About

On September 14, Blonde Redhead will release their third album for 4AD, titled Penny Sparkle. It is another sonic twist in their already adventurous canon. Blonde Redhead is the trio of Kazu Makino, Simone Pace and Amedeo Pace.

Blonde Redhead has always been a band that innovates with each album. They challenge themselves with each recording situation, and the results have been stunning every time. Their music is always inspired by the same emotions, but their tastes and ways they choose to execute those emotions are constantly evolving. It was the early conversations about how to make this record that led the band to work with the up and coming Swedish duo Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid (Henrik von Sivers and Peder Mannerfelt) as producers on the record. Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck) also did production work on the record.

This really marks the first time that the band has worked in such a collaborative manner with their producers. Kazu says, "It was a real test - it shook everything up quite a bit." In fact, they were very much working outside of their comfort level, forced to move into directions that were completely unexpected, with many different opinions in the mix, which led to many challenges along the way. With friction however - there is also great art. And that's exactly what we have with Penny Sparkle. It's a truly gorgeous album, one that the band is VERY happy with. Although it took over a year to get there, the completion of the record lifted a huge weight off the band's shoulders.

The band initially spent six months in upstate New York working on the songs for the album. Despite the beauty of their upstate surroundings, the band felt very secluded. Simone said, "I wasn't too crazy about being up there, completely isolated - it was really beautiful, but without escape...we were working all the time, from the moment we got up to when we went to bed." They couldn't just take a break and go meet friends like they could at home in New York City, so they ended up feeling quite trapped and isolated - which is a feeling that clearly echoes through Penny Sparkle.

When it came time to record, they decided to do a trial run with Henrik and Peder. Kazu headed to Sweden to work on one song, "Here Sometimes" - to see how it might go. It was a little awkward for her - working away from Amedeo and Simone with people she barely knew in the middle of the grey winter. She really loved being in Stockholm, but she felt very isolated and looked forward to working on the record again back in New York with the twins and getting their thoughts on the collaboration.

Kazu returned to New York and the band spent time working with Drew Brown at The Magic Shop to record some basic tracks, and also to work on incorporating the electronic elements that Henrik and Peder had worked on. It was over Christmas and New Year's, and it was one of the coldest winters New York had seen. No one celebrated the holidays with their families - they just worked and worked - although at times felt like they weren't accomplishing anything. When they had more tracks recorded, Kazu went back to Sweden again, as it was decided that the collaboration would work.

Finally, in February, the band realized that they in fact had accomplished quite a bit. Everyone - the band, Drew, Henrik and Peder - met together in New York to finally all work in the same room - Sear Sound. This was just a few months before Walter Sear, the studio's owner, passed away; he helped them program the moog for the sessions. This is where the songs finally found their finished form. It took a long time, and it was very difficult, but the journey it took to create Penny Sparkle is well worth it.

The results of everyone's very hard work are found in the 10 songs that comprise Penny Sparkle. It's an emotional album full of discreet electronic flourishes, lush and sultry vocals and interesting sounds never before heard on a Blonde Redhead record. Sonically, the album sounds amazing on any stereo - which was also a goal of the bands. They really wanted it to sound perfect on any type of listening device.

It's no wonder that the band has some tensions to release after recording a record like this. In their spare time, Kazu and Amedeo both turn to horse riding, and Simone escapes on his motorcycle. Speaking of spare time, it's a wonder they have any at all. Between the year that it took to make Penny Sparkle, plus the soundtrack work that Simone and Amedeo have taken on, there really isn't much time to spare at all.

Simone first got into motorcycles about 10 years ago. Since then, he has educated himself about their inner workings and can fix his own bikes - Moto Guzzi being the preferred brand.

Kazu spends time in upstate New York, where she rides and takes care of horses, including her own. It's also where she met the album's namesake horse, Penny Sparkle. The stable at which Kazu keeps her horse is the same place where she had her riding accident in 2002. It's often surprising to some that she still rides after such a horrible accident, but it really brought her closer to her hobby and made her work even harder at it. Amedeo rides too, but he enjoys more of the training side of it.

Blonde Redhead have ended up with a thing of beauty in Penny Sparkle. Despite the rocky road they went down while making it, Kazu says, "I know that we have never made a record this way and if I could go back in time, I would do it exactly the same way again." And if the band is happy, then we should all be, too.

I was very happily surprised with the show. Was expecting it to be on the mellow side, but was very energetic. Only tinge I didn't like is that the guys from the band kept signaling the guy from the console to change the levels in their mics. The guy never got it right. Another thing I didn't like: they started playing a song and she stopped it and said "no wait, let's start again, this song has to be perfect"... However, good show, bottom-line.

Just keep them in your headphones

by RevengeanceDay on 10/17/13El Rey Theater - Los Angeles

23 is one of my favorite albums of all time, and I drove 2 hours on a Tuesday night to make the show. Unfortunately I can't really say I enjoyed it much. They were into their music but ignored the fans. There isn't much to see, and I strongly prefer the album versions of their songs. This is not a band to see live.

The band was absolutely amazing. The sound, set list, and onstage chemistry all made the show what it was.

    Kazu.. Will you marry me?

by krispyorama on 11/12/11El Rey Theater - L.A.

