About

Belle and Sebastian are a Glaswegian indie band, known for their wistful, intellectual lyrics and melodic style and often compared to musicians such as Nick Drake and bands such as The Smiths. Many believe that they are the definitive sound of modern indie folk in Scotland. They formed in 1996, taking their name from the French children's book, Belle et Sbastien. Their sound is considered to be unusual and distinctive, and it has inspired a loyal following, although the band has never sought widespread commercial success and has in fact often shunned excess media coverage.

Originally signed to Jeepster Records, the band released a number of albums before signing with Rough Trade Records in the UK and Matador Records in the US. Their discography includes the studio albums Tigermilk, famous for being recorded in only three days, and If You're Feeling Sinister. They were both released in 1996, with the well known Boy with the Arab Strap released in 1998, Storytelling in 2002, The Life Pursuit in 2006, and Belle and Sebastian Write About Love in 2010. The band have also appeared on various compilation albums and live albums.

The band has received a number of award nominations, including the BRIT Awards' Best Newcomer, an Ivor Novello and the Mercury Music Prize. They also hosted their own music festival, the Bowlie Weekender, and were voted the Greatest Scottish Band by The List in 2005. Their music has appeared in a range of films, and they have toured throughout the UK, Europe and America. One particularly notable show was at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,000. Band members also worked to compile a CD collection of fresh children's songs along with a range of artists, including the Flaming Lips and Franz Ferdinand in 2006.

    Blinding light

by Rainbow on 7/21/19Carnegie Music Hall of Oakland - Pittsburgh

The opening act may have been quite good but the sound quality was terrible. The main act (B & S) was a different story, good sound quality and great performance. Unfortunately there was a nearly constant, powerful stage light aimed directly at our balcony. What's the point of torturing part of the audience by shining a blinding light directly at them, the performers were on the stage, not on our balcony!

    Great show. Disappointing venue operation.

by Carlwalters2 on 7/21/19Carnegie Music Hall of Oakland - Pittsburgh

Belle and sebastian were great as expected, no problem with them. However the seats we were sold ended up being used for the sound guts and we had to move to worse seats where my wife could barely see the show. This was told to us like it was funny and we should be ok wirh it. The seats we were given as substitutes were 3 rows back and partially behind a pillar. This could/should have been handled better. Again, belle and sebastian wrre fantastic and nothing negative to say about them at all.

    My favorite band

by MuggleBorne on 6/28/18Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Belle & Sebastian have done more or less the same show for the last 15 years—that’s not a complaint, just a fact. So I went with expectations—but this time around they changed it up! I was a little sad. It seems like the end of an era, but they were great as usual. So much fun. Even without the Arab Strap stage dancers. They didn’t skip the stage dancing, just did it to a different song. It didn’t have quite as much joie de vivre as usual but then again neither do I.

by DJDeere on 6/15/18Tabernacle - Atlanta

Shows at The Atlanta Tabernacle are always wonderful. I was not let down. Bell & Sebastian did a wide range of songs covering songs from their first album to new music not released yet. I feel a good time was had by all!

Belle and Sebastian put on a great show!

by LapsedFM on 6/13/18Tabernacle - Atlanta

I’ve always wanted to see them play and they’ve definitely still got it! I would have liked to see more from Isobel (she sang one song, but did play multiple instruments). But Stuart’s energy made up for it in spades. He was hilarious and Stevie was an excellent vocal partner and they really played off each other well. There were a few songs I really wish they’d played, by with such a huge catalog, there will always be a few things you’ll wish they’d played. Overall, it was a really fun night and the Tabernacle staff was incredibly polite and friendly (which is sometimes rare in rock venues). Great experience!

Belle & Sebastian make you dance

by PatrickAHurley on 8/22/17The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

This was such an outstanding show. I've never seen a band request the audience to come up on stage and dance! It was fantastic. The band was tight and every song delivered with the happy light atmosphere that you would expect. When you leave, you will feel better having seen them. Though - I would like to see them play a smaller venue, maybe multiple shows; as the size of the audience made for a bit of exclusion. So, I suggest Lincoln Hall for multiple shows.

    Belle & Sebastian were amazing!!!

by RoryRue on 8/19/17The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

This show was hands down one od my favorite concerts I've ever been to. The Chicago theater was a great venue and Belle & Sebastian were just unforgetable! They played a lot of my favorite songs and surprisingly enough i found myself laughing a lot. Stuart Murdoch talked a lot and told a lot of really funny stories. It's a show I will never forget!!!

Brilliant, like sitting around a local pub back home listening to Stuart sing and chat away to his mates whilst Sarah, Stevie, Chris, Richard, Bobbie and Dave played along to his tempo.

    Summer Cut 2015

Loved the new venue, disappointed however in the quality of sound in the smaller area, was hard to appreciate the good bands who were playing but overall, another great concert held by KXT

    Belle & Fantastian!

by Swoff on 6/24/15Uptown Theater - Kansas City

Great show. Belle must love KC cause they played a little of everything. Great cuts and some different renditions. Really cool show and fun. They had crowd folk get on stage for some silly dancing to 'Boy' songs. Also they played Judy and the Dream of Horses, much to the delight of the 'raging peeps in the back row.' I appreciated the ensemble, including some local Kansas City violinists! Representing the little Tomato ! Go Royals! I enjoyed the opener, Courtney Barnett. Hope she keeps writing the punk-pop songs.

Good as long as you aren't too nostalgic.

by MoeHartman on 6/21/15Uptown Theater - Kansas City

I am mainly a fan of older Belle & Sebastian tracks. Although singer Stuart Murdoch promised a 'smorgasbord of songs,' since it was their first appearance in Kansas City, it ended up being primarily a concert in support of their most recent album. Songs were all played on live instruments by a large ensemble including eight official members as well as a few auxiliary musicians who are only appearing on this tour. Videos and static images were displayed behind the band for most songs. I did enjoy this show because they are excellent performers, especially Murdoch, who has gobs of kinetic energy and charisma, but I was disappointed at the limited selection of songs from the first three albums, which are widely considered their best and are certainly my favorites. Requests for old songs were flatly denied with a terse 'Nope' and a joke about submitting the requests in the form of an e-mail prior to the show, which somewhat killed the mood. This was a fun show, but it reminds me why I don't often go to concerts of established artists. If you have particular tastes, it's easy to be let down.

More than just a pleasant surprise

by LockeSmith on 6/17/15LC Pavilion - Columbus

I had never been a HUGE fan of Belle and Sebastian. I did like them from watching the movie 500 Days of Summer, but I was not trying to go see a show. I listened to a friend and decided to go, and I was blown away. First of all, I love the venue, and I am SO glad it was inside instead of out. It felt more intimte. But I know this band now, and outside would have been a blast. The fan base was more than cool. New age hippies. I say if you like any jam music, go see them. The music was so good. Hard to deny. I would see them again tomorrow.

B&S was awesome and sounded great, didn't seem like Real Estate got the same sound check!
