About

He didn't name it and doesn't refer to it as such, but folk-rock legend Bob Dylan has been on what's become known as his Never Ending Tour since 1988. The longest the Minnesota native has gone without playing a concert since then was a three-month break he took in 1997 to recover from what could have been a fatal chest infection.

Dylan has played more than 2,500 gigs during this incredible run, and despite a catalog that dates back more than a half century, the shows aren't greatest-hits rehashes. The iconoclastic singer-songwriter tends to focus on whatever his latest musical project happens to be, and he often reworks his well-known songs significantly. Dylan's current backing band -- all of whom played on his 2012 studio album, Tempest -- has a bit of a country vibe, and  usually features guitarists Stu Kimball and Charlie Sexton along with Tony Garnier (bass), drummer George Receli (drums), and  Donnie Herron (pedal steel, lap steel, banjo, mandolin, violin, viola).

Dylan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and he would have landed there based on his work in the 1960s alone, when he wrote and recorded some of the most enduring and groundbreaking material in musical history. Though his '60s songbook includes classics like "Blowin' in the Wind," "Subterranean Homesick Blues," "Like a Rolling Stone," and "I Want You," he hasn't stopped writing and recording critically acclaimed material, and is constantly mining his archives to release previously unreleased material.

    Rough and Rowdy

by trex4757 on 4/1/24The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

the show started at 8:00 PM on the nose. my son and i had second row seats, but could have had front row if ticketmaster hadn't sprung the event code requiirement on me during presale. it took me 1/2 hour to locate it. by then the best seats were taken . He opened with 'watching the river flow"he stayed at the piano for the entirety of the show, but he would stand up a lot and then sit back down. he was visibly frustated with the sound. his voice is holding up well. he played harmonica on 3 songs. the audience loved him. he added "big river"by johnny cash to his set list. he also played, "you go your way and i'll go mine, "i'll be your baby tonight", "tonight, i'll be staying here with you", "serve somebody", "when i paint my masterpiece"and several of songs from the "rough and rowdy ways"album. the show lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes. it was well worth the time and money spent

Dylan Gives Stellar Performance at the Orpheum in Memphis

by J Purvis on 4/1/24The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Bob Dylan, who has performed many times over the years at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, turned in a top-notch performance at the venue Friday night. He played seventeen songs with his backing band in a show that lasted approximately 100 minutes. Nine of the songs came from his most recent album of original material, “Rough and Rowdy Ways,” which was released in 2020. The remaining selections included seven tunes stretching across his illustrious career and a cover of Johnny Cash’s “Big River” that had the audience clapping in appreciation. The concert began with Dylan’s band showing their chops instrumentally for about five minutes as they laid the groundwork for the appearance of the man himself. Dylan strode out confidently in sharp attire with his white shoes standing out as he quickly got into the flow of the show opener “Watching the River Flow.” After that, things unfolded in a fairly leisurely pace. Dylan, who played the piano exclusively, alternated between standing up and sitting down. He picked up the harmonica probably on three occasions, utilizing it to great effect on the sultry “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight.” Predictably, the crowd went nuts whenever the harmonica came into play. There were several standouts from the songs Dylan performed before what appeared to be a sellout crowd at the Orpheum. “When I Paint My Masterpiece” swayed due to the almost jocular manner in which the bard addressed the selection. The lyrics of “Crossing the Rubicon” would have to be considered weighty and contemplative and the artist sung them with the requisite gravity. The show closer, “Every Grain of Sand,” benefited from exquisite phrasing of Dylan. Mention must be made of the subtle yet effective playing of all the band members onstage. This concert captured the greatness of Dylan as a live performer. Everyone who considers themselves an aficionado of live music should see him at least once in their lifetime.

by BucketList1951 on 4/1/24The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Great concert for the true fans of Bob Dylan. His body of work, minus the commercial successes (poplar hits) ! I enjoyed it very much Phones were placed in locked pouches and were not allowed during the performance which was a first for me! For this performance it was a plus. Dylan has not lost his touch, go see him!

Nobel Noble Mon’ Delivered the Goods

by Patman on 4/1/24Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville - Asheville

I have had the pleasure of seeing Bob Dylan with different band lineups preform on many occasions since mid 1970’s. In large venues and smaller halls. Some shows were better than others. All were memorable. The recent Asheville show was flawless and the audience response obviously thought the same. He didn’t miss a lyrical word and the band he led that evening was as tight and awesome as ever. I feel for my friends and others who have never heard him perform. usually because of their mindset of “contempt prior to investigation” or in other words thinking something sucks before checking it out themselves. Usually because of unfounded prejudices instilled from others who have never seen or truly heard this iconic musical poet and his numerous legendary band mates live, or through the airwaves and have believed opinions of others, mostly uninformed, who also haven’t listened to much of his body of work. The recent show in Asheville in my opinion re-instilled in my heart n soul what a true asset this American legend and Nobel prize winning Nobel Mon’ is to the World. Long may your rough and rowdy bad self continue to run and blow minds during your scheduled stops on your endless tour. I salute you sir. Peace out.

    Awesome show

by Frisbee on 4/1/24The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

It was the alternate arrangement show. Favorite song with new attitude and arrangements. Often in sort of reggae tempos. Excellent piano playing by Bob. He was in good voice also. The band was tight. As per past concerts he never spoke to the audience during the evening. I do wish he had introduced the band. The Orpheum is a perfect venue for his type of show.

    Not what I expected

by Robby M on 4/1/24The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

The show was ok. All the songs sounded the same almost. The band played really well though. We did find free parking about two blocks over from the event.

    Meh

by Old Rocker on 4/1/24The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Dylan was ok. They made us put our phones in a locked pouch and we had to wait in a line to get them unlocked after the performance. I hate that.

