Black Stone Cherry was founded in 2001 by guitarist and lead vocalist Chris Robertson and John Fred Young, drummer and backing vocalist, who were long-time friends. Joining forces with Ben Wells on rhythm and lead guitars and Jon Lawhon on bass guitar, the band started out by playing gigs in their local town of Edmonton, Kentucky. John Fred Young is the son of rhythm guitarist Richard Young from the Grammy Award-winning band The Kentucky Headhunters, which Black Stone Cherry cite as one of their earliest influences, along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Muddy Waters and Cream. In their early days the band rehearsed and wrote in the same farmhouse that The Kentucky Headhunters had used as rehearsal space.
The band quickly gained a following for their live shows in their home state of Kentucky, and by 2005 they were signed to Roadrunner Records. The band released their first eponymously titled album in 2006 and were given a huge welcome back at their home town, where they performed for over 1500 fans. A live album recorded at London's Astoria in October 2007 was produced to mark the final show of their first international tour and was released in a limited edition of just 1,000 copies. In the same year the band won an award for Best New Band at the London Classic Rock Awards.
It is their tours for which the band is best known. An arena tour of the UK and Ireland in 2008 saw them take to the stage with Whitesnake and Def Leppard, with Black Stone Cherry as the opening act. May 2009 saw the band supporting Nickelback on the European leg of their Dark Horse Tour. They have supported Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bad Company and were the headline act at the 2013 Download Festival.
They put on a great show at the Blue Note the other night. Great band and a great venue!!
The concert was awesome, the venue was amazing! Would love to see others there as well!
Black Stone Cherry is awesome. Such a high energy group. Great bunch of guys who put on a hell of a show.
The whole experience was awesome. Del Mar Hall was a great venue. All three groups played great tunes.
I’ve seen these guys about 10 times in the last couple of years. Anytime they are within a days drive I’ll be at their concert. To say I’m a big fan is an understatement. They always give the crowd 110%. A bunch of really great guys. Their popularity has not made them too good to meet their fans whenever they can. I promise you will be an automatic fan after seeing them perform!🍒🎸🥁
These dudes put on such a good show. I'd never seen them live before but I really enjoyed this.
Smaller venue, makes it more intimate. Looking forward to going back. Loved the atmosphere. Bartenders were awesome. Everyone was friendly.
Awesome music and superior energy from this band!! they did not disappoint for sure!
Standing room only in this venue. Not sure why. But it sucked.
Saw Black Stone Cherry at Wally's in Hampton Beach. Venue was amazing! Small and intimate. The band was on 10 and awesome. This show is in my top 10 concerts I've been to! Can't wait to see someone else at Wally's!
It's been a while since I have seen them, they definitely didn't disappoint. I drove the 5 1/2 hours and it was well worth it! They sounded amazing, great performance for sure. Please come closer to Syracuse!
This was my fifth time seeing Black Stone Cherry live and as usual, they did not disappoint. High energy and awesome music made for an amazing show. Highly recommend seeing these guys if you are a rock/blues fan.
John Fred Young’s solo on drums blew me away. That whole band has so much talent. I’ve seen them 3 times in a couple months of months.
This was the first time in 3 years I have been able to see them. They were amazing as always. I think Steve was a great addition since Jon has stepped back. They put on a great show and they always bring really good bands on tour with them. The only down side was I felt they played for a shorter amount of time than I was used to in Wisconsin and Illinois. I always want them to play longer.
Black Stone Cherry awesome as always . the temple live is a great venue , very nice clean.
It was an amazing night with awesome music! I love Black Stone Cherry! They always bring it!
Seen them back in ‘08 and loved it! I remembered watching the drummer thinking he was going to smash through his drum set. This performance was even better, they continue to improve! Would definitely come see them again they rocked the house! And always…. BLAME IT ON THE BOOM BOOM!
Gave me faith in Rock N Roll again. Before the show my friend and I were saying that live music in general was not what it once was. The musicians dont look like musicians anymore. They are wearing their scubby street clothes or pajamas. Nobody dresses the part. The energy levels arent there. No head banging and jumping around like Eddie Van Halen or Angus Young. Theres no SHOWMANSHIP, AND SOMETIMES NOT EVEN A REAL MUSICIAN ON STAGE. NO REAL IMSTRUMENTS BEING PLAYED. Blasphemy I say!!! NO LONG HAIR AND HEADBANGING. JUST 3 NERDS WITH SKINNY JEANS AND FAKE CHUCKYS THAT ARE STUCK IN CEMENT IN FRONT OF A MIC THAT MAY OR MAY NOT EVEN BE TURNED ON... NOBODY APPEARING TO EVEN BE ENJOYING THEMSELVES. BUT THIS BAND DELIVERED. THEY CHECKED EVERY SINGLE BOX! WHO HAS MORE FUN THAN THESE DUDE'S??? AND SO MUCH TALENT. NOT ONE OF THESE GUYS IS LACKING IN ENERGY, RAW TALENT,SHOWMANSHIP, OR FUN FACTOR! AND EVERY ONE OF THEM ARE EASY ON THE EYES. THEY 100% GAVE ME BACK MIND BLOWING ROCK AND ROLL LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE.
BSC always puts on a killer show. Missed this one due to the tornado that touched down a few miles away, we had to take shelter. I thought for sure the show would be cancelled. But BSC did the most rock n roll thing ever and played anyways and I’m sad I missed it, did get to see a tornado though so that was cool. These guys are a band I don’t ever miss play when they’re in the area and I’ll for sure catch them next time.
They were great live! Great energy and sounded awesome🙂🎶 I would definitely see them again!
