Blood, Sweat & Tears on Tour

Though they haven't released a new studio album since 1980, Blood, Sweat & Tears have never left the road. And although their current lineup features none of the players who appeared on their string of hit singles from their late-'60s/early-'70s commercial peak, their original mission — to fuse the compositional complexity of jazz with the power and precision of rock ‘n' roll — has carried on under the guidance of founding drummer Bobby Colomby, who no longer performs with the group but still serves as their de facto spiritual advisor/casting director. Over the years, Colomby has enlisted a number of singers — including American Idol alumnus Bo Bice — to fill the big shoes vacated by BST's most famous vocalist, David Clayton-Thomas. Since 2019, that role has been occupied by Keith Paluso, a former contestant on The Voice. But no matter who's belting out the hits, a Blood, Sweat & Tears show is guaranteed to be a brasstastic experience.

Blood, Sweat & Tears in Concert

Al Kooper could've retired in 1965 already a legend at age 21, thanks to his iconic keyboard work on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." But the restless musician would go on to play a crucial role in expanding the parameters of popular music when he joined improvisational New York group The Blues Project, before founding the even more ambitious Blood, Sweat & Tears with guitarist Steve Katz in 1967. The group's debut album, Child Is Father to the Man, was a groundbreaking fusion of rock, jazz, psychedelia and orchestral music, though creative differences would drive Kooper out of the band shortly after its release, with Katz and drummer Bobby Colomby seeking to push the group into a more accessible direction. They'd find their golden ticket into the Top 40 in the form of Canadian singer David Clayton-Thomas, a charismatic, big-voiced showman who contributed the signature single "Spinning Wheel" to the band's 1969 Grammy Award–winning self-titled album and led the group at their historic Woodstock performance that summer. Over the next few years, Blood, Sweat & Tears stood at the forefront of a jazz-rock revolution that counted Chicago and Santana as compatriots, showcasing their bold, brassy sound on swaggering originals like "Lucretia Mac Evil" and inventive covers (like their soulful rendition of Carole King's "Hi-De-Ho"). Clayton-Thomas left the band in 1972 to pursue a solo career (only to return in 1975), and since the release of 1980's Nuclear Blues, Blood, Sweat & Tears have existed primarily as a live act, with an infinite array of revolving lineups — in fact, no fewer than 175 players have passed through their ranks over the years. But under Colomby's direction, Blood, Sweat & Tears have survived and thrived into the 21st century with their big-band bonhomie intact.

  • BST was amazing!

by KLeighD on 12/13/13Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

What a band! What a show! It was so awesome to know every single song they played. I was a little surprised by two things though - 1. Even though Bo Bice introduced all of the band members, no one introduced him. There were tons of people asking who he was after the show. Goes to show you that not everyone watches American Idol. I thought that was bad form on the part of the band. 2. Their two encore songs were not songs they recorded. Most bands save their own best music to the end. I thought that was odd, but it was good nonetheless. Love this band!!

  • Way Better Than Expected!!

Didn't know just what we'd see, either very old BS&T guys or something else, since we didn't read anything about it first, just love their music. Bo was awesome, the brass and drummer were maybe better than the originals, would tell anyone they'd missed a great evening if they didn't go see this show.

Although I think only a couple of the band members are the originals, they did a remarkable job of recreating the sound of Blood, Sweat & Tears that I remember from many years ago. They were every bit as good as listening to the original recordings. Great enthusiasm and interaction with the audience. If they come back to the Birchmere, I plan to be there.

Absolutely terrific! Would love to see them again! The Birchmere is a wonderful venue.

  • BS & T were better than ever!

BS & T is real music. The guitars, the horns, the lead singer, all great. They sang all their classics. It is timeless music!

  • Great night with BST

by BarbieDollLover on 12/9/13Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Everything about the show was great. Bo Bice was terrific and looked great with his hair shorter than his appearance on American Idol. Loved him then and he is far better now. The band behind him was truly amazing. Every member of the band was a star. For one song, there was a 23 year old guest drummer from Aukland, who was simply incredible. His sticks were nothing more than a blur. The guitarist, the bassist, the first trumpet and saxophonist were as good as they get. Just a reminder for those who are not aware, this is not the original band, but the band behind Bo Bice is far better than the original. Hard to believe that Bo Bice has only been with the group for 10 shows. Everything was so tight. Just a great, great show.

