The Black Jacket Symphony Live in Concert

Founded in 2009 by guitarist J. Willoughby and his partner and technical director Jason Rogoff, the Black Jacket Symphony comprises several groups of musicians dedicated to recreating a specific classic album. Though their live shows are built around performing covers of classic rock albums, in an interview with The Daily Times, Willoughby says that the Black Jacket Symphony is not a tribute band. Willoughby noted that the difference is that the Black Jacket Symphony is all about the music they're playing and not about the musicians themselves. Various Black Jacket Symphony ensembles have recreated an estimated 38 classic albums over the course of their careers.

For shows in 2018, they focused on seven classic recordings in particular -- The Beatles' Abbey Road, Queen's A Night at the Opera, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Journey's Escape, Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, and AC/DC's Back in Black. The Black Jacket Symphony's fanbase has grown over the years well beyond Birmingham. They now have a strong base in both Alabama (Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Chattanooga) and Kentucky (Lexington), while their local fanbase remains strong.

In 2014, to mark Black Jacket Symphony's fifth anniversary, Willoughby and friends presented a trio of concerts at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham, playing music that also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's U.S. debut, focusing on the albums Rubber Soul and Revolver.

In 2014 for an article on Alabama.com, Willoughby was asked about one of his memorable moments with the Black Jacket Symphony. He said, "Being on stage in front of a sold-out crowd at the Alabama Theater, which is a venue I put on a very high pedestal. The encore of the evening was 'Goodnight.' It's a song that I have been singing to my daughter every night before bed, and she was in the crowd of 2,200 people. The moment suddenly hit me, and I quickly had to learn to sing with the biggest lump in my throat that I have ever had."

Pink Floyd very good, but could have been better

by Goodscotch on 5/2/12Lexington Opera House - Lexington

Overall a very good experience but for Pete's sake, turn down the instruments a little! The lyrics at times were essentially drowned out.

    Uneven

by NotYourRealName on 5/2/12Lexington Opera House - Lexington

Very uneven performance. The first set wasn't top notch, though I admit bias as I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan. The second set was awesome, though, and if the whole thing had been that quality, I'd give the show itself 5 stars. The facilities were the other major issue. Having what amounts to a concession stand right next to the only bathrooms made for an almost impossible time navigating. Though, to the facilities' credit, they are beautiful.

    too much kick drum

by daddyman11 on 3/28/12Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

some one doesn't know how to mix sound. The house mix was terrible with too much kick drum. During the LZ IV performance in particular. I heard hardly any lead guitar. I could tell the guy was playing his butt off and being a guitarest I would have loved to heard his performance. That's what I came for. I don't expect my money back but would not hesitate to take it. I feel like I deserve it.

by Weinee on 3/27/12Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

The musicians were excellent. The attention to detail was extraordinary. I thought I was at a Led Zeppelin concert! I will be seeing them perform AC/DC in June and can't wait. I highly recommend these artists.

Lead Guitarist stole the show; Bryan Gibson

by Huntsvegas1 on 3/26/12Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

The show was very professional and the musicians were very talented. I thought they nailed most of the tunes as good as can be done. Bryan Gibson seemed to be very talented and I enjoyed his riffs the most. The drummer also tore it up. I'd like to see Black Jacket perform Pink Floyd should they ever come to Huntsville.

The Black Jacket Symphony is incredible!!

by lgordonal on 3/26/12Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

The whole band did an excellent job with all of the songs from Led Zeppelin IV and the greatest hits afterwards. The lead singer sounded even better than Robert Plant would have (and was cute, too!!) The lead guitar player was awesome and the harmonica player was really good too. We are looking forward to seeing them perform AC/DC "Back in Black" in June.

Led Zeppelin by Black Jacket Symphony

by N4VAE on 3/26/12Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

Absolutely amazing with world-class musicians. It was simply unbelievable, you had to be there. Without a doubt, ran as fast as you can to buy tickets to the next BJS show near you, or drive out of town if you have to, you won't regret it.

What a great show. This group is extremely talented. All you had to do was close your eyes and you would think you were listening to the original. Can't wait to hear their other shows.

Black Jacket Symphony Is A Must Experience!

by Rolltide0003 on 3/26/12Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

The concept is awesome. Take an album. Play it in its entirety from the beginning. Reproduce it note for note. Follow that set up with a barrage of classic hits from other albums. The musicianship is astounding and unforgettable.

Black Jacket Symphony VBC concert hall March 23

by Gig1953 on 3/25/12Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

Show was great and so was the music. I had seen BJS several times before, however, whoever was running the sound board for this show did a poor job of mixing the performance and bringing in the proper instrument in on time and loud enough. A really bad job!

This performance did not play "note for note, tone for tone" at all. The sound mix was poor so the quality of music even less appreciated.

    the modern symphony

by hitsmanj on 3/25/12Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

If you are not familiar with this group, they take select professional musicians and reproduce classic rock albums in a live setting. So far I have seen them perform The Who "Who's Next", ACDC "Back in Black", and just lately Led Zeppelin IV. Each time they have nailed the albums nearly note for note, and then after a short break they do greatest hits from the band who's album they just performed. I highly recommend seeing them, and look forward to seeing as they attempt new albums.
