Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament

Played annually since 1998, the Big Ten men's basketball tournament is a late but welcome addition to the national slate of conference tourneys. The tournament usually concludes on Selection Sunday, with the winner getting an automatic berth to the NCAA tourney.

The Big Ten tournament is always played on a neutral site. Over the years it's bounced between Chicago and Indianapolis, except in 2017 and 2018, when the host sites were the Verizon Center in Washington, DC, and Madison Square Garden in New York City, indicating the conference's expansion to the Eastern Seaboard.

Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament History

So far, the tournament belongs to the Big Ten's traditional powerhouses. Michigan State has claimed a plurality of the championships, with six: 1999, 2000, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2019. As an official matter, Ohio State has won four — 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2013 — though the Buckeyes also took home the 2002 crown, only to have it vacated due to NCAA sanctions. As befitting the best team in one of the toughest conferences in the nation, the winner of the tournament has often gone on to play in the Final Four — seven times in all.

The final rarely produces a major upset — a No. 1 or No. 2 seed has captured the title in most tournaments played since 1998 — but there have been some March Madness moments in the tournament here and there. In the tourney's second year, the bottom-seeded Illinois Fighting Illini, having won three conference games all season, made an improbable run to the championship game, largely thanks to Cory Bradford's sharpshooting. They beat No. 23 Minnesota, No. 17 Indiana and No. 11 Ohio State, finally succumbing to No. 2 Michigan State in the final. In 2008, the Illini, seeded 10th out of 11 teams, went on another tear, losing to Wisconsin in the title game. In 2017, the eighth-seeded Michigan Wolverines became the lowest seed to win the Big Ten tourney, knocking off Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota and Wisconsin along the way.

    great experience

by BuckeyeJLS on 3/13/12Bankers Life Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

Big Ten basketball tourney provides lots of excitement especially if your team is playing - and even more if they win. Ticket prices aren't excessive and you get to see 2 games for the price - except for the finals. Indianapolis provided plenty of area eateries, pubs , and reasonable $10 parking. Also a clean neighborhood to walk and see the sights. This was also family-friendly. There were tickets on sale on Saturday and Sunday in the arena for the finals and you eliminate the extra fees of buying on-line.

Had a great time as usual. Not too excited about next year in Chicago...love Chicago as a city but United Center is not centralized like Indy's fieldhouse is.

    Mens Big ten

by clergy101 on 3/12/12Bankers Life Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

overall it was great! two thoughts: 1) should have more for each school - bands playing outside when it is nice like this weekend - basketball team autographs/greetings - not just on Sundays (some people go to church and cant come) 2) food should be cheaper. this is not professional sports but college. ps...you would sell more and make a lot more money by lowering the price. a hotdog doesn't cost $5 (i never bought one and i am the king of hotdogs)

    Big Ten BBall Tourney

by Woody54 on 3/12/12Bankers Life Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

Attended Session 1 games only. Although not the Powerhouses, some good ball. Although sold out, only about 2/3 of the seats were filled, providing ample opportunity to improve our view. BankersLife Fieldhouse is a world class venue for Bball,.

    Indy was awesome!!

by BigBlueGuru on 3/12/12Bankers Life Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

We had a group of nine head down to the Big Ten basketball tournament in Indianapolis, and it was fantastic! Indy is a great town for that type of event, with all the restaurants and bars within walking distance of Conseco Fieldhouse. The arena is great - we sat higher in the upper deck, and could still see everything clearly. A must-see for any Big Ten fan!

    Mindblowing basketball

by kimh1 on 3/12/12Bankers Life Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

It is four days of nothing but basketball, friendship and good food. It is so great to immerse yourself in the competition of the game, whether your own team wins or not. There is always a team to cheer for because one game always has some influence on how your own team will be affected by the outcome of the game. We come every year but are disappointed that it will be in Chicago next year. We don't think the town will be as user friendly as Indianapolis has been. Chicago's traffic is so much more difficult and the layout is just not as easy. It was tremendous fun this year, even though my team did not play well, nor did any of my choices win.

    BigTen is Best

by Illibuck on 3/11/12Bankers Life Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

There is no better basketball in the nation than the BigTen, and the tournament is the best the BigTen has to offer. On top of this, Indianapolis is a terrific venue for the tournament. The field house is surrounded by reasonably priced parking, good restaurants, and everything is within walking distance. I would recommend the entire experience to anyone.

    Great Experience

by BuckyBadger2012 on 3/11/12Bankers Life Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

The entire experience was really great. The venue was perfect for the event, from the inside of the arena to the streets surrounding it. Also the ushers were especially friendly especially the usher in Section 232. My only complaint was that it was not clearly stated (to me or my friends at least) that students needed to bring their student ID's for admission with their student tickets. I did have mine but some others I was with ran into issues. However the tournament staff was friendly and fair in handling this issues and all of us were still able to enjoy the games.

    Men's Big Ten Tourney

by AnReed on 3/11/12Bankers Life Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

Horrible seating(the very top row)-everyone around us purchased their tickets around the same time, yet you could go to the box office at the stadium and get better seating or buy from a vendor on the street. Definitely will need to rethink or purchasing options if we go next year.
