About Birmingham Bulls

Birmingham Bulls at Pelham Civic Complex

The Magic City region is home to one of the top teams in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The Birmingham Bulls play out of the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Area in Pelham, Alabama, which has a capacity of 4,100. Coach Craig Simchuk, who captained the Bulls from 2017 to 2019, was promoted to head coach before the 2020-21 season after one year as an assistant coach. The Bulls are one of five teams playing in the SPHL, including the Huntsville Havoc, the Knoxville Ice Bears, the Macon Mayhem and the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

History of the Birmingham Bulls

Ice hockey has had a long tradition in Birmingham, Alabama, dating back to the original Birmingham Bulls, who played in the World Hockey Association from 1976 to 1979, and the Central Hockey League from 1979 to 1981. Art Clarkson, who brought the Birmingham Barons baseball team to the Magic City in 1981, purchased the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL in 1992 to become the Bulls, and sold the team in 1997. The ECHL Bulls moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 2001, and are now known as the Adirondack Thunder, with the Alabama Slammers of the WHA 2 playing in Birmingham for one season, in 2003-04.

Clarkson brought hockey back to Birmingham in 2017 with an expansion team retaining the classic Bulls name and ECHL logo. Jamey Hicks, who won the ECHL’s Most Valuable Player award in 1997-98 with the Bulls, became the new team’s first head coach. Clarkson resigned as managing general partner in 2019, and passed away later that year, but not before seeing the Bulls come into their own, with the Bulls finishing second in the regular season to the Peoria Rivermen for the William B. Coffey Trophy, and runners-up to the Huntsville Havoc in the 2019 President’s Cup finals.

  • Enjoyed game - seats not the best

by Muttkirk on 2/6/24Pelham Civic Complex - PelhamRating: 3 out of 5

The seats we purchased were partially blocked by a beam. Could only see half of the rink. There was no way to know this when purchasing. I don't think those seats should be sold. Otherwise, we enjoyed the experience and will return.

    GOOOOOOO BULLSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Obstructed view

by Bulls fan on 11/27/23Pelham Civic Complex - PelhamRating: 1 out of 5

I bought three seats for this game. The seats were at center ice at the top row in section 104. Two of the seats had an obstructed view. You could not see the goal to the right of the seats. I would have been okay with had there been a warning of the view when I selected the seats. However there was no notice of an obstruction so I wasn't happy at all. On top of that I was bringing my nephew to his first game so this kinda ruined that experience.

  • Lots of fun in a tight place

by Jessica on 11/27/23Pelham Civic Complex - PelhamRating: 4 out of 5

The seating was very cramped. I hadn't been to the Pelham civic center in years. If you are a larger person I would suggest not going to a hockey game. The game itself was fun. The food prices were decent.

I’ve taken my family to go see the Bulls play several times over the past couple years. The last game we went to on 11/24, it was a bit wild. I’m surprised how close the fans sit to the ice & players. It does make for an exciting experience, however there were a couple times where the fans went a bit overboard. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always fun to yell at the opposing team but there should be some restraint. We sat right behind the opposing teams bench and throughout the game there were 2 drunken sailors chirping at the coach and players. The crowd sits so close to the bench, it’s intimidating to say the least. I think the fans of Birmingham overall are some of the best in the SPHL, but you always have your NUTS who stand alone. I was just shocked and on edge when the fans were able to beat & pound on the glass the entire game. At some point the personnel should take control. Again, I’m all about having a good time and booing the other team, but for how close you’re able to sit to the opposing players, there should be some protocol to prevent this from happening. My fear is there will be a coach/player in the near future who responds to being cursed/yelled at & at that point, it will get out of hand quickly. I don’t want that to happen but it’s going to get to that point if someone doesn’t do something about this.

  • The best time!!!

I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into when I came for this game but my expectations were beat clear out of the water. I had such an awesome time and so did my best friends. I definitely plan on being back several times!!

Well run minor league hockey game with great food and drink options. Great experience for what the small civic center can do. Perfect for families or childless adults.

  • Much better experience

by Bulls fan on 4/19/23Pelham Civic Complex - PelhamRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to several games this year and in all of them a tremendous amount of the folks there obviously either don't know not to move around during play or they just don't care. I have to say the other night during the playoff game it was much better, and I actually heard the PA guy make an announcement prior to the game to tell folks not to be up and moving around while the puck is in play. I really enjoy going to the games and I hope this aspect of the experience continues to get better. Keeping my fingers crossed.
