BEIRUT IN CONCERT:

Beirut combines orchestral pop with world music to create intriguingly complex songs that are also infectiously catchy. Bandleader Zach Condon helms everything from vocals to flugelhorn to bring a uniquely diverse sonic palette into each sugary-sweet pop confection. In concert he surrounds himself with top-notch musicians, who infuse the band's indie rock sounds with eclectic folk instrumentation. By incorporating so many different influences, Beirut makes their concerts feel like a globe-trotting adventure for ticket buyers, who can’t help but sing along to familiar favorites like “Elephant Gun” and “East Harlem”.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Zach Condon was born in Albuquerque, NM in 1986 and raised predominantly in neighboring Santa Fe. Though his experience in jazz band taught him how to play trumpet and helped him gain an appreciation for complex musical expression, Condon dropped out of high school at 17. The budding prodigy was exposed to the diverse musical traditions of Europe on a soul-searching trip abroad, and he immediately began incorporating a wide range of international styles into his home recordings. Adopting the moniker Beirut, he released a collection of demos as his first full-length album Gulag Orkestar in 2006. The record became a surprise hit following the viral success of the music video “Elephant Gun”, leading Condon to put together a live band for an impromptu tour. The lineup stuck, and the group’s 2011 album The Rip Tide converted an entirely new segment of fans when the single “East Harlem” was featured on Pitchfork’s Best New Tracks. After a period of intense personal issues, Condon thrilled fans in 2015 with the announcement of Beirut’s fifth album No No No. As they continue to tour the world, Beirut seems destined to absorb the musical influences of every place they visit, incorporating each new sound into their signature chamber pop masterpieces.

Beirut was actually flawless. I can’t even think of anything that could have been improved upon. Zach’s voice is awe inspiring and he uses it perfectly. The horns mic the music mic everything flowed together smoothly from start to finish.

    Great show!!!

The concert was great. The show before Beirut was a bit too long in my opinion. Would appreciate a more detailed schedule to know the exact time the main band will play.

This is my 4th time seeing Beirut and they were fantastic as always! The Tower was a great and clean venue and it was awesome that there was a pit so you had the option of sitting or standing.

    All expectations were surpassed!

by MySaab7 on 8/9/16BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival at Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

I've been a fan of Beirut for a number of years and it just so happened that our trip to NYC coincided with this concert. I purchased tickets and thought it would be a neat experience, although I will admit that I was prepared to be slightly disappointed and underwhelmed by a live performance from Beirut. I could not have been more wrong. The venue was terrific and Beirut was absolutely amazing! We are avid concert-goers and have seen a very wide variety of performances over the years, from classical to pop to country to everything in between, from small intimate venues to the largest concert venues you can imagine. This concert was one of the best, if not the very best, concert that I have ever attended. The talent in this group is undeniable and the performance from the first note to the last was an experience I will never forget!

    Fantastic Night in Brooklyn

by Leadguitar on 8/5/16BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival at Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

What does Beirut sound like? I think, what if Rufus Wainwright wrote lyrics to every Sicilian funeral dirge, sea shanty, and Sergio Leone movie soundtrack but then tried to sing them like Morrissey. What's a Sicilian funeral dirge? Think of the opening scene of The Godfather II (google the scene in case you need a reminder). So, basically, they're like the saddest, liveliest, gypsy, mariachi band ever. All that said, I can't ever remember being so enthralled by a band without a guitar player. This was a homecoming show for Zach Condon and company and they did not disappoint. The whole evening was just a magic spell of swaying, scintillating horns and wonderful vocals mixing with accordion and keyboards and offbeat time signatures and rhythms. This band is not to be missed.

Beirut was absolutely amazing! I have been a fan of their music for ages and this was my first time seeing them in concert. They were everything I could have hoped for and more. Each member was incredibly talented and the array of instruments they played was a joy to see. Would go to another of their concerts in a heartbeat. 100% recommend.

    Beirut Blew My Socks Off!!!!!!

by JasonLou on 8/4/16State Theatre - Portland

First off, Beirut is one of my favorite bands ever. Like. Ever. I know every song. I'd never been to one of their concerts before until this one, so I didn't know what to expect from them live. They. Were. AMAZING. The tickets were reasonably priced, the venue was small enough that it felt more personal, everyone at the show was nice, and the acoustics were fantastic. Like jesus christ the BRASS, WOW. My friend came with me who hadn't listened to many songs and he was like!!!! Holy shit!!!!! It was great, Beirut is great, I bought a shirt and their vinyl and I can't wait to see them again tbh

Beirut: Awesome brass; even better live.

    by Kali46 on 8/3/16State Theatre - Portland

An excellent concert-- they played their butts off. Subtle rearrangements of favorites like Postcards from Italy gave me chills. Since earlier albums were solo created and self produced, hearing those tracks with a live ensemble brings something really special and immediate to the music. Worth it, worth it, worth it! Not to mention: State Theater in Portland, ME, is a fabulous venue.

    Beirut brought the heat!

by Disgusto on 8/3/16State Theatre - Portland

I was a little unsure of what to expect at this show. The opening act was like watching a coffee mug filled with diarrhea boil over in the microwave. Beirut killed it though. Very energetic, melodic and just plain fun. The songs are very artfully arranged so each member seems absolutely crucial and there is almost no fluff. If you are looking for an offbeat, high energy show filled with eclectic musical styles, check out Beirut.

Such a talented group of musicians!

    by BeirutFan2 on 8/3/16State Theatre - Portland

This concert was so wonderful! Aside from the humidity of the venue (which I have heard the State has plans to fix this) , I can certainly say that this was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. Beirut is composed of some of the most talented musicians. The event staff for t his concert was great as well.

    Repetitious and tiresome

by jayvee2 on 4/17/16Rams Head Live - Baltimore

Forty minutes late taking the stage because of a microphone problem. The sound tech went off and on the stage more than a dozen times trying to fix it wasting everyone's time with an issue that should have been addressed long before the start time. Maybe this tainted my attitude toward the concert, but here goes.... Beirut isn't a band with a horn section, it's horns throughout. (Think mariachi band.) I found the music repetitious sounding with short 3 - 3 1/2 minute songs. Lead singer's voice gets tiresome as well. Fortunately, only a one-hour concert. Their encore was very good. Excellent musicianship but wasted on poor songwriting.

    A Perfect Show!

by DoyRey on 4/11/16Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

This was one of the best concerts I've been to in years. The band sounded great. The show was sold-out. And the venue was great. There's not a lot of theatrics with Beirut. They stand there and play their music and play it very well. I'm always intrigued by bands with horns, accordions, and other unique instruments ... like The Decembrists, Arcade Fire, Typhoon, etc. ... and Beirut has a really unique sound. They played a broad spectrum of songs from the last 10 years, and as I mentioned, they played them very well. One thing that stands out when seeing them live is just how great their drummer is. He really drives a lot of the show. I will definitely make every effort to see this band again the next time they play Atlanta.

A wonderful band to sway to alone or with a significant other. Very consistent energy and plays all of the important songs. Wonderful use of the horns + the accordion, wow. A real treat to see them perform live.
