Billy Joel Concert Review @AT&T Park, San Francisco, 090515
It was a beautiful clear late summer day during Saturday of Labor Day weekend at AT&T Park. With the exception of Transbay BART being out of service, in all other respects the perfect setting for an outdoor concert to a near sold out audience….so much so that Billy added a second show on Sunday afternoon.
Gavin DeGraw-(from South Fallsburg, New York)(“I Don’t Want to Be” (theme from tv series One Tree Hill), “Not Over You” was the warm-up band for Billy Joel with his 40 minute set. The two hit DeGraw is a shadowy resemblance to a much younger Billy Joel from the early 70s who moved around a lot on stage and even into the audience during his brief set and who is doing whatever (and appearing wherever he can) so he can to build his own mIf you have seen Billy Joel at other times during his long career you would notice that during this two hour set he did not get out of his chair to the point I was beginning to wonder if he had lost use or partial use of his legs. It was not until his one encore that he actually got up, moved around and started acting like the old Billy Joel. Billy joked when he came out that he was Billy’s father and Billy had taught him everything he knew. Other noticeable changes were the presence of Santa Clause-like reading spectacles that looked like they were specially made to be as transparent as possible but still hard to miss in the glaring lights. Billy also appeared to be quite winded from his performances—not surprising after decades of smoking and heavy drinking. He joked about it with throat spray before singing “Innocent Man”. There were several songs that became his calling card over the past two decades that were noticeably absent…including “I Go to Extremes”, “Prelude/Angry Young Man”, and Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway). Two of my personal favorites were also excluded: “Pressure” and “Only the Good Die Young.” Billy also seemed during the performance to be trying out songs from other artists as if to test for an album compilation. But hey, even Rod Stewart is back to writing his own music, and hopefully Billy will too.
Billy (age 66) recently got married again on July 4th (Alexis Roderick, 34) and had a baby girl Della Rose Joel during August. He felt confident enough in his personal life to once again sing “Uptown Girl” during his encore (a song he said he would never sing again after divorcing Christie Brinkley). During his regular set he sang a stirring rendition of “Just the Way You Are” that he has not performed in many years. But the tone was set with the pre-amble song theme song from The Natural, followed by his opening song “Big Shot”. The big shot natural was back with his life back together, followed by “My Life” and “Keeping the Faith”. As mentioned before, Billy seemed searching for new things to play and included in his set “Sometimes A Fantasy” (from Glass Houses album), “Zanzibar” (from 52nd Street album), “Say Goodbye to Hollywood (from Turnstiles album), “The Entertainer” (from Streelight Serenade album), and “No Man's Land” (from River of Dreams Album). Billy closed his regular set with an audience participation version of “Piano Man”. His one encore closed with staples of ‘Its Still Rock and Roll to Me” and “You May Be Right” (from Glass Houses album). Clearly the audience would have liked him to play on. As his only west coast appearance this year, we hope Billy will return again to a fan base eager to hear The Natural play gain.
