond Edison) while recovering from a bout of mononucleosis, Vernon disappeared into the woods of his native Wisconsin in the dead of winter. He emerged with For Emma, Forever Ago, a disarming set of raw folk-rock confessionals fueled by tense acoustic strums and Vernon's pained, preternaturally soulful croon. (In keeping with the album's frigid recording environment, Vernon adopted the alias Bon Iver — a variation on the French term "bon hiver," or "good winter," which he heard used as a salutation on the 1990s TV show Northern Exposure.)

The album's unvarnished approach made Vernon an anomaly in a North American indie-rock scene otherwise dominated by the maximalist likes of Arcade Fire and Animal Collective, but its intense emotional wallop reverberated far beyond the underground. After his songs permeated the mainstream through placements on shows like Grey's Anatomy and House, Vernon found himself both getting sampled on and providing backing vocals to Kanye West's 2010 magnum opus, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

That guest appearance transformed Vernon into an unlikely hot property in the hip-hop world, with the singer later turning up on tracks by Travis Scott, Vince Staples, and Lizzo, among others. Between his myriad collaborations and side groups (which include his partnership with The National's Aaron Dessner as Big Red Machine), Bon Iver albums tend to appear only every five years or so. But each one is a major event, signaling a radical change in approach. On 2011's Grammy Award–winning self-titled effort, Vernon's wounded balladry acquired a dreamy, soft-focus splendor, and 2016's 22, A Million recast that velvet-smooth voice against a mutating backdrop of burbling electronics and fractured beats.

    Just wow

    by J. C. on 6/13/22Thompson's Point - Portland

One of the best live performances I've been to. The double drum kit and bass are still thumping in my chest. Can't wait to see them again. And again.

    Flawless

by Swake on 6/13/22Thompson's Point - Portland

Third time seeing Bon Iver. Complex music that is totally accessible and each time is more refined. Justin Vernon captured the audience with every song and exhibited his usual unpretentious gentle nature. Hope I get to see him a fourth time sometime in the future.

What a great overall evening for a musical, natural, and social experience. Beautiful evening, culminating in a gorgeous sunset. Great beer and food truck choices. Wonderful warmup by Bonny Light Horseman, and exquisite show by Bon Iver. Thanks to Thompson's Point and the Planet Earth for such an enjoyable overall experience!

    Bon Iver Killed It

by RoaringForest on 6/13/22Thompson's Point - Portland

Was not sure what to expect from Thompson's Point venue, but we loved it. Outdoors, food trucks, etc. Very easy to get to and navigate once inside. No idea how many people were there. Justin Vernon and crew simply killed it. We've never seen them live and this was a show rescheduled from prior year(s?) due to Covid. I'd watched a slew of his live performances and was expecting a great show, and expectations were completely met. I could not believe how good it sounded in the outdoor venue. People were cool and we all were just on a mellow, Bon Iver vibe. I cannot wait to see them again. And again. And again. We remarked afterwards at the age diversity and overall good feeling of the crowd and the band. Bon Iver killed it.

Visuals and lighting were great, Justin’s vocals were incredible and it was overall a great vibe. Really liked the encore and was so happy they played re: Stacks during it. Great setlist.

    Poor stage visibility

by Lauri on 6/10/22Artpark Mainstage Theater - Lewiston

We were seated in BB stage right, and we’re not able to see the vocalists becAsue they were at stage right. The artists did not move at all throughout the performance and so our view was extremely limited. The large speaker that hangs down from the ceiling restricted our view of the stage and the performers. Very disappointing.

    Great band, good experience

    by M. S. on 6/3/22

I saw Bon Iver in ATL in April at Cadence Bank Amphitheater. Overall, it was a great show and setlist and would recommend! I had never been to a Bon Iver show before this, so maybe it’s just the vibe, but 90% of the people were sitting down the whole time. I personally really enjoy standing up and singing when an artist is performing, but I was further in the back on second level, so I wasn’t comfortable being the only one standing up the entirety of the show. I sat in a row against a wall, and I had so many people walk in front of me. I guess everyone in the back decided they just had to get drinks/use the restroom basically during the whole show. I love going to concerts to listen to the artists and music, so it’s kind of annoying when people go just to drink and hang out. I’m not really sure if it was the venue/setting itself or if this is most of the crowds at Bon Iver shows.

    Great Time

by BLucas on 4/22/22Live Oak Bank Pavilion - Wilmington

Great event! I’m glad we had seats up front as the lawn is not very inclined and I could imagine the views would be subpar. The sound was fantastic. I had two complaints but neither took away from the experience. One is the drink prices, $14-16 for a beer is absurd. Second, the chairs in the rows had no numbers and people struggled to figure out their seats (basic counting is hard).

    Love Bon Iver Setlist ok

by ACU on 4/22/22FPL Solar Amphitheater at Bayfront Park - Miami

For a longtime fan full filling his dream of watching bon Iver live was a amazing experience. Unfortunately to me the set list was not the best choice, some parts of the concert felt like one long song instead without any cohesiveness. Still massive respect for the artist and the art.

Not a concert, It’s an experience

by Johnny Neat on 4/18/22FPL Solar Amphitheater at Bayfront Park - Miami

Bon Iver is one of the best musical acts around. Vernon is a legendary talent that must not be missed if given a chance to experience his music. Moving from the intimate Fillmore to the open Bayfront Park only shows how much Bon Iver has sonically grown in the years of its inception. Bon Iver must never be missed.

    Surprised!

by nina on 4/18/22FPL Solar Amphitheater at Bayfront Park - Miami

I’ve never listened to Bon Iver and was just there for the opener. I really enjoyed their music and truly felt it in my soul. Some older fans I talked to we’re actually disappointed in what the played and we’re upset, I was chilling though. Would see again!!

Great show by Bon Iver, amazing venue

by Chirpchirp on 4/18/22FPL Solar Amphitheater at Bayfront Park - Miami

Loved the acoustics, the venue was amazing and Bon Iver was out of this world. Do wish they would have given more upbeat songs to the encore. At the same time, I love their points of reflection and the message not to live in fear. So valuable. I will say Dijon was much less than desirable… Serious thumbs down. Not sure why Justin Vernon loves them so much…they are awful.

Indie Folk Magic Under The Miami Sky

by WendyG on 4/18/22FPL Solar Amphitheater at Bayfront Park - Miami

Bon Iver was special ! What a treat to listen to them live under the Miami skyline. The way they synced their music with the lights was beautiful to experience. Their opening act Dijon was also wonderful. Can’t wait to see them again live when given the chance.

Super easy to get into the venue by using Live Nation App. Live Nation staff were super helpful with showing me which section my seats were located.
