About

He didn't name it and doesn't refer to it as such, but folk-rock legend Bob Dylan has been on what's become known as his Never Ending Tour since 1988. The longest the Minnesota native has gone without playing a concert since then was a three-month break he took in 1997 to recover from what could have been a fatal chest infection.

Dylan has played more than 2,500 gigs during this incredible run, and despite a catalog that dates back more than a half century, the shows aren't greatest-hits rehashes. The iconoclastic singer-songwriter tends to focus on whatever his latest musical project happens to be, and he often reworks his well-known songs significantly. Dylan's current backing band -- all of whom played on his 2012 studio album, Tempest -- has a bit of a country vibe, and  usually features guitarists Stu Kimball and Charlie Sexton along with Tony Garnier (bass), drummer George Receli (drums), and  Donnie Herron (pedal steel, lap steel, banjo, mandolin, violin, viola).

Dylan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and he would have landed there based on his work in the 1960s alone, when he wrote and recorded some of the most enduring and groundbreaking material in musical history. Though his '60s songbook includes classics like "Blowin' in the Wind," "Subterranean Homesick Blues," "Like a Rolling Stone," and "I Want You," he hasn't stopped writing and recording critically acclaimed material, and is constantly mining his archives to release previously unreleased material.

  • Dylan did not disappoint.

by Star on 3/27/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The people who went with me were upset because he didn't play the songs they knew from way back in the day that made him famous. I liked the show because it was pretty much him reciting his poetry, along to music. The only song I was familiar with is You Gotta Serve Somebody, but the crowd on the floor, they knew a lot of the songs he played.

  • Only recognized two of the songs.

by Terry on 3/27/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 1 out of 5

I have listened to him for close to 60 years and we really looking forward to the show and we were really disappointed.

  • Played Only New Material

    by Jane77 on 3/27/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 3 out of 5

Have followed Bob Dylan for years but not a huge fan. He's very talented so thought it would be a good show. Unfortunately, he only played new material. Did not recognize anything he played. Also, a little strange that he did not say one word to the audience. He started out at the piano, stayed there about 90 min, then is was over. No encore or thanks for coming. First show I've ever attended where the artist said nothing. Great show for die hard fans. Not so much for casual fans. Not worth my time, $ or effort. For the cost of the show, artist ought to play at least some of what the fans came to hear.

  • Best Dylan concert ever!

by Loved it on 3/27/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The lighting and sound were excellent. We loved this concert!

  • Checked Bucket List, Definitely Not Worth It

by BourbonCity on 3/27/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 1 out of 5

So let me preface this with Bob Dylan is an amazing poet, songwriter and instrumentalist. I understand he is not a singer or performer. But this show was so bad, I almost fell asleep twice. So many people were getting up and leaving-there was probably only 60% at the close of the show. When I went to the restroom there were so many people mass exodus-ing I thought I had missed the end. We had to put our phones in locked pouches-which was completely fine, however this was definitely because of how awful the show was and trying to protect BD’s image. Do not waste your money, watch YouTube videos of him instead. They’re definitely much, much better.

  • Disappointment

by Shuff on 3/27/24Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville - AshevilleRating: 1 out of 5

The concert started promptly at 8 pm. They started with a few unfamiliar blues songs. 93 minutes later we had listened to a mediocre blues concert. He did not play any of his top five "hits"that most fans have come love and what propelled him to fame. There was no flow or dynamic to the show. There was a general lack of enthusiasm. For my wife and I it was a 2 1/2 hour drive and a poorly spend $250.

  • Great concert

by Unknown on 3/27/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 3 out of 5

It was a great concert hearing Bob Dylan's voice live but I really wished he would have played at least one or two of his top hits from back in the day.

  • Left a lot to be desired

by Kim on 3/26/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 2 out of 5

To start with, per the artist request, we were required to put our cell phones away in a locked pocket and could not use any cell phones until after the concert. Then we had to wait in line in order to get our cell phones unlocked so that we could leave the concert. Not a great way to start the fun at a concert. Then, Bob Dylan played mainly blues, music, and none of his hits through the years. I was looking forward to hearing a variety of things that he played through the years, but that was not to be the case. He seem to play a lot from his latest published album. When Bob Dylan finished the concert, there was no real warning, and the curtain closed right after he finished his last song. Very abrupt ending! The entire experience left a lot to be desired!

  • Disappointed

by Susan on 3/26/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 1 out of 5

Bob Dylan has so many hit songs, but not one was played at this concert. I believe his fans deserve one or two hit songs for their money.

  • Bad mix

by Dave on 3/26/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 3 out of 5

For an honest opinion. I thought the mix was terrible. Could not hear the vocals. The bad was tight but tooo load compared to the vocals. At first I thought it was just me but first my wife asked if I could hear Bob then our neighbors on both sides asked.

  • It was like a bad dream

by John Flynn on 3/26/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 1 out of 5

Bob Dylan has an iconic body of music that I have listened to all my life. In two hours he did not play one song I ever heard. I was in a row with many fans who felt exactly the same.

  • Eeek

by Sara on 3/26/24The Louisville Palace - LouisvilleRating: 1 out of 5

I hesitate to even write this, but I feel I must. This show was almost comically bad. The sound was awful, Dylan hid behind a piano. We made it 30 minutes and left. I’m a big Dylan fan and this was just disappointing. I know we weren’t the only ones to leave. Wish I had read reviews before.

