Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament
Played annually since 1998, the Big Ten men's basketball tournament is a late but welcome addition to the national slate of conference tourneys. The tournament usually concludes on Selection Sunday, with the winner getting an automatic berth to the NCAA tourney.
The Big Ten tournament is always played on a neutral site. Over the years it's bounced between Chicago and Indianapolis, except in 2017 and 2018, when the host sites were the Verizon Center in Washington, DC, and Madison Square Garden in New York City, indicating the conference's expansion to the Eastern Seaboard.
Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament History
So far, the tournament belongs to the Big Ten's traditional powerhouses. Michigan State has claimed a plurality of the championships, with six: 1999, 2000, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2019. As an official matter, Ohio State has won four — 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2013 — though the Buckeyes also took home the 2002 crown, only to have it vacated due to NCAA sanctions. As befitting the best team in one of the toughest conferences in the nation, the winner of the tournament has often gone on to play in the Final Four — seven times in all.
The final rarely produces a major upset — a No. 1 or No. 2 seed has captured the title in most tournaments played since 1998 — but there have been some March Madness moments in the tournament here and there. In the tourney's second year, the bottom-seeded Illinois Fighting Illini, having won three conference games all season, made an improbable run to the championship game, largely thanks to Cory Bradford's sharpshooting. They beat No. 23 Minnesota, No. 17 Indiana and No. 11 Ohio State, finally succumbing to No. 2 Michigan State in the final. In 2008, the Illini, seeded 10th out of 11 teams, went on another tear, losing to Wisconsin in the title game. In 2017, the eighth-seeded Michigan Wolverines became the lowest seed to win the Big Ten tourney, knocking off Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota and Wisconsin along the way.

Disappointingly, the cancel announcement came half way through the first game (Minn vs NW). This was shaping up to be one of the better Big Ten basketball tournaments.
Pandemic wiped out all hopes of Big Ten seniors from experiencing what may have been the tournament of all BIG10 tournaments. BIG10 officials should have let the tournament continue, even if without the general audience in to cheat their teams.
Great to have big ten come to NYC. I hope they return every year. Tickets were a little pricey but not outrageous - wish ticketmaster would have released their individual days a little sooner - I ended up going thru another site to get one day of the tourney and ticketmaster for the second date. MSG a great venue for college basketball. Please return.
Really enjoyed the Big 10 tourney at the Garden this year. Nice venue, helpful staff. A very positive experience overall.
Seats as advertised. The event lived up to the hype. Definitely enjoyed myself.
Exciting to be in the heart of Manhattan at the legendary Madison Square Garden. A very impressive (massive) venue. Great staff made it easy to navigate.
I had a great time being about to see Big Ten Teams live and I so glad the Garden does this event next year because I will go again
Great opportunity to see big time collegiate basketball at the worlds most famous arena
Good atmosphere and very reasonable ticket prices. Look forward to attending next year.
Beautiful and clean venue. Easy and affordable parking. Bob was the staff member in my section. He was friendly and I noticed him provide quality customer service for the people in our section. I would like to return if MSU plays there in the future. Don't let the B1G hang ads on the back board and below the basket when the guys cut the nets. I couldn't see. Like they'd listen....
Michigan State won!!! so proud to be a spartan and witnessed the moment of history, truly AMAZING!!!
The event itself was awesome. The seats we had were terrible.
Love the B1G Tourney and Indianapolis is a wonderful city!
Most games very close and very exciting. Great area of the city for such an event.
It was the Bombdotcom. I really enjoyed both games.
Awesome time, great games, especially when your team wins!!!!!
Great city and great venue. My father and I had an amazing experience.
The atmosphere outside even was great. Love Indy and all that they did for this event. If it ever leaves Indy that will be a mistake.
What a great way to pay for 1 ticket to see 2 great games. This was a fabulous place and city for the tournament. Must experience if basketball and Big Ten fan at least once in your life.
