About Birmingham Bulls

Birmingham Bulls at Pelham Civic Complex

The Magic City region is home to one of the top teams in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The Birmingham Bulls play out of the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Area in Pelham, Alabama, which has a capacity of 4,100. Coach Craig Simchuk, who captained the Bulls from 2017 to 2019, was promoted to head coach before the 2020-21 season after one year as an assistant coach. The Bulls are one of five teams playing in the SPHL, including the Huntsville Havoc, the Knoxville Ice Bears, the Macon Mayhem and the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

History of the Birmingham Bulls

Ice hockey has had a long tradition in Birmingham, Alabama, dating back to the original Birmingham Bulls, who played in the World Hockey Association from 1976 to 1979, and the Central Hockey League from 1979 to 1981. Art Clarkson, who brought the Birmingham Barons baseball team to the Magic City in 1981, purchased the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL in 1992 to become the Bulls, and sold the team in 1997. The ECHL Bulls moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 2001, and are now known as the Adirondack Thunder, with the Alabama Slammers of the WHA 2 playing in Birmingham for one season, in 2003-04.

Clarkson brought hockey back to Birmingham in 2017 with an expansion team retaining the classic Bulls name and ECHL logo. Jamey Hicks, who won the ECHL’s Most Valuable Player award in 1997-98 with the Bulls, became the new team’s first head coach. Clarkson resigned as managing general partner in 2019, and passed away later that year, but not before seeing the Bulls come into their own, with the Bulls finishing second in the regular season to the Peoria Rivermen for the William B. Coffey Trophy, and runners-up to the Huntsville Havoc in the 2019 President’s Cup finals.

It was fun, crowd wasn't exactly kid friendly

by C on 3/20/23Pelham Civic Complex - Pelham

The game and events around it were fun. I would definitely caution people before taking kiddos, the area we sat in was heavy with cursing and inappropriate language. Overall it was super fun for adults lol

    Underwhelming

by Last minute on 3/13/23Pelham Civic Complex - Pelham

The whole Vipers weekend was just strange. The crowd involvement wasn’t to the level that it normally is.

    Had a great time

by David on 3/1/23Pelham Civic Complex - Pelham

I havent been to a hockey game for years and my son has never been to one. We really enjoyed the game and the venue. It was clean , there was plenty of concession areas so you don't have to walk a mile to get anything. My only complaint and its petty . Not being able to pick my seats. We still had a phenomenal time.

Sat in the second row right next to the Bulls’ penalty box. Seats were amazing. Definitely worth paying more for those seats.

Nice night out for a family on a budget.

by BamaKurt on 2/15/23Pelham Civic Complex - Pelham

Nice crowd in a nice facility for a nice hockey game. Arena sets 4100 and tonight it was probably 3/4 full. It was a win for the home team. The venue was clean well staffed and very entertaining.

Horrible traffic to get to a great game

by Julie on 2/14/23Pelham Civic Complex - Pelham

The traffic getting into the facility was a nightmare that caused us to miss most of the first period, even though we got 1/2 mile from the rink over half an hour before game time. There were police directing traffic in the parking lot but not the road getting to it. The one lane going in was not sufficient. Once inside, the game was great, though. I love how they get the fans involved throughout.

    Need to educate the fans

by Hondo on 2/14/23Pelham Civic Complex - Pelham

This was the 5th Bulls game I've been to. I've been to hundreds of NHL, minor league and college hockey games over the years. I have to say the overall experience at the Bulls games is okay. However, you have a lot of fans who either don't know the proper etiquette of how to and when to move around during play or they know it and choose not to adhere to it. I couldn't tell you how many times a goal has been scored at the Bulls games I've been too and I totally missed it because someone was walking in my sight line. The Bulls don't do much of a job teaching the fans about staying in their seats during play. Also, I've seen the people who hold up the little stop signs at the seat entrances get totally ignored by fans who just walk right past them like they don't even exist. The Bulls organization should make more announcements to the fans about staying in their seats during game play.

    Fun for the whole family

by Solo on 2/12/23Pelham Civic Complex - Pelham

The kids enjoy all the off ice action and the fan participation. Reasonably priced for a night out. Most night are themed. Support your local ice hockey team.

    Could be a better experience

by Bulls fan on 1/31/23Pelham Civic Complex - Pelham

The Bulls need to do something in the arena to educate a lot of the fans who don't know about hockey etiquette. So many people at the games get up during play and move through the seating area. It's kind of funny actually. The game I went to on January 28 I had seats at center ice and missed 2 of the Bulls goals because people were walking up and down the isles during play. It's very frustrating. I probably will not attend any special giveaway games any longer. This was free jersey night and it was a full house which is unusual. A lot of people turned out to get the free jersey. A lot of those people I'm sure don't attend enough games to know any better.

Fun, but maybe not Family Fun

by Davistad44 on 11/21/22Pelham Civic Complex - Pelham

We really enjoyed our night at the Birmingham Bulls game, for the most part. Seats were cheap, food was affordable, and the game had a ton of action. Just beware if you're taking kids - not all fans care that kids are within earshot. Tons of vulgarities flying around.