  • Such a sweet night

by Christy on 3/26/24Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville - AshevilleRating: 5 out of 5

I was nervous about how Bob would sound and it was a sweet surprise to hear his voice beautiful and clear. I listened to the tour set list ahead of time which I strongly recommend so people can familiarize themselves with the songs he plays. Don’t go expecting his hits but if you stay open to his creativity you will be delighted by blusey/Tom waits style songs that showcase a true master at his simple, heartfelt craft.

  • Awesome performance

by Cal on 3/25/24Crown Theatre - FayettevilleRating: 4 out of 5

Venue was nice and the performance was great. Dylan sang all his songs from his Rough and Rowdy Ways and some of his older lesser known songs. My highlight was him ending his concert with Every Grain of Sand.

  • Oh So Very Dylan

by TheRetroSocialite on 3/25/24Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville - AshevilleRating: 5 out of 5

I have been lucky enough to see Bob Dylan 4 or 5 times before this last show in Asheville, and this was by far my favorite performance. I absolutely loved that we were not able to use our phones during the show. The people at security had these lockable bags we were required to slip our phones into, only to be unlocked as we walked out. This prevented people from watching the show through their screens as they recorded the show. I’ve never understood people who do that. The video is going to sound terrible- you’ll never watch it again- and why can’t we all just live in the moment anymore?? Anyway- the effect was perfect in that it felt very intimate and beautiful. We were all there- in the moment- enjoying one of the greatest artists of all time doing his thing. He didn’t spend time or money on any kind of stage show. Rather, the stage was lit with just a few well-placed lights, giving the scene a nice low glow. Most of his songs were from his newer albums, and it was lovely to get a glimpse into where his mind is at this point of his life and career. As he is my favorite ever, I cried at several moments. One of his songs he performed, “I’ve Made Up My Mind to Give Myself to You”, seemed to be a love letter for all of us. For 65 years the man has made music that matters in a way that is distinctly Bob Dylan. I thought to myself that of all the times and eras I could have been born, how lucky am I that I am on Earth at the same time as Bob Dylan, and how beautiful a life I have that I’m in the same room with him- again. PRO TIP: Bob Dylan starts his show at whatever time it is supposed to start- on the dot. If there is no opener (there wasn’t at our show), and the show is supposed to start at 8 PM, he will begin at 8 PM sharp. There were still people milling in at 8:20 or so, and they had missed 3 songs by then and it was very distracting for the rest of us. Get to your seat early so you won’t miss giving him a standing ovation when he comes in. His band was incredible. They played tight and it all sounded fantastic. 5 stars, all around.

  • Loved Seeing A Music Legend!

by TeacherMsB on 3/25/24Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville - AshevilleRating: 5 out of 5

It was wonderful to see a true legend in music history. Bob Dylan has performed for as long as I have lived, and has influenced so many musicians and genres of music. It was a true honor to see him in person, and he sounded much better in person than on any recorded music that I own. I loved hearing him sing and play the harmonica best of all, but I enjoyed hearing him play the piano as well. I was so glad that Mr. Dylan played at a venue that was so close to where my husband and I live so that we didn't have to travel so far to a concert at our older ages (we live about an hour away from Asheville in Cullowhee, NC). Both my husband and I were impressed with Bob Dylan's ability to perform so well, and we are grateful to have seen such a music legend!

  • Bob Dylan show

    by Cim2fine4u on 3/24/24Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville - AshevilleRating: 4 out of 5

The venue was great, they should have put up big screens due to the back rows only being able to see Bob as a small spot on the stage. The sound was amazing. Some folks were rude and shushed people multiple times. They were only having a good time singing along. All in all it was a great show, once in a lifetime experience!

  • A legend

by Heather H on 3/24/24Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville - AshevilleRating: 5 out of 5

Bob Dylan is a legend. DO NOT question it, buy the tickets. You will not regret it.

  • One Time Too Many

by MikeW on 3/24/24Rating: 2 out of 5

I've seen him many times over the years, but I've seen him one time too many, and that was about 10 years ago. Everything in the disappointing reviews today could have been written years ago. I wish I wouldn't have seen him the last time so I could have remembered a great show.

  • Old crotchety woman. Great writer.

by VicValley on 3/24/24Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville - AshevilleRating: 3 out of 5

It was very odd how I came in to going to this concert. I was in town doing some training, and saw an event center, and wondered if anyone was playing during my stay. It turned out that Bob Dylan was playing in a couple of hours from that point. I thought that's pretty impressive I wonder if there's any tickets. So I looked, and sure enough there were some tickets available and I bought some second row seats. Anyhow, I get to the show, and it starts on time and everything. Immediately, his voice was terrible. But after about two songs, it warmed up and was way better than I ever thought it would be. I would not say that any member was actually great. They were all better on their instruments, then Bob Dylan was on piano, however. It surprised me that he was playing piano, and my personal opinion is that he probably shouldn't ever play it again. The drums did not have any cymbal mics, whatsoever. So the mix was really weird. Aside from that, sound was good. This was not a huge building, and is probably the most intimate concert that he will ever play, again, so that is kind of neat. You could tell he was definitely a curmudgeon. He got really mad at his guitar player in the middle of the set. But what was funny, is that he got mad at the guitar player who was actually playing good and sounded like he was playing the right song. The other guitarist was really loud and not playing well. So I'm pretty sure he had those confused. He seemed grouchy, and did not do an encore. But overall, he is a writing legend, and I would rather be a bit disappointed at his playing, than regretful of not going to see it happen.
