About

Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation.

He's created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous collaborative records. His last album was a blend of pop songs and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.

For over a decade he's performed with some of the world's greatest symphony orchestras, and currently serves as the first ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

Folds released his first book - a collection of interrelated essays, anecdotes and lessons about art, life and music - in 2019, which debuted as a New York Times Best Seller, and is currently hosting a podcast series spinoff of his book entitled "Lightning Bugs: Conversations with Ben Folds." In addition to solo rock and orchestral touring, he's also developing a new unscripted tv series with Fred Rogers Productions, continues to appear in various film/tv guest starring roles, and is working on two new albums.

An avid photographer, Folds is also a member of the prestigious Sony Artisans of Imagery, has worked as an assignment photo editor for National Geographic, and was featured in a mini-documentary by the Kennedy Center's Digital Project on his photographic work.

An outspoken champion for arts education and music therapy funding in our nation's public schools, has served for over five years as an active member of the distinguished Artist Committee of Americans For The Arts (AFTA), and serves on the Board of AFTA's Arts Action Fund. He also served as Chairman of the Arts Action Fund's ArtsVote2020 national initiative that encouraged voter engagement in the 2020 US elections, and continually advocates for improving public policies for the arts and arts education.

  • Ben Folds was Amazing!

by ZannaB on 3/22/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

I took my 16 year old son to the Ben Folds concert at The Norva as a surprise 16th birthday present. My father went with us and we had a wonderful time cheering and singing. We did not want the night to end!

  • 3rd times a charm

    by BENFOLDS5Fan on 3/22/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 4 out of 5

As great as the concert was it lacked the excitement of the first couple times I've seen him. He is a charming persona on stage and very entertaining but the show lingered a bit when his Chat Roulette dropped out a few times. I wish his encore would have been something from his earlier albums, which were kind of sparse in the set.

  • Always amazing!

by Coakee on 3/22/10The National - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

Ben never disappoints - Loved the playlist and the chat roulette was hilarious! If I could I would follow him around the country, around the world. Love, love, love my Ben Folds.

It was great! He was a great crowd pleaser, and he kept me interested and excited through the entire show! His opening act was great too! Overall an awesome night with some awesome music!

  • As usual... an awesome show!

I've seen Ben Folds in concert four times, and he never disappoints. This is the only the second time I've seen him without his bassist and a drummer. He played old favorites and new hits, mixing up the show with a Chatroulette session. Ben Folds always brings an excitement to his shows and appreciation for crowd participation.

  • Ben Folds Still Has It!

    by 4Keeper on 3/21/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Ben Folds Is and Awesome entertainer, musician, poet, an overall stellar human being! This was only my second show The first was with John Mayer in Va Beach and the people there just don't know talent if it came in a grand piano falling on their head! Thank You! Ben Folds for playing the Norva I took my wife, and my son was with his girlfriend rockin out in front of the stage. Best entertainment dollar I have ever spent!

Amazing show - great audience participation. I would say this show was in my top 5 (and I have seen a lot of shows). The chatroulette thing was hillarious! I would see Ben Folds again anytime

  • Ben Folds Rocked the Norva

by FoxyAbs on 3/21/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Ben Folds is amazing to begin with, but last night was better than ever! I love him for taking requests and actually playing the requests.

  • Ben Folds and a Piano and Chatroulette

by Jessiebell on 3/21/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

I have Ben Folds Live and thought I knew what to expect from a Ben Fold's concert, which just that would have been good. But it was so much better than even that. He is amazing with the audience and so inovative (with the chatroulette, hilarious). He takes requests as well and talks the whole time between songs. Felt so intimate even in a huge crowd. Does a lot of audience harmony as well.

  • Ben Folds and a Piano

by aSnuggleBunny on 3/21/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 4 out of 5

Superb! Ben's interaction with the audience was electric as usual. While I thought Zack Williams (Ben's opener) was good, there was NO reason whatsoever why there was a half hour break between when Zack left and Ben came on. Breaking down Zack's equipment took a little over 5 minutes and Ben should have come on immediately. Instead, we were kept waiting by the Norva. My frustration vanished when Ben came on. The "Chat Roulette" segments were absolutely GREAT - I haven't laughed so hard at a concert, EVER

  • Ben Folds

Ben is a great performer. He has a an acerbic sense of humor. This guy def thinks outside of the box. He did an interactive -internet -surfing- impromptu bit whew he logs into a web site ( from his lap top setting on the piano) that's live NOW! And as people are on their web cam they can see the audience & we can see them watching us. While Ben make up word to a song about them. We were flashed a few times & saw some male naughty bits from the web cam person on the other side. There were some laugh out loud moments. I am pretty sure none of this was staged. Ok having said all of that let's talk about the venue.... I am a short person so being able to actually see Ben Folds didn't happen for me. It would have been better if the cameras were in focus and zoomed in on the performer so that folks in the back could better share the experience.

  • Great concert

by kayakvb on 3/21/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

A great concert. My daughter took me. I was really impressed. He has quite the energy, a great crowd- and what a great venue. We were ten rows up from the front. Folds may perform every night, but he made this concert personal.

  • Ben Folds + Piano + ChatRoulette= Awesomeness

by mezzogrl on 3/21/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

I have been a casual fan of Ben Folds for some time, and after seeing him in concert at the NorVa last night I will consider myself a hardcore fan. He's hilarious, brilliant, and talented. If the NorVa keeps bringing artists of his caliber to town then I will definitely be attending more concerts there. Phenomenal!

As usual, Ben put on a great show complete with audience participation. Good mix of old favorites and even some unreleased songs from his upcoming album.

This concert was awesome! Ben played songs from all over, which was a nice mix. He got the audience involved too. Great time!
