About

Belle and Sebastian are a Glaswegian indie band, known for their wistful, intellectual lyrics and melodic style and often compared to musicians such as Nick Drake and bands such as The Smiths. Many believe that they are the definitive sound of modern indie folk in Scotland. They formed in 1996, taking their name from the French children's book, Belle et Sbastien. Their sound is considered to be unusual and distinctive, and it has inspired a loyal following, although the band has never sought widespread commercial success and has in fact often shunned excess media coverage.

Originally signed to Jeepster Records, the band released a number of albums before signing with Rough Trade Records in the UK and Matador Records in the US. Their discography includes the studio albums Tigermilk, famous for being recorded in only three days, and If You're Feeling Sinister. They were both released in 1996, with the well known Boy with the Arab Strap released in 1998, Storytelling in 2002, The Life Pursuit in 2006, and Belle and Sebastian Write About Love in 2010. The band have also appeared on various compilation albums and live albums.

The band has received a number of award nominations, including the BRIT Awards' Best Newcomer, an Ivor Novello and the Mercury Music Prize. They also hosted their own music festival, the Bowlie Weekender, and were voted the Greatest Scottish Band by The List in 2005. Their music has appeared in a range of films, and they have toured throughout the UK, Europe and America. One particularly notable show was at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,000. Band members also worked to compile a CD collection of fresh children's songs along with a range of artists, including the Flaming Lips and Franz Ferdinand in 2006.

Belle and Sebastian are always a treat to catch live. The show started off a bit slow with new tracks from their yet-to-be-released album being tried out on an eager audience. They were well taken, but the crowds seemed hungry for some of the "classics". About mid way through the show the energy seemed to kick in as Stuart Murdoch (main singer) invited Jenny Lewis (who was 1/2 of the opening act) to sing on "Lazy Line Painter Jane", fulfilling one of the many audience requests. Jenny did an amazing job and really got the crowd into gear. From then on the hits kept on coming. "The Boy with the Arab Strap" was well received as members of the audience danced along on stage. "Judy and the Dream of Horses" a fan favorite set the energy on the rise before climaxing at "Sleep the Clock Around" with an extended version that saw the Hollywood audience kicking up their heels. The band finished with an encore that seemed far too short as it the audience was just getting into stride. Nevertheless, the show was true to the Belle and Sebastian form in that it left you wanting more.

Really great show - this band is awesome! The venue was great too! The only thing that was slightly lacking was the overcast/rainyish weather.

    Fun show

by lolasalazar on 10/5/10Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

There was a lot of positive energy coming from the band. They looked like they were really having fun on stage and that translated very well to the audience. The sound was great. They played a good mix of songs from different albums. I had a really good time.

    by mag7751 on 10/5/10Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Unforgettable performance at the Hollywood Palladium! It's a pleasure to see them because their music is stylish, well thought-out, and very danceable! Opening act Jenny and Johnny were enjoyable as well. The great energy remained constant throughout the evening, so I was very happy to attend.

Belle brought it at the Palladium

    by Carrington1968 on 10/5/10Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

OK, so perhaps running into an old colleague of mine who's sister manages the place and got us to the private second floor level and bought me free beers all night MAY have influenced my STELLAR evening, but the band was grand!! They are my favorite as of late and I loved almost every minute of the show. A couple downers for me, like the weak "Me & the Major" as the encore? Really?? But having Jenny Lewis out for Lazy Jane was so cool, as was the new song "I Want the World to Stop" and "Step into my Office" and "The Boy with the Arab Strap" always get my groove on. I was so buzzed that my friends and I were dancing frantically around the floor by the end of the set, where we had uber-space to be freaky. It was so much fun and I can't wait to see them again. So much preferred seeing them here than at the Bowl or Greek. Although, again, it might have to do with the VIP treatment. ;)

    GREAT SHOW!!!

by jilliang614 on 10/4/10The Williamsburg Waterfront - Brooklyn

When I found out Belle and Sebastian was going to be performing I was so excited! I was pretty nervous about the show being cancelled with the impending doom lurking ahead that was the weather. However, we lucked out and there was not a drop of rain and the concert was fantastic!!! I really hope they come to the states again soon because I would see them again in a heartbeat. They are one of my favorite bands and they definitely didn't disappoint.

Very NY show - Only latest stuff

by loliNY on 10/4/10The Williamsburg Waterfront - Brooklyn

I love Belle & Sebastian, and that may have caused for artificially high expectations: My favorite album is "Fold your hands child, you walk like a peasant" and they only played one song from it. Also they played my least favorite songs from their newer albums. On the upside, they had some great songs from their new album, and tossed baseballs to the babies in the crowd before playing "lord anthony" - very cute. Embarrassing moment was when they brought some fans to clap and dance on the stage. Next time - please play some more oldies, and LET SARAH SING HER SONGS!! Please focus more on the music and less on the show - they would be better in a small intimate show and not a huge concert.

The venue was fantastic with gorgeous views of the NYC skyline and so easy to get to. I can't wait until they come back!

Belle and Sebastian well worth the wait!!!

by mushy1 on 10/3/10The Williamsburg Waterfront - Brooklyn

After waiting 4 years for Belle and Sebastian to tour again I was so excited to see them perform all of my favorite songs from past albums and new songs from their upcoming album,Belle And Sebastian Write About Love. They opened with the new song I Want The World to Stop which was brilliant. As a group they shine and are as good live as they are on their records. You can see how much they enjoy and appreciate their fans. They seem really happy to be on stage. They are great at engaging the audience. There is certainly a feeling of intimacy which is quite an accomplishment when your standing amongst 5,000+ fans. Most of the musicians play multiple instruments so there is a lot of musicality. Besides the usual guitars, bass, drums and keyboards you'd expect from most bands they also play flute, violins, cello, trumpet, harmonica, even recorders adding a wonderful depth to their songs. They are the most tuneful band I have ever heard and best of all they "rock", making for an exciting show.

    Beyond Imagination

by TheMajor on 10/3/10Williamsburg Waterfront - Brooklyn

This was the most amazing concert! Belle put on a wonderfully perfect show, making hilarious side comments in between songs and connecting with their audience. I feel like I love my favorite band on a more personal basis now, after having seen them. They all had good spirits. How lovely was the background of the city lights and water, with perfect weather I thought - the wind added effect, and the fog rising over the buildings behind us was very cool looking. Anyways, this is the coolest venue I've ever been to... Cheers
