BEIRUT IN CONCERT:

Beirut combines orchestral pop with world music to create intriguingly complex songs that are also infectiously catchy. Bandleader Zach Condon helms everything from vocals to flugelhorn to bring a uniquely diverse sonic palette into each sugary-sweet pop confection. In concert he surrounds himself with top-notch musicians, who infuse the band's indie rock sounds with eclectic folk instrumentation. By incorporating so many different influences, Beirut makes their concerts feel like a globe-trotting adventure for ticket buyers, who can’t help but sing along to familiar favorites like “Elephant Gun” and “East Harlem”.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Zach Condon was born in Albuquerque, NM in 1986 and raised predominantly in neighboring Santa Fe. Though his experience in jazz band taught him how to play trumpet and helped him gain an appreciation for complex musical expression, Condon dropped out of high school at 17. The budding prodigy was exposed to the diverse musical traditions of Europe on a soul-searching trip abroad, and he immediately began incorporating a wide range of international styles into his home recordings. Adopting the moniker Beirut, he released a collection of demos as his first full-length album Gulag Orkestar in 2006. The record became a surprise hit following the viral success of the music video “Elephant Gun”, leading Condon to put together a live band for an impromptu tour. The lineup stuck, and the group’s 2011 album The Rip Tide converted an entirely new segment of fans when the single “East Harlem” was featured on Pitchfork’s Best New Tracks. After a period of intense personal issues, Condon thrilled fans in 2015 with the announcement of Beirut’s fifth album No No No. As they continue to tour the world, Beirut seems destined to absorb the musical influences of every place they visit, incorporating each new sound into their signature chamber pop masterpieces.

Beirut is pretty incredible. My only gripe was that I was on the balcony alone. I wish I had been with some friends on the floor, drinking wine. Either way though it was worth it, and better than the festival I saw them at two years ago. Two encores! Awesome.

I had high expectations going to see them for the first time and was still blown away. They sounded amazing live... especially all of the horns. Each song was heartfelt and I loved every moment of it. They had a few strands of lights that went over the front of the crowd that added a nice outdoorsy feel.

  • Beirut was amazing!

The Fox Theater is a very beautiful venue. Beirut performed beautifully. The sound, lighting, and stage set up was perfect. I was able to hear Zach's voice and the music so loud and clear. The lighting went perfect with each song. The double encore was awesome too. I very much enjoyed this concert and venue soooo much!!!!

Loved it! Venue, sound and vocals were awesome. Very humble band and they really worked it and turned it out!

  • Beirut was Magnificent! Opening act was boring

    by jbird1980 on 10/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

Beirut was fabulous. Artists at the height of their craft. So beautiful. The opening act was mediocre, and took too long, and then we had to wait FOREVER before Beirut went on. If it hadn't been for that, I would definitely give this show a five-star rating. Also–the Fox theater is really an amazing venue to see a show.

  • Beirut... Nice

by Brudberg on 10/3/11Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

So this was a first experience to do the Reservation and getting the tickets internationally. Worst was that I could not get the Ticketfast option. So I had to do it will call... To me it meant I had to be there well in advance. It worked out better than I thought, and the BART connection worked out fine. The concert was good, not the best I have seen, but the Beirut is not on the top of the list of my favorite bands. It was annoying that people started to leave before the concert was over, but it meant that I could move forward for the final pieces of the act. Much more screaming and less clapping and dancing than I am used to from a concert like this.

  • Great show

Great show. Livlier versions of his recorded material.

Really excellent evening - great performance, Beirut gave alot to their Oakland fans and really made the evening memorable. They are hugely talented and it really came though in the show... But the best part was that a band still cared about their fans and were willing to give their all for a show.

Beirut was awesome! The live horns, the amazing vocals, the variety of instruments were all just so incredible. I wish I could go to every Beirut concert.

With a simple set and obvious focus on the music, the band of 6 people (drums, bass, accordion, 2 brass instruments plus Zach Condon) delivered a fantastic concert. Can't complain with 2 encores (yep, the audience was very enthusiastic the whole night). Please bring acts like them more often to the bay area.

  • Awesome!

The future classic-alternative rock ( and whatever ) rock band!

Beirut @ Terminal 5 was definently one of the best concerts I ever seen.

  • Double Encore

    by Anonymous on 9/25/11Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Beirut played an amazing set. I haven't seen a band this enthused and energized in a while. They were so into their performance that they played a double encore! The venue was great and the sound was perfect.

  • AMAZING.

This concert was possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever been to. We showed up early and even though we had to wait several hours we ended up in the very front row and it was worth every minute. Beirut was amazing and sounded even better than they do on the album. After going to the concert I couldn't stop listening to them for days. I LOVE BEIRUT<3

  • Beirut, one of the best concerts of my life!

    by KCNYC on 9/25/11Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Beirut was just incredible. I can't imagine having more fun at a concert. Amazing set and two amazing encores! Thank you so much for a wonderful experience!

  • Beirut was a magical experience.

    by Frankie9 on 9/25/11Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This was my third time seeing Beirut (once at the Wellemont in New Jersey, and once at Lollapalooza) and I think this time at Terminal 5 may have been my favorite. I was up close to the stage, as I have been every time I have seen them however there was something about Zach Condon's energy this time that made it the most special to me. He seemed thrilled to be playing at Terminal 5 and to have such an enthusiastic crowd. He said "There is truly no place that I'd rather be playing right now." He has never said that at any of his other shows. However, the energy from the crowd is something that I've noticed each time I've seen them, that everyone around me is also an uber fan of Beirut, and I think that those vibes travelled up from in the crowd and enhanced the performance even more. The only part of the night that I did not enjoy was the opening act. She was terrible, laughable almost. It was some chick with a guitar who sounded like a folksier whinier version of Norah Jones. However, her awful performance only helped build up my anticipation for Beirut even more. It truly was magical. I could easily see Beirut play three more times.

  • perfecto!

beirut have truly reinforced my faith in the live scene, here's why: sounded perfect at T5 - arguably the worst of the city's decent-sized venues, audio-wise - when countless reliable acts have grossly disappointed me there; capacity crowd of 3,000 and yet a profoundly intimate show; they mix it up impressively live i.e. it's not just a 'sweaty' version of their studio recordings; zach condon's unique/uncanny ability to switch from delicate crooning to blasting a flugelhorn in half a beat or less. yup, do yourself a coupla sweet favors: buy 'riptide', catch one of their live shows and get your balkan-folk-pop on!
