Big Fish was a truly terrific show

by thatsawrap on 5/6/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

This was an excellent play that far exceeded my expectation. The story was involving, the songs lovely, and both the staging and performances were fabulous. It is a show with both heart and spectacle. I LOVED it. We used to live in New York, and I have seen probably over 100 Broadway shows. This is one of my favorites. Please know that I am not a "push over". In fact, there have been many "mega hits" that I have seen that I was quite underwhelmed with (think Jersey Boys or Chicago). However, this is a GREAT show. I hope it does well when it moves to NYC in the Fall.

    Hooked on BIG Fish!

by wantse094 on 5/5/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I haven't read the book but I have seen the movie, so I had a basic idea of what to expect - an epic tale. Throw in Norbert Leo Butz and this musical is a smash hit! I really enjoyed this musical. It was funny, charming, and heart-warming. The music was well written, absolutely catchy and easy to follow. The combination of amazing actors and brilliant setting and visual affects help bring the characters into life and you find yourself drawn into the story. I can tell this musical will be a big hit on Broadway!

    Great show!

by AnthonyinDC on 5/5/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Big Fish was great! I never read the book or saw the movie, but I thought the show was fun, the songs were great and the story - well, tear-jerking. It did start a big slow, but I know there's some time for them to make revisions before Broadway, and I imagine they will tighten up the start. I hope to see it again once it hits the Big White Way!

    Big Fish

by carlottabox on 5/5/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Big Fish got off to a slow start with a very long first act. Music was so-so, but actors and staging was very well done. Second act and finale were excellent.

Beautiful staging, story line stayed similar to movie, but music was not memorable and a bit boring even.

    Turn the volume down!

by FionaScot on 5/3/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The staging was great; the cast was excellent. It was too loud. Frequently the volume was so loud, it sounded like a jumbled mess. I couldn't understand the words of hear the melody, just a wave of noise. Please adjust the amplification so we all don't lose our hearing.

    Perfection

by bolanga on 5/3/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

From the moment I sat down and saw the river I knew the play would be great. I had recently seen the movie version so I had high expectations. I was not disappointed. The sets were creative and innovative and really set the scenes. The lead female singer was especially beautiful and her voice was clear and angelic. The parts were well cast and I was continually impressed with how they visualized the story and drew you in. The time flew by and I could have easily have seen it again and again. First rate everything! I know it will do well on Broadway because it was an unforgettable, magical experience. Bravo!

Big Fish was delightful and fun

by 4Nana on 5/2/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Not really knowing what to expect, but a fan of the book and the movie, I was delighted to be so entertained. It was a fun theater experience. I would give it 4 1/2 stars if that was possible. Norbert Leo Butz was amazing and the rest of the cast was also very good. . My only reason for not giving it 5 stars was that I didn't think that the number "There's going to be a hanging tonight" really fit and sometimes Will seemed a little tentative and needed to project more or he emoted just a bit too much. I would highly recommend this show and, it is appropriate for children.

The Most Breathtaking Musical I have ever seen

by EmilyShircel on 5/2/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

This was the most emotionally moving experience I have had at a musical production. My husband and loved the show so much that we bought these tickets to return the following week before Big Fish left town. Norbert Leo Butz was absolutely phenomenal! His portrayal of Edward Bloom will stay with me for the rest of my life. It was incredibly refreshing to see such a sincere musical.
