  • Good but falls short

by CasuallFan2 on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

The talented cast and crew makes this worth your while. However, I was initially drawn by the involvement of Elton John with the musical score and a story line that promised passion and human interest. I was disappointed on both counts. I realize that the intent is to entertain and to this end it hits the mark. The young dancer J.P. Viernes is a remarkable talent with a very bright future in front of him. I would recommend this production to anyone but I wouldn't recommend seeing it more than once.

  • Hoped for better

by chitown2 on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

This play kept my attention for the nearly 3 hours it lasted, but I was disappointed in the music, especially considering Elton John's connection. None of the songs seemed very meaningful and many were just related to the political connection of the miners' plight. There weren't too many significant solos and hardly any significant female performances. The young man who played Billy Elliot did a fantastic job in his role though.

  • Super

by boothbay on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We thought Billy Elliot was really good. My son is graduating in theatre production and enjoyed all of the technical things. My husband isn't as much into musicals as the rest of us, but he said it was his favorite of all that we have seen. I didn't find out till after we bought the tickets, that the actual opening isn't until April. I was under the impression that it was Thursday, the 18th. Even if this was a practice with an audience, it was very good. Thumbs Up!

  • Billy Elliot - A Major Disappointment

by BillChicago on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

I went with my girlfriend to see Billy Elliot after seeing the movie and listening to all the hype with very high expectations, but was terribly disappointed. This was an early preview in Chicago, so perhaps it may improve with time. The show was way too long, over-produced, poorly scripted, and acted with not a single memorable song. It was hard to believe that someone with Elton John's talent could have written the music. Many of the lyrics were very sentimental and sometimes laughable. None of the actors stood out. It was a very poor version of the movie which managed to tell the fascinating and inspiring story much more effectively. Much of the humor fell flat and they made an odd decision to overemphasize the "queer" and "poof" jokes. So how was the dancing? that was terrific and there were some extended dance scenes that were breathtaking. But even some of those - like Billy's dance with his cross-dressing friend - were marred by the odd addition of large dancing dresses. It was a shame that the talent of the young boys were undermined by such a poorly written and produced musical. Unless this production improves, it is not worth the money and you would be better off watching the movie.

  • Dancing was good

by joekus1 on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Not as good as expected. Difficult to relate to the characters, sound system wasn't the best, E John's music not his best and certainly not enough to save the musical. Talented dancers were commendable, sadly also not enough to make it worth seeing (definitely not a second time).

  • Billy Elliot was engaging

by obdobion on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

The special part was the young actor on stage for the first time. He was very talented and actually made the show. The show in general was fun to watch with only average music and lyrics. The at times heavy British accent was difficult to understand. There were moments of audience participation and acknowledgment that added to the enjoyment. However, although I did not find it offensive, the language was a bit over the top, ef-ing this and ef-ing that. And the smoking was odd, but probably accurate of the place and time, it stunk up the theater. And the most egregious assault to my sensibilities occurred when the actor pointed a loaded (tennis ball) air gun directly in the face of a very small child. Even if the angle of my viewing (straight-on) made this only appear to be directly in the child's face, I found it disturbing, highly unnecessary in that it added nothing to the plot. This must be taken out of the show.

  • Billy Elliot was fabulous!

by LimestoneCowgirl on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I had heard the dancing was great, but the story was also hearthwarming. I highly recommend this show. I'm inspired to learn a bit more of the actual history.

  • I thought I would love this play...

by Anonymous on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

...but I did not. We were in the nose bleed section which probably did not help. I had seen the movie and liked it. I expected more dancing and singing and less preachy content. I also got somewhat bored and thought it was dragging on a bit. The oriental theatre in Chicago is beautiful and worth a visit in itself.

  • Chicago Production lives up to Broadway!

by SWANNY88 on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Billy Elliot on Broadway last June and again in Chicago yesterday. The Chicago production is very bit as good as the NYC production. This show emotionally grabs you from the moment the house lights go down until you are in tears giving a standing ovation. I can not wait to see this again!! Simply Put...YOU MUST SEE THIS SHOW!

  • I love Billy Elliot!!

by Marisa923 on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Billy Elliot is one of my all-time favorite movies so I was excited to see the show. I didn't think it would live up to the movie but it did!! I totally loved it. Some parts are different but the story stays pretty true to the film. Cesar Corrales did a great job as BIlly. I saw him slip twice on stage but it didn't phase him at all. I also really enjoyed Keean Johnson as Michael. Overall I had a great expreience and would recommend this show to my friends!

  • Billy Elliot is a hit!

by RA691 on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I had a seat in orchestra row A. Great view of the actors and the action. Unfortunately, it was a little low to see all of the dancing footwork. (I think the lower balcony would be better.) But the performers were great!

  • language language language

The dancing, singing, acting were top rate but the language was awful. I am glad that my children were not with me.

  • Amazing young talent

by jmp325 on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Very good show. The kid playing billy that show was truly gifted. A great singer, a great dancer and a great actor. I can't wait to see him perform as an adult.

  • Unprofessional

by friend1 on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I highly anticipated this event and was disappointed. Granted, when the director came onstage prior to the performance to offer explanation/disclaimers to prep us psychologically for the actor playing Billy, I thought then that this could be bad. Yet, the actor who was debuting in the role did a fine job. He was nervous and didn't have stage presence, but he's only 12 and he technically performed all of the dance scenes without any obvious problem. Then, just before the "Angry dance" the computer malfunctioned and the scene was stopped, re-set, more explanation from the director, etc. There were other malfuncitons as well with lighting and sound. So, I guess that can happen in any performance; yet, in my 40 years of attending Broadway plays and performances all over the country and abroad this was my first such experience where the play was actually stopped. I thought the adult actors were good, but were playing down so the Billy actor could be showcased? The audience was very kind -- lots of applause, encouragement to Billy, and a lot of forgiveness. Maybe, the point of Billy is to encourage young actors and not to produce a truly professional performance.

  • I was disappointed

by Lamumba on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

This was not one of my favorite plays. The second part was better than the first part. The child who played Billy Elliot was excellent. Would I see it again? No. I saw "Wicked" twicve and loved it. Several other musicals were wonderful right from the beginning. I just couldn't get into this one.

  • Excellent play, will see again!!!

Great story, excellent music... Heavy Brittish content, may be difficult for those not familiar with understanding of Brittish main stream lingo to understand.

  • Incredible dancing

by ChgoFan on 3/21/10Ford Center for the Performing Arts - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Main character, Bill Elliot was an amazing dancer, especially for his age. He was on stage almost all the time and to be able to perform at that level at such a young age is quite remarkable.
