About Birmingham Bulls
Birmingham Bulls at Pelham Civic Complex
The Magic City region is home to one of the top teams in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The Birmingham Bulls play out of the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Area in Pelham, Alabama, which has a capacity of 4,100. Coach Craig Simchuk, who captained the Bulls from 2017 to 2019, was promoted to head coach before the 2020-21 season after one year as an assistant coach. The Bulls are one of five teams playing in the SPHL, including the Huntsville Havoc, the Knoxville Ice Bears, the Macon Mayhem and the Pensacola Ice Flyers.
History of the Birmingham Bulls
Ice hockey has had a long tradition in Birmingham, Alabama, dating back to the original Birmingham Bulls, who played in the World Hockey Association from 1976 to 1979, and the Central Hockey League from 1979 to 1981. Art Clarkson, who brought the Birmingham Barons baseball team to the Magic City in 1981, purchased the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL in 1992 to become the Bulls, and sold the team in 1997. The ECHL Bulls moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 2001, and are now known as the Adirondack Thunder, with the Alabama Slammers of the WHA 2 playing in Birmingham for one season, in 2003-04.
Clarkson brought hockey back to Birmingham in 2017 with an expansion team retaining the classic Bulls name and ECHL logo. Jamey Hicks, who won the ECHL’s Most Valuable Player award in 1997-98 with the Bulls, became the new team’s first head coach. Clarkson resigned as managing general partner in 2019, and passed away later that year, but not before seeing the Bulls come into their own, with the Bulls finishing second in the regular season to the Peoria Rivermen for the William B. Coffey Trophy, and runners-up to the Huntsville Havoc in the 2019 President’s Cup finals.
Each time I go the atmosphere has been good! Great service on everything
We had a terrific time at Bulls game highly recommend to others.
I wish I would have found this place years ago. I love hockey and I didn't realized that there was a decent hockey team close enough for me to enjoy live games at an arena again. I'll be going to games as much as I can.
Had a blast and didn't know there was a hockey following here! Found out about the Bulls by going to a University of Alabama Hockey Game, and was not disappointed! Highly Recommend!
We had an awesome time. Always enjoy watching the team especially #26.
This was our first ever hockey game. It was amazing, had so much fun. Player is really nice one of them signed my daughter's shirt.
We had a great time. First time attending a hockey game. It was action packed. Will definitely be going again.
The Birmingham Bulls organization works hard to make sure the game experience is fun for the whole family. It is also very affordable. Not to mention some pretty good hockey.
Spent the first period of the game trying to figure out seating with the staff because Ticketmaster sold one of our seats to another person as well. Once that was figured out we had a good time. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again
I gave the Bulls hockey game five stars. The value for the cost of the ticket is excellent. The fans were amazing friendly. Awesome people. The players did an excellent job before and after the game being fully engaged. I used to go to the Birmingham Bulls games back in the 90s when they were in the ECHL. Sometimes, I pick up a Preds game in Nashville. This was even better. I was right on the ice and able to see the players facial expressions, checks, and fights. After the game, there was a shirt off your back jersey raffle. The players were present to raffle off their own jerseys as well as coming up into the stands to interact with the fans. I highly recommend catching a game. I will be back.
Great game!! Lots of action and of course the Bulls won! Couldn’t ask for much better. Lifetime bulls fan and will be back for many more. GO BULLS!
I honest to God never thought I’d care about hockey. Never watched it growing up. At the very end of last season, my old roommate asked me to go to a game and I agreed. I have been hooked ever since. I now plan my weekends around games. I cannot get enough. The atmosphere is electrifying. The team is so good. Forever changed and in love with the Birmingham Bulls!
For the second year in a row I arrived at the venue only to find a giant carnival set up in the parking lot. With no parking at the venue and unwilling to park more than a mile away and ride a bus I was unable to attend the event I payed for. You shouldn’t sell me a ticket if the parking I’m always used to isn’t going to be available. Would a disclaimer kill you?
I haven't been to a Bulls game since the 80s. THe Pelham Civic Complex is awesome! I had a really good time. the fans are great! Plan on going back very soon!
We love the Bulls, but the parking situation was not ideal. We always park in the area next to the complex, but due to the fair we were told we had to be bussed there from 2 mi away and park our car elsewhere. If anything, the people that showed up for the fair should have been bussed over. Not the ticket holders for a major team. That’s not cool.
The wife and I had a blast watching this team. The arena being a little smaller than most really takes the game to another level. The crowd is as entertaining as the game. Definitely going back
Our 1st time attending Hockey here in Birmingham it was an extremely., fun night, and the level of play far exceeded our expectations. We plan to buy season tickets for next season.
The fast paced boomerang sport had my eyes glued to the flying hockey puck every moment while it was on the ice rink.
It was fun & it was a great experience. I got there too late to get the giveaway Hawaiian Bulls shirt. Very disappointed
Our family loves coming to these games, they are not too expensive, they are always exciting, they are easy to get to. We have 3 boys between ages 4-8 and they beg to come back again and again to cheer on the Bulls!
