The Black Jacket Symphony Live in Concert
Founded in 2009 by guitarist J. Willoughby and his partner and technical director Jason Rogoff, the Black Jacket Symphony comprises several groups of musicians dedicated to recreating a specific classic album. Though their live shows are built around performing covers of classic rock albums, in an interview with The Daily Times, Willoughby says that the Black Jacket Symphony is not a tribute band. Willoughby noted that the difference is that the Black Jacket Symphony is all about the music they're playing and not about the musicians themselves. Various Black Jacket Symphony ensembles have recreated an estimated 38 classic albums over the course of their careers.
For shows in 2018, they focused on seven classic recordings in particular -- The Beatles' Abbey Road, Queen's A Night at the Opera, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Journey's Escape, Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, and AC/DC's Back in Black. The Black Jacket Symphony's fanbase has grown over the years well beyond Birmingham. They now have a strong base in both Alabama (Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Chattanooga) and Kentucky (Lexington), while their local fanbase remains strong.
In 2014, to mark Black Jacket Symphony's fifth anniversary, Willoughby and friends presented a trio of concerts at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham, playing music that also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's U.S. debut, focusing on the albums Rubber Soul and Revolver.
In 2014 for an article on Alabama.com, Willoughby was asked about one of his memorable moments with the Black Jacket Symphony. He said, "Being on stage in front of a sold-out crowd at the Alabama Theater, which is a venue I put on a very high pedestal. The encore of the evening was 'Goodnight.' It's a song that I have been singing to my daughter every night before bed, and she was in the crowd of 2,200 people. The moment suddenly hit me, and I quickly had to learn to sing with the biggest lump in my throat that I have ever had."
This was my 1st time seeing BJS,and I am a lover of Fleetwood mac.I was totally impressed with them, they did an awesome job !
What an awesome show they put on Friday night. The entire band did a fantastic job and I will go see them again. They sounded just like Fleetwood Mac. This was the first show we have been too but will go again!!!!
I absolutely loved this concert! They played the whole album then came back and played a lot more of Fleetwood Mac's hits. The only thing that would have been better was if they had been in a air conditioned place. It was so hot at Sloss Furnace. I would recommend to anyone to check them out! They are very talented people.
Very good performance. Enjoyed the setting and the audience was great! Muscians were a little loud at times making the excellent vocals harder to hear. Sound system needed adjusting. I will definitely see this group again!
My husband and I are big fans of BJS and have been to almost every show. Unfortunately, the acoustics at this show and Sgt. Pepper's was lacking. At times, the women's vocals drowned out everything and were often out of tune. Luckily, there shouldn't be any female vocals with the Doors.
The show was outstanding very well done and Britt Hendrix really stood out as the high point of the show. Very well produced. I knew they would have to do "Tusk" but didn't know how they would pull it off - but they did. If any negative it would be the sound mix with the drums and bass at times overpowering the vocals.
The Black Jacket Symphony is awesome. The musicians they put together to recreate the albums they do are truly talented. Fleetwood Mac is one of my favorite bands and the performance they put on at Sloss Furnace was awesome. It could have only been better if it was put on at Sloss Furnace during the spring or fall when it isn't so hot. Should have had some food.
This show, was everything I could,ve hoped for it took me back to the days when I was a teenager, and I was still in highschool hanging out with my friends. It was AWESOME!!!
Fabulous concert!! Even my friends who are too young to know who Pink Floyd is were blown away by this excellent performance.
This was better than I ever could have expected. This band never missed a note, and if you had closed your eyes, you would have sworn it was Pink Floyd on stage. I will go back whenever these folks come back. Having seen the real deal, Pink Floyd, 2 times years ago, I can safely say that this was the bomb. Can't wait for Led Zepplin IV
Excellent recreation of Dark Side of the Moon. The music was spot on and the vocals were incredible. Especially the pretty little lady with great big voice. The second set was just as enjoyable. A Best of ... live.
Awesome Experience! The band was SPOT ON! The MPAC has the best sound system i have ever heard!
Another out standing show by the BJS. Played entire Dark Side of the Moon and then did the best of Pink Floyd. The whole band was exceptional.
To be honest, I was not sure if it was going to be good. 1 song in, I was blown away. I know they cover diffenent bands, but I would never label them a cover band. Very talented and very good. With most bands that do covers, there are "holes" in the songs. Not with these guys. The guys and gals in the band fill those holes. I never got to see Pink Flyod live but I know these guys were very very close. I will be there in Oct for Zep IV.
Took my husband to the concert ( who is a Pink Floyd junkie ). We were truley amazed how on spot these performers were with their voice, and musical instruments playing this music!!! We are definitely going again to the Led Zepplin concert in October!!!
The performance was fabulous!! I am telling everybody I know., Can't wait to see them again in October.
This was not just some cheesy cover band tribute. A nearly note-for-note perfect performance of a classic album. Exciting and beautiful...I'm going to see their next one: Led Zeppelin IV!
Really good musicians and vocalist. They started between 20 to 30 minutes late and I felt like they should have played a little longer but overall I really enjoyed it.
I wasn't sure how anyone could reproduce Pink Floyd exactly.... but, the Black Jacket Symphony did it!! The show was truly amazing!! The artist are so talented, I can't say enough about them. We will be purchasing tickets to the next Black Jacket Symphony, and we can hardly wait!
THIS WAS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST CONCERTS I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. I WOULD CERTIANLY GO TO ANOTHER BLACK JACKET SYMPHONY CONCERT IF I HAVE A CHANCE.