Rarely does a band sounds better than their album counterpart, but Blonde Redhead pulled it off. The L.A. crowd was very respectful with wailing to the jamz and silence during the tender moments of the set... The transitions were flawless/effortless/suprising the crowd was hanging on every pluck of the guitar and attempted to predict the next song as if their favorite was always next After the encore and after the velvetty red curtains closed, I waited in the front for a chance at a setlist. My hopes quickly diminished as I could see nothing past the curtains and security started rallying everyone towards the exits. I kept my eyes on the tiny gap that centered between the huge curtains... suddenly a blind hand reaches out and I jimmy thru security and snag the precious piece of paper from the gracious hand! Beautiful and spacious venue+++

    Very Sweet

    by Clashfan88 on 7/12/11Echoplex - Los Angeles

One of the best concerts I been to. The energy from the band was great and the sound was ok. The set was great and the opening bands I will say Great! Only thing I did not enjoy is the set was kind of short about an hour there was not enough Interaction with the crowd...and being said the crowd sucked. Everyone was just standing there not rocking out I mean maybe they could of played more of their upbeat songs...but I guess thats how Cali fans are...me bein born there but from nc I am use to ppl having fun in the crowds..all in all it was great except for those two stupid DJ's full of them selves playing uncool mashups of songs they made on their lame Macs.

The show was very good, with the exception of the band on before Blonde Redhead. I wasn't into their music, and from what I could tell, not many others were either unfortunately! Blonde Redhead was a great show, though, and I'd recommend it.

Blonde redhead is better live!!!! Amazing

by Reb9454 on 7/5/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

I love the vibe of this band. It's so rare that a band is better live than their recorded work! The only complaint is that the crowd wanted them to perform "misery is a butterfly" but they didn't! That was disappointing

    Getting There

by Hoppster on 7/4/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

This was a great concert. Strong set list for Blonde redhead. They started once again with their best song (IMHO) and opener Black Guitar. Set the mood for the night. Love their new album btw. The El Rey crowd was very pushy though. I have to admit that I couldn't thoroughly enjoy the concert because I caught a glimpse of the MOST attractive female at the show. short pinned up hair in the back, sexy secretary glasses, soft white shirt, very slender build, style was her middle name...ahem okay, so the show was great.

    Brilliant as Expected

by SwiftyHuzzah on 7/4/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Blonde Redhead are simply great. Love them. They played a great set of songs, mostly from Penny Sparkle and 23, but with a couple earlier tunes too. Sound was good. The El Rey is really great for seeing bands as the venue is small but not cramped, so everyone can see them clearly.

    Freaking Amazing

What an awesome show this guys put up, no flashy lights smoke and mirrors but pure good music. I will be sure to catch them anywhere I can.

    Freakin Awesome

by Sellysel on 12/19/10The Warfield - San Francisco

I've loved these guys for awhile now and hadn't really had a chance to hear the new album. Hearing all of them live was the best way to fall in love with all of them. The overall design was of stage and lighting was great, plus they came out for 3 encores I believe. Only thing that sucked was one of the security guards at the Warfield, he was a rude douchebag, completely the opposite of how the entire night was, not the bands fault. Can't wait to see them again!!

The quirks and the jam. Worth it!

by Originate on 11/29/10Ogden Theatre - Denver

So, let me start off by saying that Blonde Redhead is one of my favorite bands, but I keep my wits about me and am not star struck by seeing my favorite bands live and am not completely enamored by Blonde Redhead's new album. Having said that, both the band's stage presence and design were completely fantastic. I loved the lighting. Very nice equipment and very tastefully used. Considering this concert took place in Denver, the altitude messes with a lot of bands who aren't used to it. I have seen Blonde Redhead a few times before and can say that, although they seemed much more well rehearsed than previous times, I do think that they fell short in a few technical areas as far as audio levels and technical prowess. They came out of the gate very strong. The first five songs or so sounded fantastic. After that point the guitar work got a little sloppy and Kazu's vocals started cracking like in their older albums. I think that her occasional inability to hit those high notes is part of her sonic charm Kazu even apologized at one point that they didn't sound all that great. Everyone cheered. No one, including myself, seemed to think that they sounded bad, I am simply being picky. They played the most fantastic mix of their music (15 years of music) of any band I've seen. They didn't just hammer out the songs for their new album and go off stage. They came back for two encores and kept mixing up eras of their music. All and all I really enjoyed myself. And despite the minor issues, most of which I'm willing to chalk up to not being prepared for the altitude or just one-off quirks, I think the tickets are worth every penny. I will continue to be the first one in line for Blonde Redhead tickets, as they never cease to put on a fantastic show with a humble attitude. They set their expectations of themselves so very high that even when they fall a short they still amaze.

    Blonde Redhead-angelic!

by lancifer on 11/29/10Ogden Theatre - Denver

Wowie Zowie...the sound was perfect. you could hear every note from every instrument and Kazu's vocals......OMG, cant even think about it without getting all teary eyed from the beauty of it all! The brothers never missed a beat. Lots of improv that I wasn't expecting, that took many of the songs to new places. My wife thought that Kazu's voice was somehow being processed!...the sounds seemed super-human...Angelic

    10 out of 10!!!!

by nestoria on 11/27/10Showbox at the Market - Seattle

I have been a fan of Blonde Redhead since 2000, I have seen them live 4 times now. It has been a pleasure to watch & listen to them grow musically. Their performance at the Showbox Market was flawless, they sounded perfect. They had great energy and stage presence. Their setlist was meticulously crafted and flowed smoothly. The lighting was very innovative and inspiring. Their audio engineer also did an amazing job. I am an audiophile and very picky when it comes to live sound, and I would give the sound a 10 out of 10. Very clear, the reverb and delay settings on the vocals were perfect, and the dB level was exactly where a live show should be at; loud enough for the bass to churn your guts but not overpowering to the point of hurting you ears (or needing ear plugs).
