Belle and Sebastian are a Glaswegian indie band, known for their wistful, intellectual lyrics and melodic style and often compared to musicians such as Nick Drake and bands such as The Smiths. Many believe that they are the definitive sound of modern indie folk in Scotland. They formed in 1996, taking their name from the French children's book, Belle et Sbastien. Their sound is considered to be unusual and distinctive, and it has inspired a loyal following, although the band has never sought widespread commercial success and has in fact often shunned excess media coverage.
Originally signed to Jeepster Records, the band released a number of albums before signing with Rough Trade Records in the UK and Matador Records in the US. Their discography includes the studio albums Tigermilk, famous for being recorded in only three days, and If You're Feeling Sinister. They were both released in 1996, with the well known Boy with the Arab Strap released in 1998, Storytelling in 2002, The Life Pursuit in 2006, and Belle and Sebastian Write About Love in 2010. The band have also appeared on various compilation albums and live albums.
The band has received a number of award nominations, including the BRIT Awards' Best Newcomer, an Ivor Novello and the Mercury Music Prize. They also hosted their own music festival, the Bowlie Weekender, and were voted the Greatest Scottish Band by The List in 2005. Their music has appeared in a range of films, and they have toured throughout the UK, Europe and America. One particularly notable show was at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,000. Band members also worked to compile a CD collection of fresh children's songs along with a range of artists, including the Flaming Lips and Franz Ferdinand in 2006.
B&S was awesome and sounded great, didn't seem like Real Estate got the same sound check!
belle and sebastian were great! it was the first time i had seen them live. the venue was perfect aesthetically and acoustically. stuart's voice sounded pristine in radio city. pairing this band and this venue was truly brilliant. there was a great mix of their entire catalog. the video screen behind the band completely enhanced the band's performance and was never a distraction. there were even a few songs that included dancers with choreographed moves, which was a pleasant surprise. i must note that i found the ushers cordial though annoyingly unhelpful, mostly. pro tip: standing in the concourse directly across from the stage is the most convenient place to stand/ drink/ dance.
I absolutely love the band Belle and Sebastian. So I don't believe that I could ever give them less than five stars for their art, music and talent. I loved that they played their new material and their oldies, but I have to say that Stuart's live singing voice was incredible. They venue was world class and had accessible public transportation, but I was sort of bummed that they did not offer passes to meet the band. Belle and Sebastian bought fans onstage to dance with the band so that was awesome too. If they came back to DC I would definitely pay to see them again.
Best concert I've seen in a long time: the band was incredible live and had an amazing energy. They pulled a bunch of audience members up onstage which was fun and funny and kept everything exciting. Echostage was a great venue and I was really impressed with how tight they ran everything. No waits, no lines, no attitude: awesome all around.
Can you say "Dance Party!" The show was a non-stop dance with great vocals and tight music. The sound mix was exceptional. Great show presented by a great band.
Radio City Music Hall was spectacular, but the show was just plain BRILLIANT! Opened with Nobody's Empire, which is by far my favorite of the new album, and then kept going. They played 2 of my favorites - Boy With the Arab Strap and Judy and the Dream of Horses - but the highlight for me (because I've never heard them perform it live) was Lazy Line Painter Jane! Now, maybe those who are just getting to know their music wouldn't have had such a great time as me, but for a long time fan it was fantastic!
The sound quality in RCMH was amazing! And Belle & Sebastian were amazing as well. They played my three favrite songs, I couldn't have been happier. Real Estate were pretty good too!
What a fantastic show Belle & Sebastian played at Radio City in NYC. So happy it will be my 10 year old son's first concert memory. The band sounded great, the guest musicians were phenomenal, especially CJ on the trumpet...what a power house and the dancers were an added treat.
Belle & Sebastian in fine form! Their stage presence brings a friendly and gracious approach that makes you like them even more.
What a show! These guys really know what stage presence is, and with a show lasting almost 2 hours they were great value for money. I also really liked the opening bands, who had a 1 hour set each.
My wife and I had a blast! It was our second Belle and Sebastian concert! The first one was more than twelve years ago. They are in good shape and their music is great.
In the beautiful Berkeley theater with a majestic backdrop, Belle and Sebastian sounded as good live as a recording. They were fun, upbeat and experimental. Great entertainment
I hadn't seen Belle and Sebastian for well over ten years and had lost track of their albums, growing up and having different interests. However, an old friend invited me to this show and I decided to give it a shot. The band was in great form, the song selection was excellent and the banter with the audience was superb. A good mix of new material and classics, very well paced and with a ton of people on stage including string players and a bunch of fans who got to be on stage for the whole show doing coordinated dances. Overall it was a blast and my interest in the group has been rejuvenated. If you are on the fence, this would be a good time/tour to see them.
One of the best concerts I have ever attended! They put on a very memorable show with a fantastic choice of songs.
Such a special & unique experience! My partner Eric & I got to dance on stage with B&S for the entire show! We answered a tweet looking for 50 fans to dance with the band. We thought it might be for 1 number. It ended up we had 8 or 9 choreographed numbers. Our choreographer Kristina Rodrigues was amazing! She taught 50 non dancers how to dance. She made us look so good. It was such an incredible opportunity. Thanks to everyone at the Berkeley Greek Theatre for making us so comfortable. It is my favorite outdoor venue in all of the Bay Area!
Belle and Sebastian always put on an unforgettable performance. Stuart and Sarah have the voices of angels, sometimes Stuart's voice is so pure I want to cry (Stevie is more awesome rocker). B&S invite the crowd's interaction and their witty banter make them a fan's favorite. I've seen B&S 7 times and they continue to be the best concerts I've been to. Go see them you will not be disappointed. Here's to NYC in 2015! Please comeback to California soon!
I've seen Belle & Sebastian 3 times (1 in Argentina & 2 in California) so far and they never disappoint. This was probably my favorite show yet; I couldn't believe they play A Century of Fakers, I love this song so much! The venue is beautiful and so is the acoustics.
Never disappointed with a Belle and Sebastian concert. As always, the band gave an awesome performance. They sang many of their hit songs and played some new tracks as well. I love Stuart's energy and the fact that he incorporates the audience is awesome. P.S. I loved the venue. So beautiful.
Great venue. Amazing set by Belle And Sebatian. Great sound quality. This band is incredible because they make mellow music that's complex and challenging. The Theatre at The Ace was the perfect setting for this performance.
Great show and great place. Beers were expensive so it keeps you from buying more than one anyway. I'd never seen Belle & Sebastian but it was everything I hoped for. Thanks for a great time.
