Belle and Sebastian are a Glaswegian indie band, known for their wistful, intellectual lyrics and melodic style and often compared to musicians such as Nick Drake and bands such as The Smiths. Many believe that they are the definitive sound of modern indie folk in Scotland. They formed in 1996, taking their name from the French children's book, Belle et Sbastien. Their sound is considered to be unusual and distinctive, and it has inspired a loyal following, although the band has never sought widespread commercial success and has in fact often shunned excess media coverage.
Originally signed to Jeepster Records, the band released a number of albums before signing with Rough Trade Records in the UK and Matador Records in the US. Their discography includes the studio albums Tigermilk, famous for being recorded in only three days, and If You're Feeling Sinister. They were both released in 1996, with the well known Boy with the Arab Strap released in 1998, Storytelling in 2002, The Life Pursuit in 2006, and Belle and Sebastian Write About Love in 2010. The band have also appeared on various compilation albums and live albums.
The band has received a number of award nominations, including the BRIT Awards' Best Newcomer, an Ivor Novello and the Mercury Music Prize. They also hosted their own music festival, the Bowlie Weekender, and were voted the Greatest Scottish Band by The List in 2005. Their music has appeared in a range of films, and they have toured throughout the UK, Europe and America. One particularly notable show was at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,000. Band members also worked to compile a CD collection of fresh children's songs along with a range of artists, including the Flaming Lips and Franz Ferdinand in 2006.

Maybe it was just where I was standing, but there were very few people dancing to the awesome music on Thursday night. Why pay $50 to see Belle and Sebastian, show up despite the impending storm and bad wind...and not even dance?!
The music was perfect, the atmosphere was great, and the view was gorgeous! What more can i say?
It's hard to rate Belle & Sebastian because they are my favorite band of all time! The venue at Williamsburg water front was amazing!
Belle and Sebastian know my life!!!!!!!!! They played (almost) all my favorites, and sounded FANTASTIC. They were very audience interactive, too. Lot's of jokes, lot's of laughs, and a few lucky people got to go up on stage. Lovelovelovelovelovelovelove.
I'm a fan of B&S, but I know many people were a little disappointed by their live performances. So I was "ready to be heartbroken". Well, I really had no reason for that. The concert was perfect. They enjoyed singing and talked to the public and interacted and danced and had fun and sang twenty beautiful songs, including "The loneliness of a middle distance runner" that is one of my favorite B-sides.
Undeniably brilliant and certainly the best concert I can remember attending. B&S only get better with age and the few teasers we got of their new album suggests even more brilliance to follow. Hope they do not wait another four damn years to come back to the East Coast.
Wonderful people, thankfully the weather stayed good. I'm glad.they played as long ad they did, about half an hour longer than scheduled!
One of the best live bands I've ever seen! They hit every note, harmony, lyric perfectly!