  • I bought tickets for B,S&T NOT a cover band

by YendorNella on 12/7/13Keith Albee Theater - HuntingtonRating: 3 out of 5

It was advertized as B,S&T to find out while reading the program at the event that NO members of the band was an original member it is disappointing to find out you paid to see a cover band. Then you find out the Manager was the EX-drummer for the original group, that is NOT the same thing. People I talked to at the event agreed that if they had known this fact they would of never bought tickets. The music wasn't bad but .......

Blood, sweat and tears was not the same without David Clayton Thomas Bo Bice doesn't come close.

  • Enjoyable evening out

    by joeboy77 on 12/6/13Keith Albee Theater - HuntingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Initially disappointed that no original members of BS&T were still in the group. Bo Bice has a very nice voice--especially for this music set. First half of show started slow but got much better in 2nd half when the standards of BS&T were performed--and done quite well..Musicians were excellent

  • And When I Die

by Cardmomma on 11/20/13Chandler Center for the Arts - ChandlerRating: 5 out of 5

I can say I saw Blood Sweat And Tears! What a night it was awesome, we had so much fun singing all the songs. Not one original band member but you would never know it. I would go and see them all over again if given the chance. Wonderful concert!

  • BST was so-so at best

by FindMyWayHome on 11/19/13Chandler Center for the Arts - ChandlerRating: 2 out of 5

Lead guitarist is very annoying. Guitar playing was good. However his onstage gyrations and silly smiles to me felt like I was at a teenage concert. The singer need some work as well. Brass section was impeccable.

  • great

by doublejo on 11/19/13Chandler Center for the Arts - ChandlerRating: 5 out of 5

Other than being a bit too loud for most of us in the audience, the show was fantastic. They had super talent, The main singer outdid himself. The level of energy and music chosen made the night. There was no intermission so it rocked straight thru.

  • little loud

by baronofchandler on 11/19/13Chandler Center for the Arts - ChandlerRating: 5 out of 5

We thought the concert was excellent, I love loud music and I thought it was a little loud for the facility, mainly because of the lead singer, very good , just loud.

  • A good cover band but not Blood, Sweat and Tears!

by Roadstar on 11/19/13Chandler Center for the Arts - ChandlerRating: 3 out of 5

I was not disappointed with the performance but rather, how the concert was promoted. There were no original members of the band but that was not broadcast until arriving at the venue.

  • The New B,S&T is by far the BEST ever.

by congaman4you on 11/19/13Chandler Center for the Arts - ChandlerRating: 5 out of 5

First a thank you to Mr. Michael A. Pollack for bringing this Monster group to The Chandler Center for the Arts. Got to share this with my 26 year old son, who himself is a multi-talented musician, song writer and lead guitar for the group Mimelight. He went in apprehensive, walked out a believer with a new found appreciation of musics' potential. I had the privilage to see the original in their day and loved their, ahead of it's time, music then. This new ensemble of master musicians and lead singer were totally amazing, and took this music to a whole new level. I feel sorry for those who missed this award winning performance. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!!!!

  • Blood SweBlood Sweat and Tears

by Anonymous on 11/19/13Chandler Center for the Arts - ChandlerRating: 4 out of 5

The band was very talented and the horns in the band make them different from other rock bands. Up front seats at a reasonable price per ticket.

  • Blood, Sweat and Tears was AWESOME!

by Anonymous on 11/19/13Chandler Center for the Arts - ChandlerRating: 5 out of 5

I almost cancelled my tickets when I read that there was notone member of the original group. I am so glad I didn't. The lead singer was fabulous and the brass section "blew" me away. It was an excellent concert!!

  • Blood Sweat & Tears

by RayIngram53 on 11/19/13Chandler Center for the Arts - ChandlerRating: 5 out of 5

Great show. I was concerned when I saw this young guy trying to sing like David Clayton Thomas but 2 songs into the set and it all came back. None of the original members were there but the sound and the energy was still there.

  • not the originals

by MikkiT on 7/28/13IP Casino Resort and Spa - BiloxiRating: 3 out of 5

While this band had a good sound and it was an enjoyable evening, they should bill themselves as the "New Blood, Sweat & Tears" as I do not believe they have any of the original bandmembers and definitely not the original lead singer.

  • Blood, Sweat & Tears were wonderful!!

by Mattie50 on 7/24/13IP Casino Resort and Spa - BiloxiRating: 5 out of 5

I went thinking the show would be only OK at best but with the addition of David Aldo as the new lead singer the show was really amazing. They sounded as good as they did years ago. What a great way to spend a Saturday Night!!
