About

Billy Gibbons in Concert

From his awesome beard to his massive riffs and gravelly voice, Gibbons has been carving out his own place in music history for the past 50 years. Born in 1949 in Houston, Texas, to a father who was a concert pianist and orchestra conductor, Gibbons rebelled by picking up the electric guitar at age 13. As a teen he played in a number of bands, striking gold as his group The Moving Sidewalks penned the Doors-esque "99th Floor," which became a hit in Houston. Oh, and they opened for Jimi Hendrix during his first American headlining tour. Those experiences would give Gibbons the fire he needed going forward, as he would form ZZ Top in 1969. With the rough-riding, groundbreaking group, he found incredible mainstream success throughout their numerous platinum-selling releases (‘Degüelo,' ‘Eliminator,' ‘Afterburner'), chart-scorching singles ("La Grange," "Gimme All Your Lovin," "Sleeping Bag"), and numerous awards and distinctions, including an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

Gibbons' solo career took off late in life, with his first solo LP dropping in 2015. ‘Perfectamundo' delivered everything one could desire from a Gibbons solo album: Afro-Cuban rhythms, grungy blues licks, and a Tom Waits-flavored general dirtiness. Its follow-up, the energetic ‘Big Bad Blues,' was released three years later, in 2018.

As a collaborator, Gibbons has lent guitar bliss to countless big-time musicians and their songs, including Queens of the Stone Age's "Burn the Witch," B.B. King's "Tired of Your Jive" (from ‘B.B. King and Friends'), Nickelback's "Rockstar," Hank Williams III's "Trashville.' In addition, he's performed in a ton of blockbuster supersessions, like when he joined Lou Reed and Jim Jarmusch to play with The Raconteurs at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, or when he played Skynyrd's "Free Bird" on ‘The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien' alongside Ben Harper, Beck, Will Ferrell, and Conan himself.

  • Billy Gibbons Rocked the House

Shelly and I saw the show with my good friend of almost 50 years and his wife. Row H on the floor. Band was tight with Billy, the drummer from Guns & Roses, a phenomenal left handed guitarist and Ellwood who played a great guitar and harmonica. Blues, classic ZZ Top classics and covered Whole Lotta Love with drummer singing.

  • BILLY F GIBBONS, ENOUGH SAID !!!!!!!

by SfTulL on 10/23/18The Pageant - St. LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Mr. Gibbons rocked the Pageant thur. night. Going in I thought it was going to be a more blues show, but to my surprise it was a mix of the new album, some ZZ songs, and some nice covers . Mat hits:em hard, and Austin does a fine job to. Billy is always a class act. It was nice to see him in a small venue again, worth every penny If you get the chance, GO.

Cool in every sense of the word, Billy Gibbons rocked the Pageant. A better blues based rock n roll show would be damned hard to find.

Wife and I decided to attend to hear the music but to also check out the venue. Both exceeded our expectations. We loved it!!

  • Billy Gibbons at Pageant in St Louis

by Anonymous on 10/21/18The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Great night of Big Bad Blues with the Reverend Billy G. He and band were in great form. Strong mix of new tunes from latest album plus several ZZ classics, and a few cool covers thrown in. Billy had great energy throughout show, told a few short stories, but mostly kept the tunes coming. Played slide for one or two tunes in middle of set which was cool. His band was tight, with the drummer (from GNR) particularly impressive. Sound mix was strong, and venue is awesome for upclose view of an icon in action. If this show comes to your town, do yourself a favor and get a ticket.

  • AMAZING Billy F Gibbons

Whether playing with his Little Band from Texas or flying solo Billy is Never a disappointment, but the Big Bad Blues tour stop at the Pageant in St. Louis far exceeded my high expectations. An excellent blend of his new solo efforts, ZZ Top classics and a surprise or two made it the best concert for any genre.

  • Amazing

As a lifelong ZZ Top fan, I was never able to see them perform. I saw the next best thing. Billy and company rocked! I was so happy they played my favorite ZZ Top song too!

Great show! Billy really is one with his guitar. Billy played some songs from ZZ and both his solo albums plus an added bonus...one from Led Zeppeln. It was a fun show in an awesome smaller venue that makes i more intimate.

Awesome concert. Was going for a couple songs....stayed the whole thing. Very good

  • Billy was good, show not great

by Dehkuf on 10/21/18The Pageant - St LouisRating: 4 out of 5

I went expecting to hear Billy belt out some good old blues from the new record, and some songs from the ZZ catalog and that’s what I got. That being said, the show was good not great. Didn’t care much for the other guitar player, and the show was spotty. Blue Jean Blues is a great ZZ blues song, and was expecting a rousing version of it, but he only sang a couple of lines from the song. It was great to see Billy play in a small venue, the acoustics were awesome and his guitar playing was on point. Just disappointed with the show. Played for @ an hour and a half

  • BFG - great show in smaller venues

by MuzicalMatt on 10/21/18The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

The St Louis show this week was just great. Billy played a bit bit more ZZ Top than I expected but jammed out like a blues band with his excellent band. It’s really spectacular to see him in a club setting and he obviously enjoys it! Go see this tour if you can! You can see Billy 3 times for what one Bonamassa or Sting/Shaggy show will cost you ;-) it’s a fabulous deal!

  • He can play

Fantastic show. I have been to a lot of shows and this was one of the best shows I have seen

  • The big bad blues tour

by bunkz on 10/20/18Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior LakeRating: 5 out of 5

This is a Billy F Gibbons at his best the new songs where good but the band really shined on the ZZ Top hits the encore was outstanding with the drummer Matt Sorum ripped the skins up on the cover of a Led Zeppelin classic Whole Lotta Love which he also sang great getting almost everyone on their feet dancing to the beat.