    A Great Show (almost)

by Lemon on 4/1/24The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

My first time to the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis - it was amazing! The staff and organization were impeccable. We had great seats, so I thought the actual musical enjoyment would also be impeccable, but it wasn't! We could not understand the great Bobby Ds words! It was all a blur. But of course the music itself was legendary, the fans were die-hard, so it was fun. Just couldn't figure out why the sound of the words (not Dylan's fault) were so blurry. But I gotta figure out that sound problem before future visits.

You should see Bob Dylan at least once

by Tman on 4/1/24The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

He’s a legend and his band was really good. If you’ve never seen him live, you should at least once. But once is probably enough for most people, including me.

Best Concert I Have Ever Seen

by Bob Fan 4 Life Now! on 4/1/24The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

I have seen Eric Clapton, the Grateful Dead, Phish, Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, the Rolling Stones, Sublime, and many many others. I have seen Bob Dylan before at a festival where he made a brief appearance but I never got the "Bob experience"until now. This was the best performance that I have ever seen from an artist hands down! There is no comparison to Bob Dylan and his Band. His last two albums "Shadow Kingdom"& "Rough and Rowdy"are incredibly mysterious and the performance was Absolutely Immaculate! I went both nights... one all by myself and another when I took my family. If you miss this experience on this tour... you will have missed one of the Greatest Musical Performances of All-Time from Bob Dylan & His Band. The poster, picture of the marquis, pictures of my family and I look fantastic in our music room. I got a chance to take my son to the Greatest Musician of All-Time! Maybe you can too...

Dylan should heed the advice of Merle Haggard.

by Bu on 3/30/24Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville - Asheville

I could not make out the words to hardly any of his songs, either because of the marbles in his mouth, or his own sound system, or the venues' sound system. The support band's music was good, though, and enjoyable. Dylan's piano playing was not at all at a professional level.

    Ethereal, profound and enigmatic

by BRoss on 3/29/24Brooklyn Bowl Nashville - Nashville

What else can I say? Bob Dylan is Bob Dylan. He is the essential enigma and you should never expect him to be anything otherwise. What he delivered was powerful, filled with a depth that matches whatever is going through his head at that moment and not held back at all. It's like going to temple, church, or whatever works for you, and you leave knowing that you just experienced something greater than the sum of its parts. Loved every moment of the performance and still thinking about it.

    Bummer of a birthday

by Eljay on 3/28/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

Went to see Bob Dylan for my birthday. It wasn't the best experience. I've seen him before and absolutely loved it. I love The Louisville Palace and have no issues with the venue. Parking a breeze, great seats, concessions smooth. Didn't like that we had to lock up our phones, so we had no concept of time. But that's not the Palace's fault. Merch was disappointing because aside from 1 shirt, the others were from previous tours. So we didn't buy anything. The show itself was mostly very low key and unimpressive. I barely recognized any songs. I know Dylan is a legend, he has a huge catalog, respect him and his talent, and realize he's up in age. However, everything seemed off. His voice was muffled or he was mumbling the lyrics, couldn't understand a word. Tempo felt off at times, and I'm not a musician but the piano didn't sound right either. At one point after a song, he stood up, stepped to the side of his piano and the curtain dropped. Several of us sat back down thinking it must be an intermission. Nope, staff immediately began taking down chairs in the orchestra pit. It was over and he hadn't engaged the crowd or even thanked everyone for coming. I left feeling let down. Honestly, it's the first time I ever considered leaving a concert early.

    Lackluster

by Disappointed on 3/28/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

First, I am a responder and need to have my phone on at all times. I actually missed an important call because my phone was locked in a little bag. It was a death that needed my response. I was not there for people for whom I needed to provide care. Second, each song sounded the same. Poor quality for high price. When the band played ONE different tune, the crowd stood up and became excited--but only for a few moments as the band returned to its lackluster tunes. If I were the leader or in the band, I would have taken that cue to play mostly those types of tunes. There were many who walked out early, including me.

    Horrible

by Louisville on 3/27/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

Do not waste your money on Bob Dylan tickets. I was extremely disappointed he chose not to perform any of his many many hits, only songs from his last album which had basically same beat as the first. In addition the band had little to no movement. Almost robotic. 🙁

    Dylan playing bar blues

by Harry on 3/27/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

Seeing Dylan in Palace Theatre was dream come true. Just sitting in the 4th row from the stage and seeing legend so close was eternal memory and something I never thought I am going to have a chance to experience. Of course, Dylan is eccentric and does things his way - so this was blues session of mostly new songs and unrecognizable few old classics. I really wish that he played guitar instead of saloon sounding piano, but that was deal offered by him. His band was good, but fully controlled by him - they looked like they are scared of him. It was strange, but unforgettable experience, almost like being in a Twilight Zone. Palace Theatre is also special place, and you can feel history and energy of the past times where Dylan fits perfectly. No phones was great experience, people were still squirmy, some leaving, some coming in the middle of the concert, something that I can't understand. Same as curtain went up at 8 o'clock, and music started immediately, concert ended with curtain coming down, no encore, no thank you and goodbye. But again, that's Dylan. Glad that he made it through the concert, and thanks for songs that defined last 60 years.

Dylan's tour rolls on and on

by Chuck on 3/27/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

As anyone that cares already knows, Bob Dylan continues to crisscross the US & Western Europe on a regular basis. He was one of very few elderly artists that play new material.

    Dylan did not disappoint.

by Star on 3/27/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

The people who went with me were upset because he didn't play the songs they knew from way back in the day that made him famous. I liked the show because it was pretty much him reciting his poetry, along to music. The only song I was familiar with is You Gotta Serve Somebody, but the crowd on the floor, they knew a lot of the songs he played.
