The band made their premiere release with the Sistah Punk EP (2014). Their next release came with the Crooked Room EP (2016). Soon after, Big Joanie released their first full-length studio album with Sistahs (2018). Their next album came a few years later with Back Home (2022).

Big Joanie Live in Concert

Big Joanie was initially formed in 2013 in London by Stephanie Phillips and Chardine Taylor-Stone after the two met at Imkaan, a Black feminist organization. A few months after they met, Phillips made a post online looking for people to join a Black punk band, to which Taylor-Stone volunteered swiftly thereafter. Phillips plays the guitar and performs as a vocalist and Taylor-Stone plays the drums and performs as a vocalist as well. The band was formed with bassist and vocalist Kiera Coward-Deyell. In early 2017, Coward-Deyell moved to Scotland and was replaced by current bassist Estella Adeyeri. Adeyeri had previously known Phillips from playing in the gig circuit. Big Joanie takes their punk ethos seriously, with the band playing in a straight line onstage, breaking up the usual stage hierarchy. Taylor-Stone not only plays the drums standing up, but has also been teaching herself the drums throughout her time with the band in order to develop independently from heavily structured Western musical ideas. In an interview with Them she explained, "You're teaching yourself to go by what you love." In the same interview with Them, Taylor-Stone elaborated on her beliefs that being punk extended far beyond one's attitude, and that she preferred an artist that spoke their mind and stuck to their principles over one who did not: "That, to me, is more punk rock than anybody just jumping about onstage and shouting." On Spotify, Big Joanie has more than 59,000 listeners a month. Their most popular track, "Fall Asleep," has been streamed more than 940,000 times. Their next most popular song, "Cranes in the Sky," has been streamed more than 640,000 times.
